Samul's Training and Nutrition Log

Life update:

Haven’t visited the forum much lately. Gyms have been open for about a month now–however, I pretty much completely lost my drive to train. I’m still going to the gym 3-4 times per week, but my motivation is gone and I’m pretty much just going through the motion. My pain tolerance has dropped a lot: I can’t bring myself to dive into those high rep sets of lateral raises and all the good painful stuff. Haven’t trained legs in months too, outside of whatever stimulus they can get from some rack pulls I’ve been doing.

I’m hoping I’ll eventually go back to how I was before, but it’s not looking too bright for now. I’ve become mostly complacent with how I look, but at least I’m likely doing enough to maintain.

My diet needs some work too, as of now.

Luckily, on the upside I’m totally crushing the school side of things. This semester in uni is going great. I took 3 exams last week, and I got 30 cum laude at all of them. That’s roughly an “A+ with honors” on the letter based grading system. I currently have an average of 30.3 (30 = A+) and on Wednesday I’ll take the last exam of the year. I am currently the only student in my course (~200 people) that managed to take all 4 exams of the semester at once. For anyone curious, the 3 subjects were databases, software engineering, and operating systems. The upcoming exam is numerical calculus (which will be the sore spot of the semester but oh well).

If anyone remembers that my university also hired me as a web developer; they recently told me they’re looking to renew my contract for the next semester to I can keep working on the platform I made for them.

Overall I can’t complain.

Haven’t had much activity on here in a while, so I thought I could just write a short life update.

A few things happened over the course of this summer—the first “major event” would be that my 2+ years relationship ended. This hurt a lot at first, but I quickly realized that it’s most definitely for the better.

Meanwhile, I started thinking a little bit about my future and I realized a few things. First and foremost, I thought about what I should do after I get my undergrad this year. I realized that I haven’t ever thought about traveling (in fact, I’ve never been abroad), and maybe it’s time to start. My initial plan (the one I went into university with two years ago) was to get my 3-year degree in CS and then start working for some company, possibly also working as a freelancer at the same time.

What I realized over the course of the past two years is that, by factual and objective measures, I am an excellent student and I have potential to pursue higher education and aim higher, and I’m starting to feel like I want to do that. Something that’s been on my mind for a while would be to try and get a master’s degree abroad. As somebody who never traveled, the thought of traveling to another country for a year while studying gets me scared, excited, frantic, and a lot more adjectives.

Maybe it would be best if I had a chance to travel a little bit in a less “committed” context, as in just taking a vacation somewhere, even just to get used to airplanes and stuff. I’ve been wanting to go to the US for a loooong time, and that’s definitely on the list.

Speaking of uni, some of you know that last semester they (my university) signed me up as a web developer to make a web platform that they’d use for online exams. The great news is that they told me I’ll get another contract this next semester to work on a new, different app! This makes me so proud, honored, and excited (at the idea I’ll be making an application hundreds of students and teachers will use).

Switching topics completely, I just came back home from taking a weekend off and going to visit Milan with my friends. I’d never been there, and since I live in a pretty small city, it was an amazing experience.

I got to try out Starbucks

and a lot of yummy food

Then we went to this place called the Crazy Cat Café and, oh boy

I got to try the carrot cake and red velvet, neither of which are commonly found in Italy and both of which I’d only ever really heard about. Specifically, a cat jumped on my table and stole a piece of carrot cake, which ended up being a win because I got another free slice lol.

Lastly, since last time I checked this was still a lifting forum… Well, here are a couple physique update pictures.

I’m likely not in my best shape ever, but I’m still regularly training and trying to get my numbers back on the squat and deadlift.

I’m currently hanging around 270x5 on the squat and 385x3 on the trap bar deadlift. I’m chasing a stable 220 on the bench but I keep hurting my damn wrists so that’s still gonna take a while.

Overall, I’m very excited for the upcoming fall and winter and looking forward to keep studying and doing what I love, and hopefully have a few nice surprises along the way as far as school and maybe moving my very first steps abroad!

Haven’t posted about lifting in a while, so here’s a set of trap bar deadlifts from tonight’s workout: 407 lb x 10 reps

Just to show you guys that I am still in fact hitting the gym :stuck_out_tongue:

Haven’t been on here for months, so I thought I’d do a quick gym + life update for anyone that might be interested.

I gotta say that overall, things have been pretty darn good. I’m two exams away from finishing my CS undergrad and doing very good as far as that.

Training-wise, I currently am the heavies I’ve ever been, around 197 lb, and I still have some abs, meaning that I must’ve definitely put on some muscle. I had never been heavier than 188 lb before, and at those weights I really just looked fat.

This is my current physique:

Progress has been really good as far as strength too. Yesterday, for the first time in my life, I hit 225 on the bench—for 5 reps! I remember being stuck at 190 for years on the bench, never really feeling confident at that weight either. Now backoff sets at 200 feel just easy.

Squats are going up too, and I’m working more and more in the 290 lb range consistently.

The amazing thing is—in recent times, I’ve been working out less than I used to. The last semester, I trained very suboptimally, as I only had time to work out three times a week, all three days back to back, and with a lot of mental and physical stress from the first half of the week being in another city. Even this semester, where I have time to train four times a week, I have been forced for different reasons to take weeks off pretty frequently. I haven’t trained for more than 4 weeks in a row without having to back off for one reason or another.

I’m taking a super, super simple approach to training currently: I have a lot of stuff on my mind due to school etc., so when I get to the gym I don’t want to be training for hours on end. I just get in, take in a few sets to failure on key exercises, and leave. I plan on adding intensity techniques to some of those sets eventually, but I haven’t had a need for it yet.

Essentially, my trainig schedule looks like this:

Monday
Pullups, three sets to failure trying to improve numbers week to week
Cable row or trap bar row, 2-3 sets to failure
Lat pulldown, 1-3 sets to failure
Db/Bb curl, 3-4 sets to failure
Seated hammer curl, 2 sets to failure

Tuesday
Bench, 3 sets to failure
Db incline, 3 sets to failure
Lateral raises 4-5 sets to failure
Triceps, whatever for 3-4 sets to failure

Wednesday
Squat, 2 sets trying to improve numbers from week to week
Leg extensions and leg curls for 2-3 sets each to failure

Thursday
Biceps, triceps, and delts for whatever sets, all to failure

I don’t know how many rules of “sound training” I’m violating, but the point is this is working well for me and keeps me happy and anxiety-free. I’ll keep at my current calorie level for a bit more, maybe 3-4 weeks, then I’ll start very slowly dropping fat. I’m in no rush, really. Makes me smile thinking when I got here at 17 and had NO muscle yet was so obsessed with cutting all the time

I’ll see if I can post a bench video some time soon: I’m very proud of what I achieved there!

302 x 6

I followed it up with another set of 5, same weight

How’s it look?

Solid. And like you have another 14 reps in you, although the rack tipping as you racked it was cause for alarm. You’re doing awesome!

Haha thank you, but I don’t think so :joy:

Yeah I know… I’m sick of the equipment at my gym. Almost everything sucks. All the bars are slightly-to-severly bent too.

225 x 7 on the bench!

So proud of this, the bench has been my weakest lift for the longest time

Nice!!!

Squat
313 x 5 (another lifetime pr!!)
302 x 5

The first set ended up being kinda dangerous. My gym decided to move the squat rack outside because reasons, and now it’s not in front of a mirror anymore. I am not used to not squatting with a mirror in front, let alone with the highest weight I’ve ever been under.

I realized the real problem with doing this if it’s not something you’re comfortable with is you risk not getting the bar perfectly balanced on your shoulders. I tried to accurately place it at the center but I still ended up getting it a little offset to the right, causing a lot of instability. As soon as I got to the second rep of the first set, I realized I was going to tear something in the core so I had to do something to get the back into the proper position. So I exploited the momentum on the way up, that split second where the bar feels weightless if your rep was explosive enough, and moved an inch to the right. That was enough to fix the issue, but for a moment I thought if I used too much momentum the bar would crash my spine.

All in all, very proud of that set, considering the penalty of the unbalanced bar. The left side of my core hurt for a day or so, but oh well.

Starting my cut phase today.

Current weight: 203 lb

Current condition:

My calorie target for the first couple of week will be 2.4k with about 200 g of protein a day. I’ll adjust from there. Excited to see what I end up looking like when I cut down some fat with the newly built muscle!

After months of not doing any overhead pressing, a new bar arrived at my gym and I wanted to try it out. Not sure what it’s called, I’ve read SWAT bar somewher.

I managed to press 135 lb for 4 reps on the first try, which I thought wasn’t that bad considering I could barely do 120 last year and I haven’t done that movement in a long time.

Anything that stands out as wrong with my form? I squeezed my glutes pretty hard, but I was having troubles keeping my abs tight. I think I might also be pressing the bar too far in front of me.

Oh and, I’m one exam away from finishing my undergrad in computer science!

Down 9 pounds (weighing 196 lb at the minute), squatting 313 x 6

Amazed that my weights have pretty much not decreased even a bit after 5 weeks of cutting
