Reset, Reboot, and Reload

6’3 at an unfortunate 312lb. That’s getting up to around 30%+ body fat. At least with my height it’s not as obvious to some.

imagine being 275 and ripped! keep going hard bud

20131201 - Cycle 3 Wk1D1 - OHP

Warm-up - scooping the several hundreds of pounds of compacted snow from the plow trucks (two phases, one heavy earlier in the afternoon and a smaller section immediately before the workout)

OHP
50x5, 60x5, 75x5
85x5, 95x5, 110x8 (Same number on the final set as last cycle and one more rep than the last time I pushed that weight)
2x10@50

That shoveling did me in a lot more than I expected. Nevertheless my shoulders were tired before starting. Totally wiped after two sets of 10 so I called it a day. Part of this crap performance is probably due to the fact that I did not deload last week but took it off, nor did I do any of the conditioning, mobility work I intended to do. I don’t have a really good excuse for last week or today except maybe a lack of sleep and not enough naps!

As I stated previously, we seem to get a major snow storm as soon as the streets have been bladed. Since Friday we’ve had a severe snow warning and sure enough it’s supposed to hit right about now - after my street was plowed. My theory keeps getting more credence as this winter progresses.

Normally I’d do deadlift on Monday but with all this snow coming I know I’m going to be overdoing my back so I’ll be swapping with squats and keeping myself to the prescribed numbers on 531 and will not push the final set. I meant to do that tonight but I went and wrote that plus sign on my journal page so it had to be done.

I think I had a bit of exercise asthma with the big packed, plowed pile I moved. Really huffing while working and then a cough that rattles the bones once I was inside and warm. This only happens during the winter. Warm to hot water to drink during the workout seemed to help a bunch, as much as I hate hot beverages. Suck it up princess.

While I’m being a whiny baby, last night I pulled out the fretless electric bass and doodled for a few hours. That left my shoulders a little sore from the position I was holding. OK, done. No more whining tonight.

That’s ok, we can take a bit of whining. Watch that cough & your breathing, maybe some vapour tea tree oil/eucalyptus inhalation stuff?

Did you funk it up on the bass? Last time I saw a fretless bass being played was Les Claypool many many many moons ago. I do prefer the sound to them, but still not quite a double bass (or do you Canadians call it an upright bass like in the US?)

just keep working hard and dont give up and you will be great! sounds like youre getting a massive amount of exercise with the snow shovel, and that counts for something, may not be the best muscle building idea, but it certainly puts a serious strain on the system and will continue burning calories for a while after and all that… How,s the weight? holding steady or dropping at all since you started the program?

minimal: There are a lot of factors with electric fretless that, depending on the player, sounds more like an upright or like Jaco. I’m torn between the two sounds myself. In a classical context we call it a double bass and an upright in jazz.

confusion: The weight is slowly climbing but I know the diet is crap and I’m not too inclined to clean it up right now. Besides, I hate eggs. It seems every diet revolves around eggs for breakfast. Blech! One day I’ll clean it up.

I think diet is over rated, but i have some other unconventional ideas also. I was referring to your body weight, which,I guess, is what you,re saying is slowly climbing?

Yeah, I’m around 315 at the moment which is up from a few weeks ago. Pants are tighter but they have been for awhile and that was a few pounds ago. My diet has been mostly processed garbage for some time. My wife’s food is good and clean but that only accounts for one meal in the day. My predilection towards sugar and chocolate is my main problem. I know it. I have to decide that it’s not worth it (which it isn’t but people aren’t usually rational when it comes to addiction).

I LOVE eggs, my co-workers think I am cRaZy though, as I eat them everyday, they are very versatile. But I can understand why someone wouldn’t like them. Sugar is hard though, I managed for 8 months, even reading labels for everything to make sure there wasn’t any sugar. The amount of needless foods have sugar in them. I don’t need sugar in my mayo thank you, or in my mustard.

My wife loves eggs too but I just can’t get past the flavour. Yes, I know it’s adaptable to most anything that you throw at it but there’s an underlying taste I still notice and I just can’t get over it. Don’t like the mouth feel, either. Yes, I 'm a picky eater. The hind brain stopped evolving the taste sensory at about five years old for me.

I’ll still eat them because I know they’re “good” for me but I won’t like 'em.

once youve really settled in to consistant training, you may find that you can eat much differently than you thought. i would recommend approaching it in that order also. train hard for a while, make training part of yout life, build muscle, then worry about diet. i eat pretty much what I want, but try not to let the ice cream, donut, and chocolate cravings get out of hand. good luck and dont give up. Confusion

Not giving up, and I agree with pushing the body with the training and let it decide what it needs. Obviously I’ll have to coax it along on the mental side if the cravings don’t let up.

what did you end up deciding on shoes? did you get some heat in your training area?

For heat I have a propane tank with a satellite looking thing that burns the fuel for heat. It’s OK because the heat just goes straight up. I’ll try to rig up a low powered fan to move the heat towards me.

Totally forgot about the boots/shoes. Too busy and since I took last week off I didn’t equate cold feet and garage. There are some winter Chuck Taylors out there I may try. There are some winter boots that may do the job that have never been used but I need to try them on.

20131202 - Wk1D2 - Squats

Warm-up - a bit of snow shoveling pre-supper, supper, digest, bit o stretching, 10 BW squats, 5x50lbs, 20 lean-tos

Squat (w/ 20s lean-to holds after all sets except 5x50
85x5, 105x5, 130x3
140x5, 160x5, 180x5
5x5@85

More snow shoveling -about 6-8cm new powder. Hand cleared the driveway and sidewalks.

My wife is the best. She took the initiative and got the snow blower out and cleaned the drive-way and front walk. I did the back walk by hand. She is my APG - All Purpose Goddess.

Lean-to: So I have a resistance band tied to a support piece of my garage shelving. I was visualizing something like a cable crunch to work on the abdominals. My version is putting the band on my forehead like a headband and leaning forward and maintaining a plank posture, but at 25-35 degrees off vertical. Helps with the valsalva maneuver for squatting. Also does some great things for the neck as well.

It felt good to hold back a little on the last set. I came into the session fairly worn out from the day and ended feeling loose and pleasantly tired. Very glad to swap squats with deads.

your all stars should be real good for squats and deads if you have the room warm enough

Can’t really get the room warm with the open ceiling. Last night I managed to get by with wooly socks on in addition to sport socks ( it will also help stretch out the shoe as it’s a bit tight).

Wednesday is bench day so I can wear warm winter boots. I may need to figure out something for Friday’s deadlift. Projected high of -24. It will be warmer in the garage but by how much? I consider this “mental fortitude training”. Ha!

Well Crushed, you are definately tough enough, and maybe a bit masochistic.lol

Brrrrr! Maybe you can send out some smoke signals to make sure your other T Nation Albertains are ok.

I can’t help but say be safe with that band across your forehead.
