Rope Vs. Running

Does it matter which on I do? I just started Don Allesi’s Meltdown training. I was just wondering because I don’t see how jumping rope can compare to an all out sprint.

Hey Kurt,
I can’t remember where I read it, but jumping rope burns as many calories in about 12 mins as 17-20 mins of running (I don’t know at what intensity, I’m pressuming at 50-70%).
This is esp. true if you mix up the pattern as Coach Davies suggests.
It may have something to do with forcing your body up against gravity in jumping rope more than you do in running. If you have lots of hills, running may be better.
Just some thoughts.

Once you get “good” at jumping rope, it does compare to an all out sprint. Plus, it incorporates different sets of muscles and skills that running.

I would use a combination of all types of HIIT - ropes, sprints, burpees, box drills, heavy bag work, etc.

Heh, I just think jumping rope (once you get the hang of it), looks so much more cooler than running.

I’ve seen so many guys look ahem rather limp wristed when running. Very comical. However, when someone’s got that rhythm goin’ when jumping rope it brings to mind, “Rocky”. Cool.

Oh yeah: Renegade Rope by Coach D. Kicks ass.

Rope all the way.

Sprinting takes too much out of my legs and my workouts are affected. I also get some NASTY shin splints after about 2 weeks of 'em.

Try rope rounds with KB/DB drills in between a la Mahler’s HOC. 3min rope, 20 snatches, rest 60 seconds. Repeat.

Everyone can sprint; however, not everyone can skillfully jump rope. The latter will not compare to the former whatsoever unless the trainee has impeccable skipping ability.

One possibility is to focus on the sprinting while getting more proficient at jumping rope as a lower intensity exercise, because once you get the rope down, it’s a killer, and will definitely become a high intensity exercise.

Total body workout - shoulders, all of the arms, all of the legs, and lets not forget how it can send your heart and lungs into overdrive…
