Romanian Deads & Stiff Leg Deads

i’ve looked at videos, read articles, but i’m still at a loss as far as the differences in form for these lifts.
is it barbells vs. dumbells? slight bend in knees vs. no bend at all?

anybody want to set me straight?
cheers

You aren’t alone.

From my recollection they are the same thing. Straight Leg Deadlifts are different, where your knees are locked, which I have heard bad things about.

Not entirely sure though

RDL’s and stiff-leg deadlifts are the same. stiff-leg deadlifts and straight leg deadlifts are different. RDL’s and stiff-leg the knees are slightly bent and all the movement comes from the waist. straight leg the legs are straight obviously and people have a high tendancy to round their back.

Romanian deadlift, plus very detailed and well thought-out explanation of form and the differences between the two:

and…
Very deep stiff-leg deadlifts:

There you go, friendo.

check this out…

Justin Harris explains the Stiff-Legged Deadlift.

Once you see this, you will immediatly realize that he’s doing a Romanian Deadlift.

You will then realize that there is no reason do do Stiff-Legged Deadlifts with Stiff Legs.

You will then realize there is ONLY the Romanian Deadlift, and that Stiff-Legged Deadlifts are just RDLs done with straight legs for no reason.

RDLs allow you to use heavy weights and aren’t that demanding on flexibility.

Stiff-Legged Deadlifts seem to have no advantage over RDLs but it’s easier to round your back and use unsafe form with stiff legs.

Romanian Deadlifts seem like the obvious choice to me.

Again, RDLs seem like the best choice.

That was a great post Scott.

I have no idea if this applies to lifting guys, but in the military they say not to lock out knees cause you can pass out. Now that might be only if your standing at attention, but I don’t know. I have seen guys fall straight on their face from locking knees out. Just FYI.

You mean people who are standing and otherwise inactive just pass out from locking their knees?

I had to do security when I was younger and it involved just standing in the same position all day. If I slightly bent my knees and relaxed the day seemed to go by a little more plesently than if I locked my knees.

thanks for the clarification. romanians definitely seem like the way to go. i’m going to use these and good mornings for a posterior chain workout.

I have a question about Romanian deads as well. In “Strength Training Anatomy” it says that you should use light weights. If you don’t the glutes will do all the work, instead of the hamstrings. I get that the glutes will do more work if the load is heavy, but still I’m thinking that everything, including the hamstrings will do less work if the load is light. At the moment I’m inclined to think that the author is a moron when it comes to this exercise. Any thoughts on this?
