Royce Gracie vs. Matt Hughes

I wish that the Gracies and Ken Shamrock would just bow out. Become commentators or managers, but please DO NOT FIGHT! There is no way that these guys can fight with today’s fighters! Please, let us fans of the sport remember you guys as legends, instead of as has-beens.

Also, I don’t see how anyone can argue that Gracie even remotely put up a good fight. Please, people! The Ref stopped the Renzo Gracie/Sakuraba fight, too. Renzo didn’t complain- even though he didn’t tap, he admitted that Sakuraba was a better fighter.

The Gracies dominated early on because no one knew what they were doing! Now, everyone knows how to execute and defend submissions like a BJJ artist, how to position on the ground like a wrestler, and how to box and kickbox.

The Gracies don’t stand a chance! I would love to see the old guard beat the new guys as much as anyone, but it ain’t gonna happen- it’d be like Joe Frazier fighting today.

RETIRE! FOR GOD’S SAKE, LET ME KEEP THE LEGENDS OF MY YOUTH AND RETIRE!!!
Actually I think Joe Frazier would beat the guys in the Heavyweight division now. Wait you mean the 60 year old Frazier? hmm…

Didn’t he sing with the “Doobie Brothers” back in the 70’s and 80’s?

Some good stuff from Hoost and Bonjasky in that video.
i tell you this, there has never been a grappler to match the skills of gracie, period.

Except for the guys that have beaten him on the ground, Hughes being only the most recent. Sorry, Royce isn’t even the best BJJ guy in the world these days and it showed in that fight since he was totally helpless on the ground.
You Gracie haters are just showing your ignorance.

First, Gracie completely threw Hughes off with several very effective ballet-type gay kicks, which lured Hughes to the ground where Gracie tricked him into trying to do an armbar – which totally could have caused Hughes to strain himself.

Then Gracie cleverly lured Hughes into punching the back of his head and face non-stop in an effort to cause Hughes to either A. tire out, or B. get callouses so bad on his knuckles that he would be disheartened and quit.

Hughes is just lucky Big John Mc stopped the fight because Gracie had him right where he wanted him.

Any links to the hughes vs gracie match?

The vids been posted 3 or 4 times. Just look it up on youtube if you haven’t seen the various links.

I can’t see how anyone could seriously think Hughes didn’t dominate. He could have snapped Gracies arm, but he chose not to because Gracie refused to tap.

At no point in the fight did Gracie do anything to Hughes.

You’ll have to post a photo of yourself after they fight, because Hughes will not be losing to GSP!

OK maybe not for a day, but I’ll pose for a picture! :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t know who you’re arguing with here.

This is an interesting angle of the fight…

I read somewhere that Gracie made one million dollars for that fight.

True?

I’m not arguing, I am making a statement.

$1.3 million I believe. UFC had to pay him his K-1 salary. I bet Dana winced when he had to write that check, conisdering that Miletech coudln’t even afford to heat his facility not too long ago. Anyone know what Hughes made? I think he makes around $40-60k. I know Franklin makes $48,000.

Miletech is really having financial problems?

I find that surprising since they have a stable of successful fighters. But of course who knows how they have structured their organization.

UFC doesn’t pay well.

It was about 2 years ago I believe, it might have been just a rumor but I remember reading about it. I just find it depressing how little UFC pays out. I don’t have detailed knowledge of their business economics, but when they can pay Royce $5,000 some dollars a second to get beat on while guys on the undercard touted as the future of the sport are only making $4,000 a fight it seems drastically unfair and wrong to me.
