The beliefs are fluid - whatever the Tsar decides. One can simultaneously worship Stalin (who among many other things dynamited a massive church in Moscow in the 1930ies), claim to be a beacon of “Western civilization”, profess supposed piety and the “civilizing mission of the Russian Orthodox Church”. Just occasionally, the mask drops when they’re upset.
As prof. Timothy Snyder in his brilliant Yale lectures about Ukraine (available on Youtube) said, they can be all things to all people at the same time - appealing to imbecilic lefties who go weak at the knees upon seeing a red star and at the same time wooing rightwing culture warriors who want to “own the libs” by contrarianism.
There is a very strong element of projection to this.

More than 60,000 Russian troops have died in the first year of the Ukraine war, more than all Russian wars since World War II combined, a new study says.
The analysis by the Center for Strategic International Studies estimates that 60,000 to 70,000 Russian soldiers have died in Ukraine. Russia suffered roughly 200,000 to 250,000 total casualties – personnel killed, wounded or missing – during the first year of the war, the analysis says.
