Rifle Lovers

Hi fellas,

has anyone of you actually shot with a Heckler & Koch G3 or G36?

Since these were the only rifles I was able to shoot with, I’m a bit curious what the general opinion about their performance might be. Maybe even in comparison to the M16 or other military rifles.

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, Schwarz. I used to own an HK91, which is the civilian version of the G3.

Overall, a very good rifle. Extremely sturdy (as it ought to be, considering it was designed to be dropped from airplanes without a parachute), quite well fitted and accurate. My views on the superiority of its 7.62 cartridge over the M16’s 5.56 are well documented.

The only negatives I can think of are:

  • It is a bit cumbersome. This is no big deal, as most serious weapons have a bit of heft to them, but compared to, say, the Mannlicher Scout, it is a behemoth.

  • The sighting system is a little weird. I vastly prefer the Garand/M14 system. Even the otherwise execrable M16 is a little better in this regard.

  • What is up with that gritty, chunchy, heavy fucking trigger? Military rifles as a rule do not have fabulous triggers right out of the box, and once again, if you want a rifle that will function after being dropped on its ass from 6,000 feet, I guess a certain robustness is called for, but DAMN!

Despite its shortcomings, I think it is a fine weapon, an exemplar of Teutonic craftsmanship. I would prefer an M14 or a Mannlicher Scout over any other military rifle, but would definitely take the G3 as a third choice.

Nice thread.

From what I’ve heard, everyone who has used the HK 416 has a real hard-on for it. I like the looks of it a lot, more convential than the ill fated XM8 and does away with the god awful dirty gas system of the M-16 and its variants. Keeps what works, does away with what doesn’t. Bruce Lee, right? Hopefully it will come in 6.8SPC and .308.

Also, I absolutely 1911’s. Can’t wait to get my Kimber!

I am a levergun fan.

I shoot a .357 Trapper with a scout mounted red dot.

Unfortunately it’s not legal for big game in Colorado.

I’ve got too many sniper rifles, thats for one thing, lol.
I think laser rifles are gonna be(and are) much, much better.

The Guru, of course. Been reading him for decades.

Whatever Col. Jeff Cooper doesn’t know about firearms probably doesn’t need knowin’.

Lily-livered liberals beware: the Colonel is about two clicks farther right than Rush Limbaugh.

But much more eloquent. Enjoy.[/quote]

Holy shit, I didn’t make the name connection but we just had a bunch of people from our command (including our CO) go through his school as weapons trainers.

Sorry for being naive but the U.S government has no problem with people buying and owning these weapons?

If not what weapons are illegal?

Without getting into specific makes and models of weapons, the general public generally cannot own machine guns, sound suppressors (a.k.a. silencers), short barreled shotguns, short barreled rifles, or “destructive devices” A destructive device (DD) can be two basic categories of things. It can be an explosive, incendiary or poison gas weapon, like a bomb or grenade. It can also be a firearm with a bore over 1/2", with exceptions for sporting shotguns.

An individual otherwise able to own any gun under federal law (and local law permitting), can receive and own these types of weapons by filling out an “Application for Tax Paid Transfer and Registration of Firearm”.

So the short answer to your question is that the federal government does have a problem with individuals owning certain types of weapons, but the problem is not insurmountable. The REAL problem is with state and local governments.

Short barreled rifles, Short barreled shotguns,“silencers” aka Suppressors, and full-auto weapons are not Illegal.

They are “restricted”, if you are willing to pay the tax/fees and deal with all the red tape you can own one.

Gun forums are full of people with short barrled shotguns, full auto AK’s.

As long as you pay your dues to the good old BATF (the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, affectionately known as “kitten stompers”: fifty points for anyone who knows why), you can buy practically any weapon you want.

I think tactical nuclear weapons are still illegal, however.

I’ve got the American made DSA SA58 Tactical Carbine. It shoots a .308 (7.62 x 51 NATO)cartridge. Surplus ammo is only a little more expensive than the .223 that the AR-15 shoots, but it’s a whole lot more powerful.

Is that like the UK infantry weapon?

Forgive me for being naive, but this whole exercise seems like masturbation to me. A poor imitation of the real thing.

I would just be tempted to shoot the fucking neighbor or something, to see what happens.

It’s very much like the old UK infantry L1A1, except the UK version was inch based and the DSA is metric. I bought a surplus SUIT scope to mount on my rifle. It slid right into my upper receiver. Here’s a link to the history of the FN-FAL. The British L1A1 is shown with the SUIT optical sight.

It’s geniuses like you that give masturbation a bad name.

I wish I lived in the states. Gun laws suck dick up here in Canada, ehh. All I got is a 12 guage, a lee enfield mark 4, 2 shitty .22s and winchester 30.30 lever action. My dad is a cop and he has a glock and a glock 22 .40cal, anda glock 27 for back-up. Fuck those are nice to shoot.

It seems like there are a lot of naive people asking for forgiveness today. ;p

That is a nice selection of long guns. If you can’t get it done with those you aren’t trying.

Semiautos only make you waste your ammo faster. They are fun though.

Hey at least you have the means to feed and defend yourself…a 12g, 30-30 & a .3os brit.

That’s a pretty well rounded collection.

More states need Chief Justices like Robert Lynn:
