For all you guys who appreciate amazing athletes, check out the Enlgish Super League Grand Final this Saturday October 14th. I doubt anyone outside of Europe and Australia will be able to see it on TV, but i suggest tracking it down on the net.
I can’t think of a team game that is played with the ferocity and intensity of a Grand Final. These guys go at it for 80 minutes.
I especially love the first tackle of the game. What you get is a 230lb guy, pumped up by the occasion and a 70,0000 cheering capacity crowd, running at full pace into a wall of 230lb guys and BOOOM! No one gives an inch.
Also, for the pinnacle of Rugby League you should watch the Australian State of Origin games between New South Wales and Queensland. Great stuff.
League = 5 sets of tackles to reach the opponents line. A little like NFL but when a player is tackled, the idea is to get up and “play the ball” between your legs as fast as possible so as to catch the defence off guard. The defence has to be 10 metres back from the “play the ball” before they can make a tackle. So the game is played at a high tempo.

Its 6 tackles - the ball is normally kicked on the 6th phase of possession if that makes sense to you.
In addition its tri nations time soon and we (Great Britian) are very much the under dogs. I think we need a win in the first match to stand any chance and as jonathan Edwards says we need to take a squad with some pace doen there.
I think England will need to bring a bit more than pace to the Tri-nations this year.
The Australian team is looking impressive, I don’t know if you have seen much of a kid named Greg Inglis over in England but he is an absolute super star. They have him playing on the wing, although he’s actually a fullback and plays his best football from back there.
In terms of ‘wrapping’ I think you mean wrapping up the player carrying the football when completing a tackle and the answer is generally yes, but with big hits such as the ones shown in the above videos there was no wrapping necessary to compelte the tackle (generally you need to wrap a player and take them to the ground, although a halt in ther momentum constitutes a tackle these days).
Anyone catch the Australia v New Zealand match? it was good to see some decent biff, Mat King really raised the bar, and that hit on Wille Mason was pretty entertaining, never seen him stay down so long.
Lets see if we can keep this thread going, I’m not sure how many guys are into league on T-Nation but it would be interesting to see.
great to see a league thread on t nation, what about some strength and conditioning for league, i would love to see the greats of this site be invloved in discussing their opinions. I hope willie mason talks it up again and kidwell goes crazy. The grand final was rubbish, maybe that is why kidwell is so angry, who watched the grand final (mel v bne) biased ref.

the grand final was pretty dissapointing, especially after how good the AFL grand final was the day before (go the eagles). I dunno if it was a biased ref, he made some pretty poor decisions, but the really poor was were crucial to the Storm. At the end of the day i think the Bronco’s would have won, they just had that something extra that queenslanders pull out, like we saw in this years origin series.
I felt really sorry for the Storm, it would have been great to see minor premiers be majors as well, and they worked so well as a team all round. But at the end of the day, credit where credits due, the Broncos did very well for themselves. i must admit even though i wanted to see Storm win it was good to see Webcke finish his career with a grand final win, can’t get much better then that.
The Grand Final was a joke. From the first 5 mins when Billy Slater was called to have raked the ball and Lockyer converted the goal until when Hodges knocked the ball out and they called it against Melbourne.
Berrigan’s try was an obstruction also, not to mention Matt King’s try should have been awarded. Melbourne were hard done by, it would have been a completely different game had the crucial decisions gone the right way.
As for training, I’m currently training to play Jim Beam Cup next year and at the moment I’m using CT’s Vertical Leap weight program to work in combination with my sprints while following a diet derived from JB’s Massive Eating article.
The plan is to put on a few kgs and up the strength figures, while getting my 100m time down to around low 12’s/high 11’s and my 40m time to mid 4’s.
Other than this I do specific League sessions which I incorporate some fitness work into also.
I play full back/wing and the aim is to be around 93kgs with my speed as above.

Hey JimmyG, what team are you playing for in the Jim Beam cup? And how are you finding CTs program in relation to getting faster, is it working well for you?
Thanks for the clarification. That was what I meant by “wrapping.” While I like the game I’m used to, I can see how those rules would make for a better game to watch.
I’m going to try out for Wenty just after Christmas. CT’s program is brilliant! I was lacking more in reactiveness/explosiveness as opposed to strength so it has helped quite a bit, due to the incorporation of depth jumps, jump squats etc.
I have a soccer player who I run my sprints with and before I began this program about 3 weeks ago we were very similiar in speed (with me edging out by only about a metre over 100m - there is a 20kg difference between us however) but now I blow him away everytime. He has since started the same program.
I’ve giving it 8 weeks before I change it up, but I will remeasure my vert. leap and sprint times next weekend to see the progress in a numerical way.
I’m having a crack at making queensland cup next year, where is this CT vertical leap and sprint program? I can already probably run high to mid 11’s and my 40 is about 4.8 at its best but I would like to increase with vertical leap for fullback and any extra speed helps.
