Return of the King

beautiful, though I must admit I haven’t read the books. I also felt that they ended the movie well, there was no sudden end, they told how life went ahead with the characters.

arnoud…did you see all three? I take it you might have.

Just spent the day with my godson while his parents saw the film. They tell me that the…“final fate” (I don’t want to spoil things) was actually filmed, and that there is about an hour of extra material for what will be the extended edition of RotK!

I cannot urge anyone strongly enough to read the books if you haven’t. You won’t be disappointed, and you’ll learn so much more about the characters. It’d make a nice Xmas or Hanukkah gift for yourself.

THAT was cryptic!

By “final fate” I meant the closure to the story of Saruman (and Wormtongue).

TShaw, I am 99% certain that Jackson dis not film that as he has been quoted many times saying that that was his least favourite part of the books and he wasn’t even going to film it for the dvd.

Yes, it was great. Go see it!

That was by far one of the best movies I have ever seen!!! Woulda been better if I didn’t have to piss like a racehorse after about 20 minutes in and the only doory being on the other side of the theatre. That was a long 3 hours…

They are only going to show the movie on Boxing Day here in Australia. How long was the movie? I hear that it’s something like 3.5-4 hours long. Is that right?

I’ll throw my 2 cents in as well…

Reading the book(s) enhances the pleasure of watching the movies, or vica-versa if you haven’t read them yet. I still think anyone who doesn’t read the original J.R.R. Tolkien LOTR books is missing out something fierce. There’s just too damn much story to tell in a modern film…as evidenced by the 3:20 minute film that left about half the last book out!

I was actually thankful that the Director cut out major parts of the film, as I was getting fatigued…I went to see the movie on opening night at 12:20am, and had work a few hours after it ended…Ugghh! I did, however, work out the next day. So there, Frodo!

In any case, enjoy the film if you haven;t seen it yet, but please make time to read the book. It’s difficult to read, but worth it.

I agree with most of the comments about the movie. Been a LOTR fan for 30 years. The Hobbit would be a great movie. If they could make The Silmarillion, that would be incredible. If you’ve never read it, I reccomend it, although it’s a little like the Middle Earth “Old Testament” athe beginning. It’s basically about the creation of Middle Earth, eleves, dwarves and men. Expalins where Sauron and evil came from, orcs, spiders, the balrogs (the creature/demon in Moria that whacked Gandolph) the meaning of the white tree, how the 9 Kings were corrupted, the origin of the rings, the mixning of the gene pool between elves and men.

As I recall Tolkien died before he finished it and his son completed it. The original dark lord is a charcter named Melkor and is a real bad ass.

OK, Ren. NOW you’ve ruined Christmas! Oh well, I’m sure there WILL be lots of great stuff on the extended edition.

Best. 3-part. Movie. Ever.

For one rare occasion, I agree with Patricia on all counts. She wrote it far more exquisitely than me, so re-read her.

The guy/girl who is going to top that masterpiece better start eating his crumbs now.

And to all those who like to discredit this film, I ask you this: Find me a better equivalent?

(Western movie style windgust sound and corresponding rolling weed-ball…Thought so. ;0) )

“a better equivalent”?

Let me be the first to proclaim: this is hands-down the best cinematic treatment of LotR that I have ever seen; in fact, the best that exists.

T-SHAW: Hence the challenge to the naysayers…there`s nothing in existence, past or present, that can top it.

The top watermark/bar is now very very very high. And that is excellent.

:0)

As someone who hasn’t read the books, I thought it was too long. There were about 10 places where the movie could have ended after the Ring was gone. Frodo wakes up, everyone’s happy: credits roll. The guy is crowned king, everyone’s happy: credits roll. Liv Tyler show’s up, everyone’s happy: credits roll. The fat one gets hitched, everyone’s happy: credits roll. I know there is a book to be true to, but end it already. Some of us have to take a leak.

Also, the second one was great with the whole movie building to the big ass battle. So much tension. This one had none of that. There was a big battle in the middle, it had some buildup, but it ends so lamely with the ghosts cleaning house. Then you are just left with waiting for Frodo to chunk the ring in the lava. When he finally did, my only thought was, “Great. Now maybe I can piss.” Good movie, too long, the second one was better.

I went to see it with my son for the second time yesterday, we got there a few minutes late the first time and missed the opening scene with Smeagol. If anything, the second time is even better.

I’ve read the trilogy probably a dozen times, and RoTK was always the best book. The temptation was always there to just read it and skip the other two, but I resisted and read the other two first. It only makes sense that the RoTK movie would be the best of the three, too.

I thought the ending dragged on too long, and I missed the Scouring of the Shire (although I really don’t think it would have added that much). I didn’t find anything at all gay about the relationship between the hobbits, but I think the books did a much better job of explaining the nature of hobbits and their relationships with each other. Keep in mind, they ain’t human.

The only time I got a little misty-eyed was when Pippin was singing while the men of Gondor rode to certain death in Osgiliath.

My question is when will he do DragonLance?

With him directing and enough money/special effects behind him he could do the DragonLance justice.

Any of you who are fans of this should check out Terry Brooks Shannara series, I think he’s writing his 4th trilogy based on it right now. The stories have a lot in common with LOTR, but it’s like a more evolved version of it, I think, and I’m pretty sure we’re with the 4th generation of the central family by now, so it’s a good read, I wish they’d make movies on it too. Any way, you should check them out.

Dragon Lance?

Isn`t there about 20 books out in this series? Where do you start? Where do you stop?

Tall order.

Dragonlance would be a tall order.

Do two three hour movies for Legends, Meetings, then Heros.
