Rep Equivalents for Heavier DBs

I’m working hard at progressing each and every workout, but I wondered how I might do this when I jump up a dumbbell set?

I.e. I’ve been doing 10-10-10 with the 30kg DBs, then jumped up to the 32kg DBs and did 8-8-8 today. Would you say this was progression? Or is 2 reps dropped for a net 4kg rise not progressing?

Its tough to say. Some people calculate the total volume of weight lifted, some people calculate the time under tension with a heavy load, etc…

When you are talking about details like 2kg, or 2 reps its almost a moot point… When was the last time you read an article called “Add 2kg to your Bench!!”

Moving up in weight is good. Its the gold standard for progression. You are going in the right direction, so keep on keepin’ on. In a few weeks time I suspect you will be lifting those 32kg’s for 10-10-10 and then you will know you are getting better. Then a few more months will pass and you’ll be lifting the 35’s for 10-10-10…

I’d say it is progression. You’ve just gone up to a weight that you (probably) haven’t lifted before so it’s a new stimulus to you. Next work out aim for 10,8,8 for reps or just something more than 8,8,8. When you can do 10 reps for 3 sets on this new weight it’s time to go up again!

This is majoring in the minutia, so hard.

I hope those are dumbbell curls or something, not to sound like a prick. BUT, if you’re only shoulder pressing / benching that amount of weight in dumbbells, there is way more you need to be worrying about right now than at what rep point to progress.

Nope, I can only bench 2 x 32kg DBs for 8-10 at this stage- I know you’re hesitant to “sound like a prick”, but you’re picking at an irrelevant fact here. Yes, I’m not as strong as I’d ultimately like to be, but I’m working hard both in the gym and the kitchen and progressing week by week. What I and many others don’t need is someone nitpicking that we’re not lifting as much as them- there’s always someone higher up the food chain than you, it’s what you do about it that’s important.

Why do you have 2 accounts?

Anyways shutupandsquat/porridge monster you are doing just fine just aim to make 2/2.5kg jumps in weight within your rep range biweekly and you will be making much progress.

I didn’t look at his history on shutupandsquat, but the porridge guy has a history of starting inane threads about once a month with about the same question. He’s been told to go hang out in the beginners forums more than once.

How is that even fun?

The important thing my friend is that you find a new way each workout to challenge your spirit and mind. Nothing great comes easy. To develop the ability to make ordinary things into extraordinary you must look deep inside yourself and reevaluate the meaning of all of this.
You must think for yourself if you really want to make something of yourself. =)

Whenever someone refers to a faceless stranger as ‘my friend’, you know he is about to say some retarded pyscho babble.

Easy answer. Youve progressed when you get sets of the same reps at a heavier weight. 1 step back 2 forward is still progression.
