Tell your friend about the V-Diet…

then tell him there are more sane ways to go about it

The V-Diet has its own forum for a reason.
Brook: I never reccomended high rep weight training in my original post. What I did say was this: HIIT isn’t ALWAYS better for fat loss, and untrained individuals would be better served ramping up their work capacity and general fitness before they go doing stupid shit like Tabata hill sprints that will just get them injured and overtrained.
work on your reading comprehension before you go running your mouth.

at the same time, what you said is common sense, and shouldn’t have to be said.
who in their right mind would take a deconditioned person and have them do HIIT for fat loss?

You may want to introduce your friend to EPOC. The metabolic disruption from lifting weights is vastly more than the calories burnt by walking every day, unless you were walking for a solid 6 hours per day.[/quote]
Usually when someone is talking about EPOC and “metabolic disruption” they’re referring to Cosgrove-style light weight, short rest period, Afterburn-style training. This, IMO, would be a mistake.
Again, worrying about EPOC (which, as I mentioned, is blown way out of proportion by those selling programs such as the aformentioned) is a bit foolish. Once again, at this point, a good beginers full-body routine + daily activity (walking, swimming, shooting hoops etc.) + a sane, calorie controlled diet (zig-zaging the calories is fine) is all that is needed.
I’m not necessarily trying to incite a flame-war, but some people act as if SS cardio is useless or even detrimental. As if people, including athletes and bodybuilders, haven’t been using it for decades to get lean.

BBers have also for decades eaten 5-6 (maybe more) meals/day
sorry, couldn’t resist
To my understanding after talking briefly about it with him, those numbers per day are max intakes. He gave me the impression that they are more or less boundaries rather then goals.
The guy in question is relatively arrogant and even after many injuries and failures, still only looks to himself for advice. Believe me, I have tried on many occasions to point him to articles, books, and places for adive on training programs and diet with no success. I was just looking for your thoughts on his weekly limit as opposed to an everyday calorie limit - for me/not him.
Appreciate the posts.

huh? Why would I want to edit?
your friends BMR estimation seems ok.
Using the Body Surface Area Fromula:
BSA @ 5ft 7in and 260 pounds = 2.42
2.42*(38/60 cals/min/lb) = 1.5 cals/minute
Which comes to a BMR of ~2200 cals/day
