Lol, of course not and no I don’t think it’s the commuters job to enforce the law (as Rattlehead) said).

I just find it funny that people get so bent out of shape when someone is doing the speed limit in the left lane. When you break it down people are angry because someone, following the law, is inhibiting them from breaking it.
Not quite. In Kentucky you’d be breaking the law by not keeping right. :)
Hey if that’s how your state works then that’s how it works.

In an very simplistic way, you’re absolutely right.

However, when nearly the entire motoring public are turned into criminals perhaps it’s the law itself that needs to be examined, not the motoring public.

My earlier point - as well as Aggv’s I believe - was that speed limits are set not to ensure the safety of the motoring public or construction workers, but to maximize revenue for municipalities.

I recently got off the phone with a lawyer. This is going to be a heck of a ticket.

It turns out that due to aggravating conditions (32 over, and a construction zone) this is no longer a petty offense, but is now a Class B misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of 180 days in jail and $1,500 fine.

The minimum fine will be $375 plus court costs and my lawyer is going to cost $400 to represent me at both the first hearing date and at trial (trial!). So, I’m looking at $1,000 ticket easily.

I’m too pretty to go to jail.

I had a feeling 30 over was a problem with the bond that high. Press it to trial, but see if the prosecutor will plead it down to an infraction, which they do sometimes to avoid a trial. It seems like the 2 mph over 30 might give you some wiggle room with a margin of error on the over 30 part. But a misdemeanor is generally pretty bad to have on your record for insurance purposes.

Thank you for the advice, that’s exactly what my lawyer said so I appreciate you confirming it.

In IL, it’s actually anything over 25 is a misdemeanor, so I’m 7 over. Speeding in a construction zone is an automatic misdemeanor as well, so I need to get this down to a simple 25 over petty offense.

The strategy is to show up to court and see if the trooper shows up (IL troopers almost always show up), then ask for a trial. Come the date of the trial, see if it can be plead down to a petty offense.

My last ticket was 6 years ago in WI, and I’ve never had a ticket in IL so I’m hoping if I shave, get a haircut, and wear a suit I can just pay a hefty fine and get out of there without a misdemeanor conviction on my record.

Yes, that is exactly what I would do. It sounds like you are in good hands.

So is not having german breaks/suspension and a perfectly balanced car. When you do have them you can stop quicker and avoid collisions better. Do you think that the result in the video in the OP would have happened if he were driving an M3? Maybe we should mandate everyone drive german sport sedans to save lives.

Tsk tsk. Let’s keep it American. Tesla MS handles better than the foreign sedan and thus even less likely to be involved in a wreck. Of course if it is in an accident it’s the safest car available.

Everyone should be required to buy a Tesla. That is the Obama way after all.
Never miss a chance to pimp it.

Doesn’t appear to be a fast lane as there are turning lanes, just the left lane.
Isn’t the left lane considered the “fast” lane? IMO the person filming was being as big of a jerk as the tailgater. Once you’ve passed whoever you are passing, get over. It’s like she (sounded like a woman when she laughed at the end) was trying to force this guy to drive a certain way; it’s not her job. And, laughing at someone else’s misfortune makes her even more of a douche.
As much as I loved seeing that guy wipe out, I wholeheartedly agree with this.

If you can clearly see that some jerk is getting up on your ass, just move over and let him continue being a jerk. No need to compound the situation further by ALSO being a jerk and antagonizing the guy.
usmccds423 wrote:
I love how the left lane is “the fast lane” like the SPEED LIMIT doesn’t apply…
It’s more like a speed “suggestion”. Do you really get in the fast lane, or even the second lane from the left, and keep the car at or under 65mph?
MattyXL wrote:
Well fuck me…I always like to consider myself a person Who can admit when I’m wrong. Sooooo after doing some Google research…I am being a dick by staying in the left lane. I seriously plead ignorance… I will now always move over.
I think it is on a case by case basis. Move over as soon as convenient.

I have been screwed over countless times by moving over for someone going a bit faster than me, only to get stuck in the right lane. I generally try to be a considerate driver but often screw myself by doing so.

As for the nickels, marbles ect…, you are probably committing a crime by doing this. If someone is tailgating me I will turn on my washers spraying the car behind me as a warning. If it continues I will move over into the debris towards the shoulder, which always seems to work for creating space.
Dr. Pangloss wrote:

When I was in my MB, I really didn’t have any sensation of speed. Everything was quiet and smooth, then I would look down and be doing 90.
This is part of why I drive a truck, when you are doing 80 it feels like it. When I get in the wifes Charger I have to be very vigilant of my speed.
Will207 wrote:

Their job is to enforce the law and most traffic penalties are dealt with by fines. What do you think should be done to prevent motor vehicle related deaths?
For every cop ensuring traffic safety there are many more generating revenue. Unless there is some impending peril I am missing with the cops I see at 5:30 in the morning in a the speed trap by my house. The speed limit is artificially low there due to a couple of businesses with parking lots close to the road, no bus stops, light traffic, and the businesses are not open. Traffic safety my ass.

Besides, I have seen more cops cause accidents and/or near misses than preventing any. I’m not saying we shouldn’t have traffic enforcement but most cops I see drive like assholes.

I have a question for you. Aren’t cops bound by traffic laws unless specifically having a reason to not be? Is it legal for them to drive 85 in a 70 if they are not in pursuit or on the way to a crime scene? I NEVER see them doing the speed limit here.

Guilty!

On that topic, I feel people don’t understand how wasted you have to be to have a BAC over 0.08. It’s far from 2-3 drinks unless you slammed back a few shots and went right to your car.
This is highly individualized. Some people 2-3 drinks will have them looped. My old man would drink a fifth of Jim Beam and you could barely tell he had anything to drink.

As I have gotten wiser, ie old, I try to keep in mind these things are not personal. If it wasn’t me, they would probably be tailgating the next guy.

Not that this always works, but I try.

I don’t know, I think driving is one of those rare things where a vast majority of people lack judgement (even though we all believe we are awesome drivers!).

Honestly, and this is straight out of thin air, I think you could double every speed limit in the United States and people would still do 5-10 mph over the limit across the board. We are a rush rush society.

You can argue it’s a revenue generator sure, but it still requires choice on the part of the driver.

It’s not like you save that much time on an average commute by speeding anyway.

I realize that’s what the vast majority think the word limit means.

And no, I move with the flow of traffic and move over if I am going slower than others.

that sucks, and is bullshit.

the most dangerous thing about speeding (75-85mph) is being on the lookout for pigs.

It sucks, and in no way am I giving the good Dr. a hard time, but how is it bullshit?

“Oh sorry officer, you know this roads is down hill and it’s easy to go 35 mph over the limit…Oh and I didn’t see those giant orange cones either.”

I mean come on…

It’s compete utter revenue collecting bullshit because there were no construction workers working (are there ever?), the pig was in an unarked car and the “limit” was 45mph and the Dr. was only doing 77mph. He should get a ticket, but the amount of bullshit he is going to now have to deal with is fucking asinine.

Doing 100 while there are people working, sure throw the book them. 77 while nobody is out there = MONEY COLLECTION.
