LS, I don’t mind long posts when they are filled with pertinent information. I greatly appreciate it. Now I’ll be posting this stuff occasionally, as well as the normal training logs.
Ok, this just ain’t right. If all the computer nerds get as strong as you guys, who we gonna make fun of? No one to kick sand on. Maybe you guys can talk TNation into putting their logo on pocket protectors for you
Kidding but I have noticed a lot of the guys here in the O35 are involved with IT, computing, whatever it’s called. Brains and brawn, good combo.

If it makes you feel any better, I did have 13 years of football and 4 1/2 years as a cop, before I decided to go for a job with more money and less stress
Well, okay, the stress might not be less, but it doesn’t involve life and death anymore…lol.

Props my friend. I don’t know if I could be a cop. Sometimes I have my own ideas about ‘right and wrong’ and the consequences that come with both. They occasionally are different than the law. ![]()

Funny, when I was in school, I didn’t want to be one (nerd). Now I are one. That’s what my wife cheerfully calls me. I’m okay with that.
Why did you decide to go back to school? I know nothing about computers but I do know about recreating my life or portions of it. There’s something really wonderful about realising that you can start something new at any age. In fact, doing it at our age just underscores that the books of our lives have many chapters left. Okay, maybe that sounds gay but I see so many people in their fortys and over living their lives like the best is past and there are no surprises yet.
Good lifting by the way.
My kids and their friends only think my boyfriend is ‘cool beans’. I’m still just mom.

Funny you mention the stress factor. Spent last ten years in voice and data, and my law enforcement friends were much less stressed than I typically was. Of course, going on six months out of work, I could go for some stress now:)

Absolutely! As a cop, the stress was situational and sporadic. In IT, there is always a crisis, real or perceived (by someone other than me), that has to be addressed/resolved yesterday.
Because of that, I am in payoff and live lean mode. As soon as it is financially feasible I am going to find a place with less stress, or a new career.

Tell her that you are a Geek, not a nerd. Geeks get things done.
I always got a chuckle from 1st time meetings with folks. When they heard the name “Skip”, and that I worked with computers, they weren’t expecting someone just over 6’1" and approaching 300#. The look of…“Oh!” is amusing.

Well, currently I’m in construction. I do commercial flooring. Business is so down in my area right now that I’ve been laid off for 6+ months now. Michigan has a program to help dislocated workers retrain for new careers, so I decided, after having a chat with the wife, that it was time I used my brain instead of my brawn, so to speak. Since I like computers, sort of, and it was getting paid for, I decided to reinvent myself and get a degree in IT and get into a line of work where in the end, it won’t be as cyclical as construction, and you can’t get some uneducated, non-english speaking immigrant to under-bid your company. Happens all the time in my trade. I’m union and they don’t even seem to care about non-union companies underbidding our work. Sorry for the rant. That is a whole nother book.

He just lifts them with one hand while working under them. Try being introduced as Mr Love or even worse, like my son, as Dr Love, Skip.

That’s what I was picturing. The looks would be priceless. I sense a commercial here!!!
Growing up, we had neighbors with the last name of Love. Didn’t think much about it till I heard ‘Dr. Love’ by Kiss. Then it was kinda funny.

Becoming a cop was kind of like destiny for me. My Dad was one for 20 years…grandfather (Big Strick) was a tropper for 20 and sheriff for 10. Both of my uncles did it for a couple of years nd I had a great uncle who was an MP. I was bound to serve for some period of time.
I agree. When you are out in the field, and actually see first hand what is going on, the prescribed consequences don’t always seem to line up with the nature/severity of the crime.

Lol If I introduced myself as such, they would either laugh or call security
Even my wife would get a chuckle out of that, just as she swooned like a teenage girl.
Actually, I don’t crawl under desks anymore. Most of what I do, unless we are in a network depolyment phase, is done from my desk…which sucks.
When I did crawl under desks, and they needed to be moved, I would usually lift them with my back. That, too, could cause a stir, when it was one of those massive wrap around desk thingies.
I would say that it is sad what impresses folks…but it makes all of us look like herculean monsters.
That is great that the state has that program. You are wise for taking advantage of it. And since computers aren’t going anywhere, it is probably a good bet. Not that people don’t cut back on staff during hard times, but someone has to keep the systems running, even when they aren’t building houses, selling cars or turning the gulf into the Black Sea.

I’ve actually done that installing carpet-tiles under desks.
