Ls, you and DCA sound like you have experience in this area. If need be, can I ask for your assistance and input when needed? It would be greatly appreciated.

You bet, but I think Strick might be a better resource since he does it for a living. I’m more a programmer/sysadmin guy.
I would be glad to help any way that I can. And I appreciate Tony’s vote of confidence, but suspect he might be a little bit more worldly than I.

Exactly! I mean, you do live in Cali. Not much variety here in Sooner land.

Back still holding out? Mine is tired, from my meager rack pulls, but not hurting.

So far, getting better. Steady progress instead of pushing it seems to be thought of the day, at least as far as my back is concerned. Oh, and you and ‘meager’? Define meager ![]()

Well, it was about 60% of 1RM. And I agree…I am taking your lead and easing into the stuff that really loads the back. I would much rather be able to do something, even if lighter, that get weight focused and have to take another multi-month layoff from pulls.
I’m just catching up. Good luck going back to school, that’s great! Training is looking good as well.

RL, do you lift with the garage door opened or closed? Just wondering if you inspire, or terrify, the neighbors…or if they don’t get to enjoy the show.
Open, with really obnoxious music. Most of my neighbors, at least the kids, are loud and obnoxious too. Of course, my metal is SOOOOOOO much better than the rap shit they are playing while hanging out in the street trying to look tough and glaring at everyone that goes by and almost hits them with their cars cause these idiots are too slow to move out of the way of a moving vehicle. And as much as I try not to point it out, it isn’t the caucasion kids in my neigborhood doing this crap. Sorry for the rant. It seems to get worse at it warms up. I get the occasional ‘How much do you bench?’ to which I answer ‘alot’. My daughters friends just look at me and the weights and go ‘Hi, sir, how are you?’ Kinda cool really.
You live in my neighborhood? nice lifting in here, btw.

Facepulls, pushdowns, bentover laterals…3 sets each.
Post-workout - Steak and Cookie Crisp
On a side note. I’m officially a student again…25yrs later…I start school at the end of May. Going for a degree in CISCO or Network Security (Applied Sciences) I don’t have to really decide until the end of the fall semester. Just thought I’d share.
Do you already have the CCNA etc?

Nope. I’m officially a NOOB. But, I love computers, mostly, I’m semi-intelligent, mostly, I’m willing to learn, always, and I learn fast and well. That is the one biggest thing I have is the ability to learn fast and well.

Then the sky is the limit. Any idea which direction you want to go?
Great training, schoolboy. Way to go furthering your education.

Well, I declared CISCO as my major. Had to declare one for financial purposes. I can still change it before winter. There are a couple of overlaps that I’m gonna take first. My schooling is being paid for by the state. I’m gonna have a chat with one of the advisors before registering for fall sememster. I’m wondering if it might be advantageous to get the cert first then finish the degree. The cert is 45 hrs. The degree is 63 hrs. At least then I can continue to get other certs after that while I finish. I figure I will be able to work that much sooner. I’m looking toward the CCNA…did I get that right?

Not likely when you’re throwing around as much weight as the rugby players.

You’ll probably be the bully.

Yep, CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) is correct. I got mine in 2000. It has changed slightly since then, but is a great foundation for all things Cisco and basic networking.
A hundred (10) years ago, there was just the base CCNA. Then you went to CCNP (Professional) and CCIE (if you are a glutton for punishment). Nowadays, you can take a follow up test and get a CCNA with a specialization…like voice, wireless or security.
If networking is where you want to go, it is hard to beat a CCNA. Although, some “higher” jobs will want you to get a CCNP (or other pertinent professional level Cisco cert) as well.
If you want to get a cert quickly, and not have to wait on the classes, a CCNA can be done on your own. Just need to spend some time reading and use what resources you can find on the web. I did self-study for everything but 2 of my MCSE tests (I have taken 21 cert tests). And I did those simply because the company was willing to pay for it. Even if the cert classes are part of your coursework, you can still get it early, just to help find a job. Then the coursework will be easier and serve to reinforce what you have already learned.
Sorry, this is getting long.
If you know someone, or a place, where you can get your foot in the door, even as just a tech (server, network or PC) it will start counting as IT experience. That would be a boon later.
Some places will give you the chance, some won’t.
Another option, if you just want to get into the field, would be the A+ and Network+ certs, by Comptia. A lot of folks don’t like them. BUT some places require them for computer tech positions. The A+ (at least when I took it) was 2 tests and the Network+ was 1. They were a tad pricier ($200+), but they never expire. They won’t do much to further your career as a Server or Network Administrator/Engineer, but they might help you get a job in the IT field, and hence experience for the resume, until your other certs and coursework are done.
When I started this stuff, there were no courses to take, just self-study, hands-on and training classes. So the route was slightly different than what is put forward today by many institutions of learning. I point this out just so you know it can be done on your own, if time is an issue. Of course, a degree is always nice ![]()
