I found the book where I first saw the differentiation between “coldrakes” and “dragons”. It’s Dragonworld, by Byron Preiss, J.Michael Reaves and Joseph Zucker. Decent story. Read it so many years ago, I don’t remember how old I was. Have never read any of the Dragonlance series though.
Thanks, brider.
ANOTHER review for ROF has appeared on the net: http://www.aintitcool.com/ display.cgi?id=12693 (eliminate space at "/ display.." ) So far I have seen mostly good reviews (due to the Sneak Preview on Monday).
Spanky, I'd love to see a live-action of "Batman Beyond" since I love the series. However, you know who's #1 on the list of playing the new, young Batman? Keanu Reeves. eeeuuuuwwwww.
Keanu Reeves huh? I personally think the guy can’t act his way out of a paper bag, but hey, if The Matrix was still a good film with him in it then maybe Batman Beyond could be, too… here’s hoping.
Check out this link: www.aintitcool.com/ display.cgi?id=12703 (eliminate the space at “/ display…”). This will provide you more info that is beginning to “leak” out on the Batman vs. Superman flick.
One more day til ROF opens. And it's STILL receiving postive word. Coolness.
Patricia
Patricia: Lots of good info on that site. Thanks! B vs. S is the type of film that could easily suck if not done right. I sure hope it doesn’t. Also sounds like Batman: Year One and Batman Beyond have a good chance.
Going with “the walking hormone” (My 17 yr old boy)tomorrow at 440PM EST. Will post review – fair warning…Sci-fi has to suck pretty bad for me not to get into it. I have high hopes for this one, though. Tanks fighting dragons – they couldn’t have had this cool stuff when I was a kid, I guess. Good thing I didn’t grow up. And ELF next week.
WARNING! Saw the sneak preview last night. If you don’t want to know anything, DON’T READ THIS POST! Without giving too much away, I was a little dissatisfied because of a growing practice in the movie biz. In the trailers I had seen, there were scenes indicating characters finding artifacts or a ruin, with dragon info before they took over. We never get to see the actual war, and there is a scene concerning an egg, which is never developed. Also, it is repeated how smart they are, yet this is never explained. I believe a lot of story background, and character development was left on the cutting room floor. If this was based on a novel, I’m going to search for it, to fill in the gaps.
Just got back from the theater. ROF just totally rocks. Matthew M meets Vitamin S, CG meets film – seamlessy, I might add. I won’t spoil it by giving details, but I think we have the best CG Ever in a couple of key scenes. Absolutely kick-ass action from start to finish. Every penny is up on the screen, lots of money shots. The trailers are a joke, they don’t even come close. Make sure you get stadium seating and get up close. Haven’t enjoyed a film this much since the Matrix.
MartinL, I agree that alot was left out that could have made the movie better. I just seemed like something was lacking the whole time but I just can’t tell what. The dragons were really cool along with all the effects, but I am a dragon nut so my opinion is probably not the best indicator.
Just saw it. And ryan, I know what was missing - but I don’t want to spoil the fun here by posting a possible “spoiler”. Despite that - wow. You’re right, huck - a couple of key scenes displayed phenomenal effects. I personally felt that Christian Bale and Matthew M. scorched their scenes like dragon’s breath with their presence. Yes, there are plot holes. But them dragons are so unbelievable to behold that you’re paying more attention to them than them plot holes.
What's kinda funny is that our friends who saw this with us had "Dragonslayer" on when we got to their house. Dragons are cool.
The plot was fine. I didn’t expect to see the entire battle for Earth, etc. It was clear what Quinn’s and Van Zandt’s motivations were. I think we can be too analytic sometimes. It’s a movie about dragons, for pete’s sake. Just enjoy it. Entire sequence with archangels very cool. I am sure, Patricia, that we are talking about the same scenes ‘full body shots’ I guess you’d call them. First ever Dragon front double bicep. Dragons are cool. I have a big one on my left shoulder. PS My kid (who knows about these things I guess - he reads fantasy) says that they are not dragons but wyverns. Dragons have 4 legs and wings. Then there are wurms, which are like dragons, but larger, with no wings. My guess is it varies depending on which cultural legend your favorite fantasy author is stealing from.
Wow… Mathew McNugget(sp) really put on some beef for this role.
I tell you what, huck: I’m seeing this damn thing again. The theater we saw this in does have wall to wall screens and stadium seating. But I do want to get closer next time. Especially to see the details of that scene with the bull dragon shooting fire onto Matthew M’s convoy. OH MY GOD. That scene was unbelievable. But yeah, the archangel’s dive sequence was amazing. But one thing that I really loved were the shots of the dragons twisting and turning as they were flying. Beautifully done.
Oh and here's some trivia: A couple of Star Trek vet's were in this flick. We had the Borg Queen from First Contact who was the young Quinn's mom (Alice Krige who was also the "ghost" in "Ghost Story"), and Dr. Bashir from Deep Space Nine who was Quinn's radio guy (Anthony Siddig). I spotted them right away. And a li'l extra note: Dracula 2000 was Creedy (Gerard Butler).
P you’re designated queen of trivia. I may go again myself in a few weeks. Next week is ELFreaks. Now that I think about it, the scene you decribe and the the other scene at the castle had a luminosity similar to that of an oil painting, while still looking VERY real. -I would love to know how they did that. Fianl MM scene is classic. I love movies where the good guys win, love heroes, and really dig it when the hero has balls. And MM put on significant meat. During the fight scene, watch when his shirt is off, he is lean as can be, looks very hard as well. By the way, I’ve been in a few fights. Anyone taking a beating like that would NOT just get up and walk off. You’re talking full range punches with bodyweight behind them to the side of the jaw. Give me a freebie like that, and I could level anyone anywhere near my size. That guy would have been out. Oh wait, it’s just a movie about dragons. I forgot.
Oh yeah: some of those scenes could definitely stand alone as “works of art”. Spectacular stuff being displayed. This makes the second film we’ve seen with fantastic CGI. Minority Report was the first. As for the dragons heres, the detail work on the wings alone were amazing.
Also, huck: I completely (well, so does Ko) understand what you're saying about the fight scene. And what you're saying is exactly why I do not like Fight Club. With all the bare knuckle fighting - someone should have walked away with a broken hand, wrist, etc. Oh well - another discussion......BUT we're gonna be seeing ELF on Saturday. Woo Hoo! This looks like a REALLY fun movie.
“Anthony Siddig”? Do you mean ALEXANDER Siddig, who changed his name from Siddig El Fadir while on DSN, and is the nephew of Malcolm McDowell who played Sauron in Star Trek: Generations? Oh, yeah, that guy. ![]()
Grumble This just wasn’t what I expected. I guess I’m disappointed because I had such incredibly high expectations for ROF (Or ‘Dragons and Tanks’ as I like to call it.) Yeah, the visuals were fantastic, but these days I need something more. Someone hinted at it earlier, but actually -showing- the dragons taking over the earth would have been great. This movie is a classic example of what myself and my associates have termed ‘The Independence Day Effect’ That is, instead of having some climactic battle scene where the enemy is overwhelmed by sheer brute, conventional force (at great cost to both sides), they get taken out by some guy uploading a 16-bit virus to the alien mothership supercomputer via his Mac laptop. Or, in the case of ROF, the single male being taken out by a solo group of three people. Maybe it doesn’t seem as heroic, but don’t you just want to see a huge battlefield with tanks, apaches and dragons? They should have at least shown a dragon attacking a battleship or something cool like that. Hell, the friggin tank -didn’t even fire once- in the whole movie. Pity.
Demo: Yup - sorry, my bad. He was also married to Nana Visitor, who played Kira on the show. But I have a feeling you already know that ![]()
