Mixed martial arts icon Royce Gracie (Pictures), best known as the slender gi-wearing Brazilian who twisted oversized competitors into knots during the early days of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, tested positive for traces of Nandrolone, a commonly used anabolic steroid, following his decision win over Kazushi Sakuraba (Pictures), June 2 in Los Angeles, the California State Athletic Commission revealed Thursday.
Gracie (14-3-3) has been suspended from June 2, 2007 through May 30, 2008, and is fined $2,500, the maximum penalty by the CSAC. The 40-year-old member of the legendary fighting family has until July 13 to appeal the suspension to the CSAC.
Calls to Gracie’s representatives were not immediately returned.
Yes, obviously Deca is great for fighters. The point is, this was supposed to be Royce’s great chance for redemption, and he blew it. Armando Garcia has been pretty adamant about turning wins into NC’s if the victor fails the piss test. Incredibly stupid move by Royce. You shouldn’t get caught.

Unlike the NSAC, the CSAC doesn’t overturn fights based on test results.
Metabolites of nandrolone can be detected over a year after use. It is one of the worst choices for someone who is tested. I’m sure a lot of those guys use steroids.
Hopefully this will give people a more realistic perspective and people will see truth behind some of Dana Whites hype.
Training the way a competitive mixed martial artitst does, is not something you are going to do for years and still be able to train in martial arts when you are older. The sins of your youth catch up to you in a big way when you reach forty.
The aging process is purely a result of accumulated damage. A lot of these guys are walking around with a lot of accumulated damge and are going to get a rude awakening when the hit forty or fifty.

??? The fight had nothing to do with Dana White, it was in K-1 Hero’s. I’m not following.
LOL. Yeah, I think that was the biggest non-sequitur in T-Nation history.

Best comment so far…
“he tested positive for a pretty serious steroid, nandrolone. Bodybuilders use that shit.”
That Sherdog thread is some of the dumbest shit I have ever read.
I read some other threads. There was so much stupidity there (and Brock Lesnar nut-hugging) that I was literally angered.
Thank goodness T-Nation has not fully embraced the MMA crowd. I could not imagine how to shit this forum would go if these people came over en masse.
mma was much cooler before dana white and spike tv got ahold of it.

Agreed. It’s too popular. Now everyone has an opinion on it. Shit, most of the new fans (which includes a majority of fans) were formerly WWE fans. That says about all that needs to be said about the new flock of fans.

the wwe was nothing but show and steroids made the show, not athleticism. just big muscles and fake, choreographed matches. steroids didn’t help athletes, it created fake ones in this case.
a real sport has been compromised in the name of financial success.
what is up with the tap out reality show on the vs. channel? those reps are the biggest douche bags i’ve ever seen, but they fit WWE interests perfectly.
it’s obvious that up and coming mma leagues are counting on cross over fans to make them. face paint, stupid afros and make believe persona’s… good tv, horrible sport.
it’s a shame to see the most pure and arguably oldest sport in the world (ancient roman style wrestling) go the way of promoters and money whores.
