Return of the King

Wow!

Absolutely incredible, definitely my favorite of the trilogy.

King Kamali?

Yeah, it was excellent.
The only complaint was that they left out half the book.

Yes definitely a great movie, especially the fight scenes.

Great fun on the big screen, but much better without morons periodically shouting during the film

Jackson did an outstanding job.

can’t wait

Went to the midnight showing.

It was breathtaking, engaging, emotionally draining, epic, and contained staggering, jaw dropping battle sequences; in between it was personable, intimate and had moments of subtlety that provided a solid base for the more dramatic and powerful scenes.

It’s also filled with so many details; so many that a second and third viewing is inevitable (for me, anyways). This movie will spoil it for many. “Spoil” I mean, you’re going to expect more from the movies after seeing this. Definitely in the area of FX/CGI. However that, leave no doubt that this trilogy was all about the story, and this movie shot it all home. Perfectly. Perfect blend of drama, action, CGI - everything. It almost seems so wrong to call this movie a “fantasy”. Especially when the characters crackle with real life and the settings have become as real as my own home.

I found myself misty eyed at several scenes. But mostly, I wanted to just remain enthralled and then digest all that I had just seen afterwards. Which I’ve been able to do; somewhat. I’ll see this again…and again in a week or two. With fresh eyes.

Until then, I’ll remain in denial. I’ll watch our FoTR and TTT EE’s over and over again. I just don’t want it all to end so soon.

A marvelous achievement, and yes, it does “raise the bar” for others.

Still VERY saddened, not at the omissions (since not everything could fit in), but at the alterations that didn’t, IMO, enhance the story. The changing of characters’ personalities wasn’t necessary.

But an amazing film, considered on its own merits.

changing of their personalities? How?

I’m psyched that Peter Jackson may eventually do The Hobbit.

New Line finally bought the rights, and Jackson sounds interested in doing it, he said something to the effect of he couldn’t imagine anyone else directing it. Unfortunately, no one from New Line has asked him to do it yet.

I can’t imagine they wouldn’t though, PJ + Hobbits = $$$

i remember seeing hte hobbit animation as a young kid but i take it the hobbit is gollum in lotr?

The Hobbit is Bilbo Baggins, Frodo’s uncle.

no, the hobbit is bilbo baggins

No-no-no. “The Hobbit” the book, is a prelude to the LOTR, a story about Bilbo Baggins finding The One Ring.

Gollum was a hobbit as well, but the ring twisted him into what you saw in LOTR.

TenByson,

Here are some examples:
(Everyone else, beware! There may be spoilers here if you haven’t seen the film.)

–Faramir in TT is turned into a less-noble character; evidence is when he intends to take Frodo to Minas Tirith; Tolkien made Faramir a truly noble person who reminds Frodo of Aragorn, and even of Gandalf!
–Theoden in TT is afraid and cowardly, and needs Aragorn to convince him to make a charge at Helm’s Deep; in Tolkien, Theoden, once snapped out of Wormtongue’s “spell,” is all about being a brave warrior.
–Denethor is made into a glutton; Denethor is supposed to be disciplined and powerful, escept that he has given in to despair because of what he has seen in the Palantir. The scene with close-ups of Denethor eating while the battle at Osgiliath goes badly creates a nice effect, but portrays him as a very different character than Tolkien does.
–Gandalf having doubts, and Aragorn being the one to create hope and create a diversion for Frodo? Okay, Jackson is trying to show that Aragorn’s “time has come,” but Gandalf is the architect of most of the good tidings, and didn’t need to be lessened and made to seem naive about the way things were going.
–Elrond being so opposed to Aragorn marrying his daughter (and then smiling and clapping when Aragorn and Arwen are sucking face at the coronation?). Ugh.
–Gandalf taking out Denethor with his staff? Kicking him into the pyre?

There are more, and I don’t see how they enhanced the storyline.

I enjoyed much of the films, and some of the images created were perfect. I thought the acting was about as good as it gets. I don’t want to lessen anyone else’s enjoyment. But PLEASE READ THE BOOK and find out what REALLY “happened.” It’s an amazing literary work, and movies don’t generally do justice to their source books. Read the books (if for no other reason than you want to find out what happened to Saruman!).

I really enjoyed it. I thought the Hobbits were a bit gay in this one though, not that there’s anything wrong with that…

Seinfield strikes again! (not that there is anything wrong with dat!)

Going to see ROTK tonight…

I’m a huge fan of the films, own both of the EE’s and all that…but I have to go with Shaw on this one. A few things in the movie had me going “Huh? Why?” But, in no way do I wish to take away from anything Jackson has done. I truly don’t believe anyone could have made these movies better than they are. They are as good as a movie version of this book could have been. But for people who really want the ENTIRE LoTR experience, you absolutely MUST MUST MUST read the book. So many things are explained that you never see in the movies (especially RoTK), and the fate of many characters is quite interesting to read about (especially Saruman, as Shaw said; it’s pretty funny).

P.S. LoTR was never intended to be three books. It was written as one book with six parts, but Tolkien’s first publisher felt that no one would ever buy a 1000 page book and read it, much less a book about fantasy (Guess we should think that publisher now, huh? Doubt anyone would have ever made this movie if it remained as one book). Anyway, I say this because if you ARE going to read the book, buy the full version with all three-in-one. This version also includes several appendices with maps, language translations, history, etc. that Tolkien invented. This man was a true literary genius. There’s also some words from Tolkien himself about his original intentions for LoTR. Truly awesome read. Add it to your list if you like to read; trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

Ok…just saw the Return of the King. Patricia was right…in all her comments…and it will definately spoil you when you see other movies.

To all that have seen it and posted…can we all agree that they did an incredible job with these movies! and…that TOLKIEN was a GENIUS!!!

Saw it…loved it…
