My dad is still adamant he had a physique just like mine when he was my age. All built doing nothing but sit ups and push ups.
Doesn’t qualify as a “tall-tale”, but this morning I walk into our coffee room as a guy down the hall from me is explaining to someone else that the “hardest, best excersize in the world is road cycling”. I couldn’t help stopping for a moment to make sure I heard this correctly. He went on to explain how NOTHING, including weight training, could get you in shape like cycling.
I think I muttered something about gender reassignment while getting my coffee and leaving before my head exploded…
A woman I worked with once told me she had 4% body fat. Believe me…she didn’t.
A few girls at my current gym can Deadlift around 100Kg. Sadly, this is more than most of the skinny fat man bitches that spend most of their time hyping each others BS and posing in the mirrors. If it wasn’t so damn comical I doubt I could tolerate it…
Well I think the biggest source of ridiculous gym numbers is right here on T-Nation!
We’d need a math and/or stats expert to figure it out, but I estimate the average user here adds anywhere from 33-40% to their PRs. I always chuckle to myself when some gawky, chicken-legged user talks about squatting 315x8 like it’s nothing.
In the gym and in day to day life, the biggest load of BS I get from people is that they know a guy “about your height…maybe a bit taller…but like 40 lbs bigger and RIPPED”. People meet me and feel compelled to tell me these stories, don’t really know why.

lol, I can’t tell you how many people have felt the need to tell me how low their bodyfat %s were at some earlier point in their lives. I guess no one (especially 99% of gym rats) has any concept what single digit bodyfat really looks like, so it’s easy not to get called out on such claims.

Worth it.

Had a guy a few years ago at the gym tell me that when he wad playing high school football he benched 405 weighing 190 with 2% body fat. In his defense, he was pretty strong and pretty lean, but that’s pretty silly.
Seems every other day I run into an ex MMA champion.

I would guess that in a lot of those people’s minds, the DO squat 315x8. There is a kid at my gym who only does a full reps for curls. everything else is 1/4 reps. Bench, DB bench, squats, leg press. And as you can guess, he loads all of them up.
His squat warm up is full ROM, but every time he adds weight, it gets shallower. I would guess he couldn’t hit 225 for a parallel squat but his top set is 315 for 6-8. Knee bends at best with some grunts for the last few. I can tell just by looking at him he KNOWS he squats 315 for reps because he gets under 315 and moves it.
Some of these people aren’t liars, they are just delusional.

I completely agree! I do think so many users on here must add a lot to their numbers.
And yeah I have heard that so many times: “I have this friend who’s a similar height, maybe a little taller than you…BUT” then comes something that can only be described as mythology. It’s always awkward to know how to respond.

When I first started reading the threads here I thought there had to be something wrong with me, then I realized most here probably don’t even lift. There was a PWI thread about how much the regular posters lift almost made me piss my pant…what a joke.
I just tell people my lifts and I usually have a good day.

I see this all the time, especially at the squat rack.

Yeah, I’ve never understood why people have to come and ‘‘one-up’’ you, or at least try to with their own lifting or that of one guy they know/knew.
A guy in my former school once told me ‘‘his boy’’ usually does plyometric bench WITH A CLAP, using 140kg. I.e throw the bar in the air, clap, catch the bar. Repeat.

This reminds me of a guy in my gym who I had heard could do all kinds of ridiculous lifting. Most people thought and still think his lifting is legit yet I have never seen him do a single rep on his own. 225lb curls, squatting (slight ass dip) 7 plates per side in the smiths, 350lb incline benches, etc. The instructor who usually helps him (enabler) gets more of a workout than him.
There are a few shit-talkers at my work about how much they lift. They usually tell me about it. Rather than calling them out, I make it a point to not sound excited at all. If someone who looks like he could bench 200 tells me he got 405, I would say something like “yeah, that’s not bad” and move on to some other subject about lifting. I find the lack of enthusiasm takes the wind out of their sails and they stop bragging.
