RBlue's Training Log

I really want to do direct hamstring work like GHRs and ham curls, but I was advised that I shouldn’t with the pull I sustained last spring. Meh!

ps. nice avi! you’re such a cutie!

Obviously, I don’t know any specifics about the ham pull. But, isn’t increasing hamstring strength one of the factors in preventing another ham pull?

And, totally agree…cutie!

^ Git, you’re absolutely correct! But what I was told that the only things I should do as of now to strengthen the hammies are more indirect work like rack pulls, hypers, single leg pop-ups (or bridges), etc. Apparently, GHRs and curls are too aggressive. Who knows! But I’ll err on the side of caution until after this season is over.

Ah, gotcha. I thought they advised doing nothing…but I knew you did racks pulls and so on. I wuz confuzed.

Sorry RB for my 'jack of yer thread.

Hey,
I was skimming through your log, training looks good, are you training for powerlifting specifically? I don’t have the attention span to get through 29 pages sorry :stuck_out_tongue:
Nice to see another Canadian on here

I like the way you think: going for max effort sumo pulls in the middle of everything else you’ve got goin’ on! Very bad-ass.

yeah for leave of absence! and I love me some pad thai.

pouts I still can’t see your new avi… guess I’ll have to check back demain…

hey Rachelle! hope you are getting to use that awesome gym at your dental school! check in here when ya can, you must be swamped.

Hey Blue! Hope you’re well and getting settled in. I was browsing some dresses online and I saw a model on the bebe website that reminds me so much of you, only not as gorgeous and shapely of course.

Hello ladies!

I have been exceedingly neglectful of my log, and of the compound. I’m afraid that’s going to have to continue, my schedule is ridiculous (almost 12 hours on campus today, albeit gym time included, but this was a short day for me), but I figured I’d drop in, say hi, and try to keep this at least marginally up to date!

I am absolutely LOVING dental school! The sheer volume of work, and long days of class (7 to 9 hours of class time a day is the norm) is pretty overwhelming, but the material is definitely interesting at least! Especially my anatomy labs, holding a heart, and brain, and lungs in my hands is absolutely amazing! And seeing how it’s all arranged in a cadaver’s torso: doubly amazing! Plus we get to make models of teeth out of wax, which is like art class (only with a crazy deadline and way more stress, but still!).

It also helps that my classmates are all fabulous. It’s funny, the interview and selection process really seems to gather people of similar personalities. I get along with everyone. I am almost having too much fun!

My training was very sporadic the first month and a half, what with moving in, Orientation/frosh week, getting adjusted to classes, the requisite stress-linked cold that’s made it’s way through the entire class of 56 students, and tweaking my knee thanks to my terrible decision to try playing on an indoor soccer intramural team (the game was sooooo fun. But I really should have stopped playing the first time I tweaked my knee, rather than going back on after ‘walking it off’ and repeating the process 4 more times during the game).

Prior to the knee tweak, I worked up to 135 for 3 reps on bench, was able to rep 3 solid chin-ups, worked up to 155 for 5 on back squat (pathetic!!), and worked up to 225 for doubles on sumo deads.

Since the knee tweak, worked up to 135 for 3 on zercher squats, 95 for 5 on bench (wasn’t pushing myself though), managed 1 and 1/2 chins (ugh), and today worked up to 205 for doubles on conventional deads. These deads felt DAMN heavy.

My goal is to try to work back up to my previous maxes, but it comes secondary to staying on top of classes, so we’ll see how it goes. If I can at least make some sorts of gains I’ll be happy. I’ve lost almost 10 lbs, but I’m no leaner than I was, so I’m not happy about the muscle loss. It seems to be mostly gone from my ass too, NOT where I would want to lose it. Damn 8 hour days sitting in a freaking classroom!

On a positive note, I love having a glute-ham raise bench. Those fuckers are deceptively hard. Unweighted they feel pretty good, but I add just a 5-lb plate, and it’s disastrous!

Alright, sorry for the long, rambling post. I could proof-read it and up it’s coherency, but I’ve got a shit-ton more to do before bed, including shower & eat! Hope all you amazing women are doing well, and I’ll try to check in more frequently! But I apologize in advance for the lameness of the workouts to come.

BLUE!!! happy you are loving dental school! :)!

sindie im following you around this morning. and I LIKE the view from back here!

blue, darling, teeth professions hold a special place in my heart and hearing how much you like it is getting me all verklepmt.

also, this isnt exactly the best time for you to be worrying abt your #'s in the gym… going is the most important part, and pushing yourself while you’re there.

keep kicking ass!

glad to hear u’re loving dental school! yay!

Hey Blue!
your still looking mighty fine(peeked your pic you know where)

Sounds like you are enjoying the whirlwind that is your new life!

Cbear–> EEE!! :)!

13 hours on campus, culminating in a decent lower body workout. I felt really beat after my day (caught myself nodding off in the library prior to my workout), so steered clear of the big lifts, and did a higher volume session:

(1) Drop-sets on seated hamstring curl:
110 lbs (don’t know how accurate the weights are) x15
70 lbs x17
50 lbs x16 plus 20 partial reps

(2) Single-leg leg press (high foot placement) 4x10: 2 plates. Knee felt decent on this, but my strength has definitely dropped in my left leg since I tweaked it.

(3) Single-leg seated ham curl 4x6: 50 lbs

(4) Single-leg glute bridges with foot on bench: 2x20 per leg

My glutes were absolutely seizing up by the end of this. To get the blood flowing, finished up with an easy 10 mins on the stationary bike, then rushed to get changed and catch my bus.

Of course, I missed it by 20 seconds or so. I could have waited half an hour for the next one, but I really wasn’t fond of the idea, so I extended my post-workout “cardio”: 34 min power walk home with 20 lbs worth of gym, school, and lunch paraphenelia on my back. I am beat.

On a school-related note, we got our first wax carving mark back today. We were told by the professor not to expect to pass the first tooth, and to aim for 70% or so on the rest of them (a pass is a 60%)… I got an 82%! We get to drop our lowest mark, so I feel like I have a nice little cushion now in case I have a lot of trouble with one of the harder teeth we have to carve later in the course.

Oh, and hai everybody! I missed you all!

Time for bed, 6am comes way too quickly.

I’m amazed you can do such a good workout after that long day. Have you thought about doing your training first thing?
Congrats on the tooth carving thing - awesome stuff.

so proud and happy for you!
