To be completely honest, that was my conclusion from day 1.
The changes in the psyche of the American people required to stop this freight train of heinous behaviors is just not going to happen.

I don’t know. As terrible as that was it is just a blip in grand scheme of human existence. I spent this afternoon with a whole bunch of volunteers wrapping hundreds of presents bought by volunteers for the wish lists of local needy children. Then on my way home at 7-11 some punky looking little douchebag-looking kid was helping a handicapped guy pick up the stuff that spilled from his bag just leaving the store. It ends up he was a nice kid lol. Shit like that is going on all the time. Far more often than some broken lunatic forcing his rage in our faces. Last week I saw a lady hand a big bag of McDonalds and some coffee to the homeless dude sitting just outside. We’re not doomed. If this story didn’t get anyone upset or get any attention at all then maybe.
Pure scum.

I think this is a fascinating questions. The Batman shooter’s dad is a genius who works for FICO. James Holmes himself was working on his doctorate dissertation (this is from memory, I may be wrong). Adam Lanza’s dad is no dumb cookie, the guy was taking in nearly $500k/year and his mom was a trader.

I have heard that “high functioning brains” are more susceptible to mental instability. I would hate for people to blame autism though… Surely there were other psychiatric forces at play in this kid’s mind. I have never thought of autism as something that made people dangerous.
I have seen that “high functioning brains” come at the high cost of being grossly underdeveloped emotionally.
Much like the body builder that focus on one body part only.
That creates huge weakness.
Whilst these parents with gigantic brains may be able to intellectualize emotion, I question whether their children can ever feel their love.
Rejection is an ever present constant.
Intelligence is a shallow as beauty is.
All of you who have been in a relationship with a beautiful person who has only relied and developed their looks, ask yourself how meaningful and how loved, and how real did you feel with that person.

I’ve seen studies that suggested a group of students with IQs between the range of 140-150 performed better in nearly every aspect. Athletically, emotionally, socially, and of course academically. I was in a college prep school with these geniuses too and they were very down to earth, sensible, and amicable.
I’m just not buying into that one.
The deal with a criminally violent smart person is that they are capable of doing so much more harm. If you’ve ever known anyone that’s worked in a prison or do it yourself, you quickly realize that most criminals are… well… dumb.
The most violent IQ range is actually 75-90. That is if it’s not from some sort of disability and they just got there because that happened to be where they fell on the bell curve.
140-150 IQ is not genius, just above average. On all other accounts I agree with you.
140+ on most scales is genius. 130+ is mensa material. 115 is one standard deviation above average depending on the scale.

I was wondering about this comment myself. How the hell smart does somebody have to be in order to be considered a genius, I thought.

Boy do I feel dumb. The thing is I have tested in the 142-145 range three times and I’m sure you will agree I’m no genius. I always thought it was in the 160+ range.
I always believed that these tests were subjective crap though.

Fascinating website BTW. I will have to take the test when I have time and am in a less stressed atmosphere.
They point out on the website what I meant by subjective crap. How well you do on the test depends heavily on the surroundings you have been subjected to. For example, if you take someone that hasn’t had exposure to modern society they may be very intelligent but fail miserably on the test.

Now how’s that for genius? Amirite?

Guys it’s time to arm firefighters now too!
Not for banning guns, it demonstrably shows to have little to no impact on gun violence. But holy crap, the idea of arming everyone on the planet is equally as stupid.

I think most 2nd Amendment purists like myself would be happy if everyone would just get out of the way and ALLOW those who want to be armed to arm themselves without restrictons.
Probably make for a more polite America, as well.
Strictly on the topic of arming teachers, I would say you’d just be transferring the killings from spree shooters to over zealous teachers acting in what they perceived to be “self-defense.”
Hormonal Teens are unruly. Just ask George Zimmerman.

I think most teachers who would decide to actually come to school armed would be the type to take that responsibility seriously, and aren’t going to be drawing their weapon pretty much ever, particulary as the intended target would not be the child you are striving to protect, and the last thing in the world most law abiding citizens, including gun owners, want to have to do is to kill another human being.
I think if this were such a problem we’d already be hearing about such “tragedies of skittishness” occuring in CCW and open carry states. I never hear about such things occuring, though.
^^^Won’t be drawing their weapon ever means they would only do so in the event they would REALLY need to, which is almost never.
