Hey this probably a dumb question but in your opinion what would be an ideal total for a junior at a powerlifting meet? say at 195-205lbs
don’t fall into the trap of comparing yourself to some ideal. powerlifting is and should be an individual thing. if it’s your first meet your goal should be to go and set some baseline numbers in each lift and a total. then, after that, your goal should be to try and beat those numbers in your next meet.
when i go to a meet i don’t watch anyone lift, i don’t care what the records are. i don’t care if i’m the only lifter in my division or have 30 people in my division. I could compete in the submasters division if i wanted to but i go in, weigh whatever i weigh and whatever weight class i fall into and compete in the open class.
point is, if you wait around to meet some ideal set by someone else, you’ll never compete. you’ll end up like most of the people on this site- sitting around debating what’s hardcore or not in bodybuilding, powerlifting, ect over the internet but in actuality are nothing more than someone that lifts weights.
get out there and compete… but do it for yourself.

Just do a damn meet, seriously. And fwiw, at your weight you’ll be in the 198’s or the 220’s…I’d suggest you lift in the 198’s, as long as it doesn’t require more than 3-4 lbs weight loss on your part.
OK that’s really good advice, thanks man. ILl do one next summer I think if there is one near me.
Just look one up that’s int he next month or so man. Don’t put it off like this.
Ok Im doing one in March. I live in ontario so i guess i have to go through a process of getting my membership which supposedly takes 4-6 weeks but i am doing it and started training for it today! Im gonna try for a 420lb squat for the first time this week i got 405 last week and it went up pretty easy if i figure out how ill post a video.

good for you hoss!!! what fed are you going to be competing in??
post some vids of your lifts. there’s a huge difference between gym lifts and competition lifts. most people don’t squat deep enough and most people don’t pause their benches. there’s quite a few things that can get you red lighted on a lift even though you still completed the lift.
i would strongly suggest reading through the rules of your fed and start lifting based off of those rules.
just get out there and do it. you can then call yourself a powerlifter.

Yeah I think the ontario powerlifting association but not 100%, my coach is going to talk to his friends that compete around london area which is only 45-60 mins from my front door. My lifts took a hit because i just lost a considerable amount of weight but my squats better then ever and my bench is getting closer to normal each week so it wont be long. and when i figure out how to post a video ill get something up, i dont know how to get it from a cell phone or whatever to my pc:S
5/3/1 week 1, cycle 1- last day of week one. i took it easy this entire week. just got my work in and didn’t push it. next week i’ll up the intensity on that last set on each day. today, i was very happy with how light the weights felt for the first cycle.

(85%)-460x5- probably had 10 in me. hold’n back…for now.
leg press- i decided to use this exercise to really stretch out the groin. I placed my feet as i would to do sumo with the toes pointing out to the sides. as i lowered the sled i pushed my knees out to the sides. this was an awesome stretch for the entire groin, adductors, etc… i’ll keep doing these after squats.
week 2, cycle 1 - time to start push’n things a bit. felt great tonight.
military press-

How’s the rep work feeling? Any chance of some vids again? I like watching your stuff before I go to the gym lol
it’s taking some getting used to. i’ve gotten so used to working up to a single or double and then backing off to really light weight. i like it though.
as for the vids, i was waiting to get back into some heavy weight before i wasted anyone’s time:) i might vid some of my standing strict militaries this weekend.

I know, seriously meat, where the hell am I supposed to get motivated from when you stop posting vids?
i don’t think you are having any problems getting motivated my friend. i was going to bring my video camera today but i forgot. had a good session too. i’ll get whore’n on the vids again soon.
(75%)-200x5
(85%)-230x3
(95%)-260x5 +4 reps. i’ve made good progress on the militaries this cycle. my last set of week 1 was 230 and i got 6 which was + 1 reps. the second week i hit 245 x 6 which was + 3 reps and then today was 260 x 5 for +4 reps. i was shooting to keep my last working set to 6 reps just like the last two weeks but i would have had to dip a bit to get it. still happy with the progress.

douchebaggery from the gym-
this guy came in to do some benching in his super tight under armour t-shirt. he immidiately went to 225 without a warmup… very hardcore. what was even more hardcore was the super flare of his elbows as the bar came down about halfway on each rep. he did about 10 of those. then he immidiately threw 315 on the bar gave everyone within his vacinity the hairy eyeball. he layed back and again flared those elbows and brought the bar down about a 1/4 rep this time. this time though, we had the honor of hearing “ohhhh yeah!!!” after each partial pathetic replet. i figure his ROM couldn’t get an smaller but ohhhh no!!! he threw a 25 on each side. me and my guys just sat there watching this show. he scanned the gym looking for just the right person to spot him on this next money set. of course we were sitting right there but he didnt’ ask one of us. he probably realized that we had already trained our rows for the week and didn’t need to do anymore. for his last massive set he got this guy to lift off and row the weight approximately 1 inch. it was hard to actually see the bar move but the spotters arms were flexing and his face was distorted in pain so i’m guessing the bar was moving some.
the sad thing is one day that bar is actually going to come all the way down and something is going to give.
deads- awesome night weights were very light tonight so i decided to do some pulls against bands after the working sets. we wrapped the bands five times at both ends to really tork them down.
warmup
135x5
225x5
315x5
working sets
(75%)-405x5
(85%)-460x3

deads against bands
225x10

for the next cycle i’m going to up my weight by 10-20lbs but i’m also going to do all my working sets against bands. should be fun.
