Organized religion was created to make the poor happy with their lot in life.
Ok, I’ve been very supportive of your positions through out this thread, as you’ve done a nice job in defending them and not just making acusations. I may not have agreed with them, but that is my choice as your positions have been yours. However, this statement floors me a bit. Could you please offer up an explanation?
Whether she realizes it or not, she’s paraphrasing Karl Marx, who said that religion was the “opiate of the masses,” meaning it had the effect of keeeping the proletariat under control. I think Octobergirl might be a commie

The decoder ring prize goes to Skuebb for the phrase but not for the commie thing.
I just saw that all the way through. What a bunch of weirdos. Following the cameraman around interrogating him about “his crimes”. Accussing him of being a child molester, a wife beater, and that he kills people.
WTF.
Talk about brainwashed… but that was surreal.
This thread has certainly gone in some direction. Before I abandon it, I just want to make two points:
You are not arguing against anyone unless they disagree with you.
I think what people say speaks for itself. At this point I am not interested in dissecting anyone’s post. I can only say that people are able to make their own judgements on which of these arguments make sense and which do not.
I can restate my own or argue point for point, but I do not think it is either necessary or worthwhile. I am being perfectly honest here - I think people are able to make their own judgement calls.

Which is why it’s successful. You can basically do anything with a religion that has the majority of their practioniers completely unaware as to what the belief behind Scientology is.
It’s also why it’ll never be as successful as much older religions, because you’re provided with essentially all you need in a spiritual text of some kind, while with Scientology the plot behind it (may as well call it a plot, it was written by a sci-fi author after all) is kept completely secret from members of the Church of Scientology until they reach a point where they’re so indoctrinated that the insanity of it doesn’t bother them, or they’ve invested so much time and money and make the church such an important part of their life that they have no choice but to continue on with the church.
It’s not stupid like any other religion, it’s hilarious though (except for blackmailing people who are trying to leave the church, that is very not hilarious), and it is very cult-like in its recruitment method and subsequent ‘levels’ of attaining knowledge that require you to invest time and money.
Buncha new-age crazies who don’t want you to know they’re crazy is the gist of it.
I think the most ridiculous part about Scientology is the in an interview just before founding his “church” Hubbard stated that “If someone wants real power they should start a religion.” I mean how much more of a trasparent ruse can you have.

Or the new nazi pope. Sorry… member of the German army.
October girl, you are obviously as stupid as the day is long. You shouldn’t be allowed to speak or type your drivel, ever.
Thank goodness you came along with a reasoned argument and a firm grasp of how to use quotes.

While his response wasn’t very nice, I feel perhaps I can help.
October girl, you should do a little research before you blindly post statements like “the pope is a nazi”.
The Pontiff was born in 1927 making him 14 years old in 1941. That year he joined the Hitler Youth (not the Nazi party), not that he had much choice. Joining became mandatory in 1936. He may have been a member but he refused to attend any meetings, agreeing with his father that Nazism conflicted with his catholic faith (also, his cousin was killed by the Nazis because he had down syndrome). In 1943, while attending seminary he was drafted into the German anti-aircraft corps but do to illness, he never saw action.
In conclusion, he was not a Nazi (and if anyone doesn’t get the difference between the German army/public and the actual Nazis, I guess this was a wasted post).
Ohh, and I’m quite curious about all the ‘secret texts’ that the Catholic Church is supposedly hoarding? Is this based on fact or some kind of Davinci Code-esque ideas?
I didn’t really mean to sound pissy, I’m really interested.
Props to October Girl. After a weekend of reading on the Ancient Celts I can report back that in fact their civilization was unique in that women did have a very high status. I think saying equality is stretching it a bit especially when the husband had the right to kill his wife and children. But the authorities I read agreed that women had a uniquely high status in that society and then when the Romans conquered them they became more patriarchal.
I have no idea how this relates back to scientology. Is scientology patriarchal/matriarchal/ or just crazyarchal?
