For me personally, I never gauged. I will be putting that to the test for sure now and then give you actual feed back from my stand point!!!
Either you wear the belt very loosely, have a shitty belt or donāt know how to brace. Any one of those will drastically reduce the usefulness of a belt.
To be fair, I guess I donāt allow myself to get within 50-75 lbs of my max without a belt so maybe I shouldnāt have guestimated its benefit.

@MarkKO well, I canāt really attest to the quality of the belt. It was at a good military gym I had access to when I served and they were pretty good about getting good quality equipment. The belts were 4 inches all around and broken in thatās all I know about them. Now all I have is a 3 inch dominion strength belt that I got for deadlifting. Not sure how much good it will be on squats. In terms of tightness and bracing: I always tighten till itās snug and then go one or two notches tighter. Then I take a big belly breath of air, bear down and tighten my abs. Thatās how Iāve been doing it. Any tips?
The way Iāve been taught is to pull your abs inward, then make like youāre holding your pee. Then breathe into your belly and squeeze hard while squeezing your glutes.
