Right Arm Pain!

hi dudes n dudets
Not sure if this belongs here?
but here goes anyway…
I recently started getting severe pin/needles sensation in my right arm, it comes and goes refrenquently and majorly interfering with my workouts.
Nothing worse than doing weighted chins then having to deal with sudden pain on the concentrict part of the movement.I should add this started recenty when i upped the weight i use in 20 rep squats. ( i use a cambered bar). the tingling sensation normaly starts at my shoulder blade and runs down to my fingers. i know the squats may have nothing to do with this, but its a reference point. I also work in IT industry so always on a computer at one point another during the day I was told it might be carpal tunnel syndrome, in my right wrist? is there any way to eliviate this or any of you guys had the same problem? what did you do to get it sorted?

its acutally happening now while i type this!

all responses much appreciated

You could be pinching a nerve. I managed to trap one in my chest while doing dips - the associated pain was in my bicep and shoulder (to a much lesser degree) and I also sometimes have tingling in part of my hand. I went to an ART practioner to get it worked out, almost back to normal now. Good luck.

It’s not carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). CTS only affects the first three fingers. It will not cause the symtoms you described.

You should get checked out by a chiro/PT/ortho to rule out nerve compression from a cervical spine disc or a more distal peripheral nerve entrapment. A good chiro that deals with sports med should be able to determine the problem and provide some therapy to help alleviate the problem.

Take care,

Ryan

PS Since you sit all day, check out the Cool Tips archive for the “Get on a Roll” tip. That will help you sit with better posture.

cheers bob423, dr ryan for replys

I have been to a chiro, at the gym where a friend of mine works, she put it down to computers.
We went through the exercises i do and the form that i use, then we talked and went through my work and how i sit at my desk, apparently its the way i use the mouse, she recommended placing my hands differently on the mouse or getting a new mouse altogether, also i have asked my office to provide a gel pad for my wrist

she (chiro) said the symtoms should go away in a few weeks, i just have to be aware of how much time i spend infront of the computer…

thanks again for your info and help…
much appreciated

Keep up posted on your condition. If it doesn’t improve let me know.

Take care,

As a long term computer guy I can relate to posture and related issues causing problems.

There is a bone in my wrist, at the base of the palm opposite the thumb. This will sit on a table or desk if I use a mouse normally… so I tend to pull the mouse near the edge of the desk to use it… so this bone doesn’t rest on the surface.

Also, because I don’t sit at the right height and I lean my chair back, my mouse hand can be fairly “raised” at times. Due to this I now work with the mouse in my left hand at work while using my right hand at home. I had to do this as I developed some shoulder issues that I couldn’t place. This has gone away, can’t be sure the mouse move fixed it though.

I’ve also had carpal tunnel, such that slight pressure on the arm would cause my hands to fall asleep. Since getting into lifting I haven’t really noticed this problem anymore – I also had a break from heavy volume typing a year or two ago, so that certainly helped.

Just some things to look for, though of course it could be anything and have absolutely nothing to do with chronic use or posture issues.
