RBlue's Training Log

I wish I had some sort of hardcore story about the tear, but it is actually quite mundane. I was playing soccer, running in towards the net on a corner kick. The ball got cleared, I planted my foot & turned to follow it, and SNAP! Worst pain I’ve ever experienced!

I then waited 3 days before seeing a doctor, because I was pretty sure I could walk it off.

Doctor didn’t think I had ligament damage (no MRI because the waiting list was incredibly long), and figured it was probably meniscus (which it was too). I did physio, the knee seemed to improve rapidly, and the following season I signed up & played the first game. During the 2nd half, while playing in net, planted & turned again, and tore it all the way through then.

Finally got an MRI a few months later, which confirmed the tear, then surgery a year after that (ACL repair, & removal of meniscus tear). That was 2 years ago, and I’m doing MUCH better, although I’m afraid to play soccer again, and running for any length of time bothers my knee quite a bit.

No training today. Work from 10-6, then had some errands to run. I technically could head in there now, but I just had a glass of wine, and would much rather take it easy after the busy workday I had! Meeting a friend to see “Dear John” later tonight, then back to work 10-6 tomorrow.

So probably no gym till Sunday. Have a great weekend all!

Ah what the heck! Around here athletes get an MRI for an itch.lol

Nice job on Valeria! That challenge is on my list of things to do.

Good job on Valeria!
(curls are rough ain’t they? I hate them so much.)

You need to cultivate a little sistard mentality Alisa- look at yourself in the mirror and enjoy the show. Tell yourself that those muscles should help you with other lifts. If all else fails use the moment to scan the room for cuties (a lot harder doing these during deads and squats

this is true. Sistard hah.

Maybe if I’d been more of an important athlete… recreational soccer player isn’t very high up the list!

Hahaha! Such a good piece of advice! Those mirrors are at least good for something.

See, that’s exactly what i’m talking about. the ACL tear can happen over just a mis step. Meh. Well I’m glad you’ve recuperated and rehabbed!

And recreational soccer player is totally high up on the list :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh wow, what a week! Just over a week ago, I started working at a new store I was transferred to (4x longer drive to get there, ugh), and I also found out I got an interview with the McGill Faculty of Dentistry in Montreal!! I’ve applied to a few dental schools here in Canada, and had been waiting for replies, so I was stoked to get an interview (especially at that school, which only accepts about 30 students/year)!

Needless to say, it has been an extremely busy week & a half! I had my interview this morning, and I’m cautiously optimistic about the outcome. Just got home from the 6 hour drive back to the T.O. area, and I am DYING to get back in the gym! Gonna jump back into 5/3/1, 3rd cycle.

New maxes to base my % on:

Squat: 203.5 lbs + 10 lbs = 213.5 lbs
Bench Press: 135.5 lbs + 5 lbs = 140.5 lbs
Deadlift: 226 lbs + 10 lbs = 236 lbs
OHP: 72.5 lbs + 5 lbs = 77.5 lbs

Training tomorrow after work! Yipee!

Yeah, the ACL is a tricky mother fucker!

i hope you rocked that interview. catch your breath and then go kick some tail in the gym. those numbers are niiiice!

what exciting news! thinking good thoughts for ya!

Congrats on the interview!! Dentistry is a fantastic vocation.

Great goals - looking forward to watching you achieve them

best of luck on getting accepted!

Thanks so much for the encouraging words everyone! I’ve been checking my email like a madwoman all day, and there’s no way they’d get back to me so soon! But to be fair, I am still waiting to hear about interviews from two more schools, so I have a good reason to check my mail 20 times a day.

Today’s training:

Got to the gym today and started doing my regular warm-up (jumping jacks, leg swings, various split squats, etc), when Big M, the manager at my gym & my pre-competition trainer, offered to do an MAT assessment on me. He’s got his MAT (Muscle Activation Techniques) “jump start” certification, and is working towards his masters.

Not surprisingly, given my injury & surgery, I’ve got a few imbalances, which he worked on. He then had me do a few body weight squats, and they felt great! Then, as an experiment, he had me put my runners back on, jump around a bit, then he reassessed me, and the problems were back again! Definitely interesting stuff, he’s going to hopefully work on me some more in the future.

Then, I got into my squats, which were TERRIBLE today!!

(1) Squat 3x5: 140 lbs x 5, 160 lbs x 5, 180 lbs x 4 ==> EPIC FAIL! Was supposed to get at least 5, but I could barely eke out the fourth!
- I wonder if the MAT Big M did with me affected my strength?

(2) BB Reverse lunge 4 x 6: 135 lbs, 120 lbs last 3 sets ==> Don’t know what I was thinking with the 135, especially after the squat nightmare!

(3) GHR on standing ham curl 3 sets, 8/10/10 reps
- Normally do these on the lat pulldown station, but one was occupied, and the other was out of order, so I got creative.

(4) 1-leg swiss ball hamstring curl 5 x AMRAP: 5/6/6/6/6 reps
- Last 2 sets with left leg only; still the weaker of the two!

Overall, my workout felt pretty shitty today, but we all have those days! I’m interested to see how next week’s squats feel though, especially if I do any more MAT.

After all this, I played around a bit with my new exercise bands that I ordered from ironwoody. Yay for assisted wg pullups!

Hope you hear from McGill soon! There might be other dentistry schools but there’s only 1 Montreal.

I ordered my bands fro ironwoody last week and I still don’t have them. I will need to have the package tracked I suppose. The world is against me doin proper pullups.

It took much longer than expected for my bands to show up as well. Have faith!

You’re absolutely right, there’s only 1 Montreal… I love that city!

I don’t think, I would even THINK about doing any sort of lunges with 135!
