Religion Catch All

That’s what this is? I’ve seen people ‘casually’ do this with oxycodone at house parties (I’ve NEVER done this). The opiate epidemic never reached Australia as it did America. The stigma associated with opiates never fully came to fruition here and thus somehow highly addictive opiate based painkillers aren’t seen within a similar light to heroin.

Yeah, I think the term started in Asia. That’s what people did instead of injecting to “prevent addiction” lol. Lots of ways to justify drug use amongst users.

As to religion, how is the scene throughout Asia (VERY broad area, not going to list any specific countries if you catch my drift).

In Australia a large portion of the populace either identifies as atheistic or as having “no religion”. I found this to be in stark contrast compared to where I resided within the US. I even had a psychiatrist back there tell me perhaps I’d feel less empty if I believed in god. What a meme, particuarly considering I’m not an atheist.

I will forever be empty dammit, there is a deep void within me that nothing will fill until I find purpose. No amount of preying OR hedonism will ever fix this.

Our societal constructs differ from that of the USA. Absent of religious influence content/actions deemed appropriate differ. I always found it amusing within the US when words like “fuck” and “shit” were cencored on the tv.

Most are religious countries other than Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and China. And in these countries, the Chinese population is the majority.

So, the thing is, even if they don’t list any religion on their ids, they do believe in, and practice lots of religious customs and even have religious holidays. Lot of people believe in superstition akin to tarot card readings, astrology and mediums in the West.

Fortune tellers make good money if they have good salesmanship.

So, even if most don’t specify a religion, you can’t take the official stats seriously in these countries.

No, I get what you mean.

Also, I told you before I don’t think people in general are one-dimensional by nature, which is probably why we tend to disagree on stuff like the validity of IQ tests(not that I don’t believe in them but I think various factors have not been taken into consideration pertaining to certain racial demographics and countries), movie censorship and vice. I ask you some potentially offensive questions sometime to dig into more of your thought process, not to be combative. You have your own unique experience, and so do I.

I’ve even had a theory that the reason why Chinese people score so high on IQ tests is because the language itself is based on patterns and stuff not unlike some of the questions in such tests. In spelling tests, we’d do logical deducing of words we forgot, but had a vague idea of how to spell them by guessing the right patterns according to their meanings and context.

Here are some examples:

家 : Home

Notice at the top there’s a “roof” covering lots of lines that look like tree branches? Family tree, geddit? Actually, the latter means something similar but not quite and I can’t be bothered to look up the history behind the word.

But remember the “roof” part.

女:Female

Thy name is frailty .Not kidding. Here is the word for “male”: 男. The top is grain(田 which we will see later), as in toiling the land, while the bottom is strength(力) #canceldt79

嫁:To marry.

An amalgamation of “female” on the left and “home” on the right since a woman marries into the man’s home. #toldyoutocanceldt79

富:Wealth.

Typically means family wealth or luxury. it’s the same “roof” as the word " home". It means you’re well fed (mouth口)cause you have lots of grain (田).

客 :A guest in your home

Same “roof” as home yet again.

Word underneath(各) literally translates to “piece” and doesn’t mean anything on it’s own. It is used combined with another word, in this case: 各(种), which means “various”. So the guest isn’t part of your home and he’s one amongst various future and past guests.

Note that I’m vastly oversimplifying lots of things and being pretty liberal with my interpretation of SOME of the words above just to make my point about IQ tests and shit like pattern recognition and other stuff. There are other things in the language that have a carryover effect too but they’re too complicated to get into.

P,S

PLEASE NEVER EVER TATTOO ANY CHINESE WORD INDIVIDUALLY ON YOURSELF WITHOUT A TATTOO ARTIST WHO’S FLUENT IN THE LANGUAGE.

Most words are meaningless when used on their own. It’s why people are laughing at the words on Mulan’s sword in the new live action movie since NONE of the words would be used like that in Chinese.

It’s the equivalent of those silly t-shirts they sell to tourists in non-Engish speaking countries with shit printed on them like 'Loving Fun Make Day Happiness".

While I agree with most of what you’re saying, I think people think extreme thoughts because of fear. of something, @BrickHead has his own that I don’t agree with and it’s pretty fun to debate these issues but that’s not my point.

I’m the same when it comes to others that him and you may or may not agree with,

I’m fairly well off now and not someone who desires power and influence cos I’m pretty much just a fun loving guy who doesn’t want to be fucked with by any form of authority. but it’s an irrational fear of being poor again that makes me work like I’m still in my 20s sometimes to the detriment of my health.

My youngest brother wanted to study film and media in university and I vehemently objected to it for this same reason. However, since I already had experience managing employees of his age, didn’t pull authority on him kike our dad would. I told him to write any short film he wanted and I would produce and fund it and give him full creative freedom.

We did this. This was in the late 2000s so the equipment was till the really heavy and bulky kind. .

In the end, just the logistics alone were such an eye opener for him it turned him off filmmaking. I ended up directing most of the short film. He’d start off with the proper script, story boards and shit early in the day and then realize that we were behind schedule and just get the actors to improvise while I held the camera since I already had MORE experience producing ads that the cameraman he employed. I relegated the camera man to holding the mics in the end lol.

After that, he decided to study Business and Finance instead cos this shit wasn’t as cool in reality.

The thing is I ommitted to tell him it was EXACTLY the same shit I went through when I had to produce ads in the hope that he would change his decision. You get better with this shit, just like you get better at an instrument and soon it becomes second nature. But I never told him this and it’s bugged me for years.

Now I don’t know if he’s happy doing what he does. He hates talking about work. Maybe I made a mistake and should have let him sort his life out himself. I don’t know. I just didn’t want him to end up POOR because I know the reality of the industry and he’d most likely get a job in a one of the many small ad company doing mostly planning and production for half of what he’s earning now. There’s isn’t even a demand for cameramen here so most are freelancers. And I can’t just employ him and give him a high salary in some made up post since ad production is just a small part of what we do and I’m accountable to my guys who have been with me through hell and back. Ethically and morally, it wouldn’t be fair to them… But I would have the means to give him a sizable allowance since I don’t have kids.

So, I don’t know.

My thoughts are that we bust our asses so the next generation can enjoy the fruits of our labour and have the ability to pursue their interests that bring them happiness with something to fall back on financially.

On the other hand I worry that when shit happens, like what we’ve seen with COVID, some entitled snowflakes just take things for granted. If something worse were to happen, they’d just crumble and give up.

It’s definitely a lot to think about that’s kept me up at night sometimes.

Shit is complex, man.

RACIAL EIPTHET!!! I’m taking this obvious grammatical error entirely out of context!

It’s a difficult conundrum, one (usually) only wants what’s best for their offspring, younger siblings etc. The way I see it, influence can be given within the form of positive encouragement, assertion (authoritative stance), by setting an incentivising example/examples or by being a dick and artificially pushing someone a certain way because YOU know what’s best for them.

I can’t definitively tell you as to whether what you’ve done with your brother was the right call or not, I wasn’t there. That being said, I don’t think you’ve done the wrong thing. As opposed to letting a hard headed, naive individual out into the unforgiving world to get eaten alive you catered towards creating an experimental environment wherein a set of aspirations could be trialled. It isn’t as if you’d rigged the film to fail, you merely showed it “as it is”. This is the approach I typically advocate for when dealing with teenagers/those who aren’t quite aware of what they’re getting themselves into. People need to make their own decisions as opposed to artificially pushing an individual towards one direction as this can backfire tremendously, creating mistrust and resentment down the line.

Depending on the age of said individual one is trying to influence, an authoritative/assertive stance can be SOMETIMES effective… for a child… you can’t tell a 19y/old “go to your room without dinner”.

I applaud you for rising up to your current situation and becoming the productive member of society you are today. I’ll admit, had I been subject to your upbringing I would’ve either succumbed to drug addiction or I would’ve committed suicide (primarily due to untreated medical pathology, a means of self medication and/or giving up entirely).

The thing is I COULD since I’m the eldest son, which means I had the same authority as our father in his absence.

If I had ordered him to take up the course I wanted him to take up, which was Finance he would have listened.

The point is I didn’t have to do it. The method used was different. The outcome was the same.

Perhaps it also would’ve been easier to take the assertive route

But imagine he isn’t happy (you’ve stated he doesn’t talk about his work situation). Had you been assertive it’s plausible he would’ve pinned you to the source of his discontent. Rather now he has a snapshot as to how the alternative could’ve been and has taken up finance on his own accord.

It would, but I’m pretty anti-authoritarian. I think authoritarianism is generally an inferior method of getting things down which would lead to shit coming back to you with a vengeance in the future like you stated in the rest of your post.

Of course, there are lots of exceptions where it’s required such as in the military.

One of my guys uses some sort of Japanese inspired method of child raising, which isn’t entirely non-authoritarian but done in a way through a display of controlled, mock anger, a time-out to let the child calm down and reflect on why his dad had such a reaction, and then verbal communication in a calm but authoritative tone so the child feels the shame of the bad act he’s committed.

No beating, no shouting, no threats no real punishment other than the time-out - nothing. That’s all I know.

I don’t know how he does it and everything else but his kid is unbelievably obedient and well mannered and socialized. The dude and I own another small business together and most of our clients are Japanese. He spent hours picking their brains on child rearing over several years.

“ALL RIGHT CADETS… DROP AND GIVE ME 100, unless that is you don’t feel like doing these push-up’s. If not you can go back to your bunks and take a nap but I’d prefer it if you didn’t”.

Somehow no one decides to leave

Neurobiological makeup can also factor in regarding a child’s behaviour. Like politics, parenting is a fluid medium. Differing styles of parenting are more/less effective depending on the child at hand.

At times within regard to parenting it isn’t always black and white. I think we are all “winging” it to an extent, esp when it comes to concepts like raising a child. Initially up until I was around ten I thought my parents were THE authority. Through careful obervation I realised my parental guardians had flaws/quirks and eccentricities just like everyone else. They weren’t omnipresent beings and despite an age discrepancy/more life experience they don’t ALWAYS know what’s best for you (but they frequently do, esp if it’s regarding some impulse decision like running off to be a rockstar prior to graduating high school)

“Good” parents however will support a child in unlocking their full potential.

Did you guys run fucking seventy kilometres?

No it’s supposed to be a march but not really a march. Basically you’re just walking. How do you run 70 km with 30 kg of shit on you lol?

Btw I changed the terminology of some stuff to not reveal my location although they mean the same thing.

P,S: 70 km is obviously hyperbole, so don’t get the wrong idea. The longest I’ve done was 20+ km.

The “worst” I went through was POW training, which was tough but kinda fun if you have my kind of sense of humor.

Military dudes who haven’t experienced real combat aren’t badasses at all, at least where I’m from.

“Starvation simulator”

There’s a lot more than that but I can’t go much into them. Let’s just say that when you want to verbally abuse someone while he’s blindfolded for a couple of hours, make sure you get good “actors” and they aren’t people the person already knows lol.

Can’t go into the rest.

Here’s the thing about tradition Asian societies that people often forget. Mental illness isn’t taken as seriously as the West. In Chine, my schizophrenic relative was treated as though he was just an asshole by relatives and even his father since they know much about shit like this and punished him like any misbehaving kid would be.

Clinical depression is not something we even talk much about nor take seriously TODAY even in developed countries. There’s a strong social stigma that prevents people from even going to see a psychiatrist. They’ll try alternative shit like traditional Chinese medicine or just go to GPs and say they’re “stressed” so they just get benzos and not actual drugs to treat depression.

People generally have the impression that your mind is either defective so you’re afraid to tell them, or you’re just mentally weak since they can’t see the physical symptoms. Some dudes from my generation just do endure it for so long they end up resorting to doing crazy shit like run around naked in public not because they’re crazy, but as a cry for help to be taken seriously.

Ironically, the first institution to really take this shit seriously was the army since people who couldn’t handle the pressure of just training would commit suicide, sometimes taking out others with them.

It took lots of time for me to explain the effects chemicals have on the brain to finally make his parents treat his condition seriously and get him checked out and eventually warded in a mental institution for some time.

And this mental institution was so underfunded it was a pure shithole compared to other hospital in the city. It’s a hours drive to the ouskirst of the city and looks exactly like those hospitals you seen in 70s horror movies.
