I read somewhere that Gracie made one million dollars for that fight.

True?

$1.3 million I believe. UFC had to pay him his K-1 salary. I bet Dana winced when he had to write that check, conisdering that Miletech coudln’t even afford to heat his facility not too long ago. Anyone know what Hughes made? I think he makes around $40-60k. I know Franklin makes $48,000.

Miletech is really having financial problems?

I find that surprising since they have a stable of successful fighters. But of course who knows how they have structured their organization.

It was about 2 years ago I believe, it might have been just a rumor but I remember reading about it. I just find it depressing how little UFC pays out. I don’t have detailed knowledge of their business economics, but when they can pay Royce $5,000 some dollars a second to get beat on while guys on the undercard touted as the future of the sport are only making $4,000 a fight it seems drastically unfair and wrong to me.[/quote]

Agreed. I also dont think that a million dollar fighter would be worth it. I know some people who didnt buy this fight because they figured (correctly) that Hughes would wipe the floor with Royce anywya.

I guess its plausible, but man, that woulda eaten into Zuffa’s profits BIG TIME, considering guys like Lidell and couture only got $100K or so for their rubber match

I think you are confusing their ‘show’ salary with their total compensation. Both Liddell and Couture got a piece of the PPV pie. Liddell said in an interview that he cleared nearly seven-digits in total compensation for that fight.

Hughes made $55K just for showing up at UFC 56 and another $55K for the win. He also probably gets a piece of the PPV pie. I suspect he cleared at least $250K in total compensation for the Gracie fight.

Franklin signed a long-term contract before becoming the champ. That’s his own damn fault. That said, the $48K figure doesn’t include his sponsorships, PPV percentages, or other sources of income.

The fighter salaries published by NSAC are only a fraction of the total compensation these guys receive.

Ahh, ok, that makes much more sense. Now you’re actually talking about some decent $$.

Although if you consider the fact that the whole reason I BOUGHT those two PPVs was for the lidell-couture matches, and that the whole “return of the legend” thing couldnt get me to buy the most recent UFC, Royce making almost half a mil more than chuck is a frigging joke

Honestly, the money is what it took to get Royce to take the fight…I believe it had the largest gate and PPV earnings of any UFC to date. Even though it didn’t sell out, tickets were big bucks and they got a lot of people to buy.

I don’t think they were going after the hardcore MMA fan, even though most’ve them buy the PPV regardless, but the casual fan who has heard of the legend of Royce Gracie and would gravitate to this sort of event. Zuffa has done wonders to promote the UFC and it is getting more and more mainstream. Don’t worry, they made money on this event. Lots.

This is an interesting angle of the fight…

I didn’t think it at first, but after seeing that 5 or six times, I’m gonna say he tapped. We can’t really see the tap because Hughes’ arm is in the way, but you can definitely see Gracie’s arm come out when it should be protecting his face, and it does bounce off the canvas a little. Plus Big John calls the fight off the second that that happens.

Yea, he tapped.

I thought he was tappinng too.

That’s certainly a lot better. I wonder why NSAC doesn’t release win bonus’s or PPV cuts.

Me too.

Does anyone know if Gracie’s arm is OK? They said it popped…

which arm ? the one he uses to reach for his wallet ? i think it’s ok.

I guess I’m an “old school” guy because I’ve been a fan of the Gracie style for years (having used it myself to improve my ground game).

But there’s absolutely no doubt that Gracie was outmatched by Hughes. That was one of the most one-sided “big bill” fights that I’ve seen in a long time.

Hughes deserves respect for his performance - whether you’re a fan of him or not.

But as for Hughes vs. GSP, I definitely do not think it will be easy for Hughes to beat GSP. I’m looking forward to that fight because anything can happen between those two guys.

Because the UFC isn’t required to release that information to NSAC. The NSAC just reports the information they are given.
