Sanctions remain the best tool we have IMO. We still have more that can be levied, and we can also offer their removal as a reward for āgood behaviorā.
Ratcheting up rhetoric, or resorting to direct military intervention has tremendous risk outweighing the possible benefitā¦ at this time. Total war in Ukraine is very bad. Total war involving my country is worse, and I donāt want to risk that until it becomes clear that is the best option forward. The problem is that if your country enters the fight, we are obligated (and assumed by Russia) to join full force also.

Russia fought an actual war in 1992 to keep a part of Moldova - Transistria. The breakaway republic is run by a drug lord and Russian troops are still there.

I donāt think thatās correct. NATO is a pure defense packt, meaning only if a NATO country is being attacked the mutual agreement comes into play. If Germany attacks Russia, the deal is off. At least until Russia goes into Germany or a NATO state.

NATOās always been a defensive alliance. If NATO were an offensive alliance, the United Kingdom would have had a much easier time in the Falklands with the United States Navy and Marine Corps fighting along side of her.
Thatās not to take away from the logistical, operational and tactical success of the UKās military during that conflict at all. Itās just to illustrate the massive gap in power projection capabilities. It also illustrates the notion that NATO members picking fights often means NATO members fighting on their own.

At this point of the war it seems Russia was testing the waters.
If we look at couple of the examples that have happened over the last week, you can see clearly, Putin was playing with there emotions.

Lack of military might from their Air Force at the beginning. - some say he miss calculated, but I believe he was praying on that.

Lack of a push directly to the capital. - once he made a push from the south it was clear, he wanted the ports first to bring supplies up.

The ceasefire agreement, it was not hard to tell this was not going to hold. Might of been a small miscalculation because he was hoping nato would evacuate them but when he found out Red Cross was doing it he resumed targeting.
I dunno, theyāve lost five planes today and with them losing their best pilots. The fat guy on the right, a major decorated for ābraveryā in Syria was captured today after his Su-34 was downed.
