Raw Powerlifting

I say, let’s all just switch to olympic lifting, we’ll sidestep this debate all together!!

But really, I can see where Mozhne is coming from, powerlifting is an obscure sport because it’s very technical, putting gear into the mix makes it even more technical. People want to watch things they understand.
If that makes any sense.

I can’t think of another sport where auxiliary components influence the outcome so drastically.

This thread makes me soooooooo beyond angry I can’t possibly describe it. I’m gonna go beat the shit out of someone, and I’m gonna put my bench shirt on to do it, cause I’ll punch harder…

That’s a little harsh. Easy now, this is the INTERNET. Not real life. Breathe deep.

Dude, you are insulting a sport that I hold very dear to my heart. When my powerlifting career ended due to injury, I cried like a little bitch. I love competing, I love eating until I can hardly move, I love not being able to walk up the stairs after a squat workout. I love that my legs rub together and give me blisters when I walk. I love only being able to buy clothes from the big and tall store. And most of all, I love walking into a room and knowing, not thinking, but knowing, that I’m the strongest person there. I love that. And you are trashing that sport. How should I respond? Thanks for insulting my life’s work? I really aprreciate it?

This is the internet, goofball. We can be whomever we want to be. Numbers posted on the internet mean nothing withou a link to the results. In other words, I couldn’t care less what you came on here and posted and based on the rest of the crap you have spewed, frankly call bullshit. I think you are a liar.

If I wanted to share personal details on who I am I would have done it long before you wandered in here. There are a couple of people around here whom I help that know who I am, otherwise I choose to keep it private and that request has been honored. So tough guy, nice try but I’m not intimidated by some jackass on the internet.

My credibility lies in having participated in this sport for 20 years, competed in USPF, ADFPA, and now USAPL/IPF. In addition to having a decent PL resume, I have coached numerous National and World level athletes, help just about anybody who comes my way and am actively involved in the sport at the HS level having worked with several accomplished lifters who enjoy the sport and will likely participate in it on and off for the rest of their lives.

More importantly I have spent time with some of the most talented lifters and coaches on the planet. I am nothing compared to any of them and won’t even pretend to be. However, I am smart enough to know when to shut the fuck up and recognize when I am around people who know a hell of a lot more than I do.

Apparently this a characteristic we do not have in common.

Then: What are your lifts? Simple question. I never made it very far in powerlifting. Barely made the top 100 after years and years of trying. Won a couple of meets but there were far better lifters at most every meet I competed in. Never lifted anywhere but here in the west. Utah, Idaho, Nevada. Now if that isn’t backwoods Powerlifting I don’t know what is. I don’t know anybody from the Powerlifting Elite. I saw them one time in 1983 in Austin but that’s it.

My very best lifts: Bench: 352 (kilos used in contest, reason for 352 rather than 350…) No bench shirt, 198 lb. class. Squat: 550 used an Inzer Squat suit and those wraps that are black and red. My best real squat right before that meet was 465 and it was high. Deadlift: 596. Didn’t even know there was Deadlift support gear. So there you go. That’s it.

Last time I lifted in a meet was in Pocatello, Idaho in 2000. Had some decent lifts but there was a guy from Boise who kicked my ass. He opened with my third in the squat. You know how that ended.

I feel ya. I loved this sport too at one time. This is why it makes me sick to see what it has become. Things end dude. I can’t lift anymore. Well I can but the most I have benched in the past year was 300 lbs and that was touch and go. Squat? forget it. I could maybe muster a deadlift of 405 if I bonged a rockstar or two and somebody held a gun to my head!

I don’t care about your stated e-lifts and do not plan on sharing personal details with you. BTW, I took one of our lifters out to Pocatello for a tune-up and have a 'Bills Bad Ass Bench," t-shirt that I bust out every now and then. Amazing country out there.

Tell you what, why don’t you go here: http://www.powerlifting-ipf.com/

Click on the streaming video link, follow the directions, and watch some of the lifting. I would direct you to the squats and pulls of the 48 kilo women (there is a Chinese lifter who breaks the world total and dl record and her attempts are flawless) and the whole 75 kilo event.

If you don’t respect and appreciate the talent and dedication represented by these athletes then I have even less regard for your opinion than when this whole thing started.

Powerlifting isn’t in a sad state. It has it’s issues like anything else and has arguably become more fractionalized than ever before but I can assure you it is alive and well and I still consider it one of the greatest sports around.

I agree. Olympic lifting is great. One time I went and tried a workout with a guy who ran an Olympic Lifting program at a Junior High. Kicked my butt. This guy was maybe 150 lbs. and was a Math teacher and looked like a math teacher. But he was fast and strong. My shoulders were so tight from Powerlifting I couldn’t even hold the bar right.

934? Incredible. Do you recall a lifter named Sandlin from the early 80’s who tried a 1000 lb squat and tore his leg up? I saw that try in Austin Texas and to see 1000 lbs on the bar is something I never will forget. This guy was a coach at Clemson at the time.

Comprehension is the understanding and interpretation of what is read.

It is a recurring theme here. You read something on a forum then catapulted over here to post it and use it as a basis for your little ill conceived tirade before even trying to understand the context or implications of what was said.

As I said before, Hatfield was a geared lifter and one of (if not the) first guys to have squat stands removed on the platform to squat. He also has a daughter who is a prominent IPF/USAPL lifter. I don’t think he would go so far as to criticize and belittle his own daughter. There’s more to the statement than what was presented and I assume it was in regard to some of the BS that was floating around in the APF/WPO and IPA of which their own lifters got worked up about and is slowly being turned around.

In regards to Crain, he has stated clearly he is not a proponent of RAW lifting and thinks it is a sport without longevity (relative to the lifters staying in tact). Hell, he is a gear vendor for crying out loud.

My point is the whole basis of your post is flimsy at best and the more you dig to bolster it the weaker it becomes.

The bottom line is your opinion is yours. Nobody can take it away from you. Unfortunately for you it is based on misconstrued statements and just isn’t worth much.

I posted an actual post from RDC himself. Don’t criticize me for not backing up facts when you don’t post any facts: (links, actual posts)all you have written is your opinion.

My point is the whole basis of your post is flimsy at best and the more you dig to bolster it the weaker it becomes.

Flimsy? Again, I post my lifts, I post an ACTUAL post from RDC and I post a link to the opinion of a respected strength coach which lays out EXACT carryover from powerlifting gear. You still decline to post your lifts. Why? I don’t buy the “this is the internet and I won’t post personal info” it’s a friggin number. What are your numbers?

Look. You are either unwilling or are too stupid to realize that every time you post you further erode your credibility.

The article you posted by Boyle talks about one lifer who competes in WPC. Their lifting standards, gear allowance and weigh in rules are about as far out there as they get. It is an poor example to base as broad sweeping of an opinion as you are and is just another example of how far out of touch you are.

IRT Hatfield, I am going to treat the man with respect and assume he would not degrade his own daughter’s accomplishments. If you have a problem with this, so be it.

IRT Crain, I am way too fucking busy to go searching the internet to find posts, etc. Anybody who has been in the sport will confirm my characterization of him. It’s out there in front of everybody.

Calling me out? Buddy, you don’t even compete. At the base level you lack the ability to call me out.

Wooooooahhhhh this thread jsut got REALLY fucking funny.

If you’re going to go and say you’ve no respect for anyone who doesn’t lift to the standards RE gear that you’ve decided you could at least have achieved something.

I’m not in the habit of insulting ANYONE’s lifts, but since I’m one of the people you’ve no respect for since I compete in single ply gear I think I can make an exception.

You’ve put up those lifts with 15-20ish years of training? To be honest unless you’re severly disabled you’ve no right to comment on how anyone trains/lifts/competes with numbers like that because you obviously have no idea what you’re doing.

You’re not even a has-been. You’re a never was. Maybe that’s why you’re so bitter.

And before you ask, I’m 21, training about 3 years, best raw lifts of around 450/315/520 at 205-210. Best geared lifts of 485 (and will be close to 530 at the WDFPF world champs in 4 weeks)/400/550. Now, it’s all out in the open slag my lifts too if you want.

I don’t want to speak for APWsearch, but as someone who has a great deal of respect for him, and values his opinions highly I will say this. You’re a NOBODY next to him. His lifts are irrelevant, but I know he out pulls you. One of the reason he’s so well respected around here is because he knows what he’s talking about, unlike you. And has the experience and results with other lifters to back it up.

Thanks, Hanley. I respect you as well and appreciate the kind words.

This guy has overcommitted. He came on too strong at the start and now lacks the ability to finish.

The only reason numbers are becoming such a focus for him is because he has nowhere to go but downward with his current tract and is looking for a way out.

Needless to say, I’m not going to give it to him by trading e-lifts. It’s too easy of a way out for both of us.

Yes, and not everyone can make it in football, nor do football careers last indefinitely.

And it’s also why I wrote “enjoy”. Not everyone is in a sport for the fame, or the money, or the women. Some are in it for the love of the game.

I don’t know but that guy squatting in the video on the link posted must be close. That is a hell of a lot of weight. Don’t know the Bench either. Maybe Kaz, Maybe there is somebody now who has benched as much. Those guys have my respect.

Scott Mendelson, a shirted lifter who has lifted 1000 lbs on the bench, holds the bench WR @ 715 lbs. The raw squat is 948 lbs by Mark Henry. This means that if you take away the shirt from a shirted lifter, it doesn’t mean he’s worthless. It also means that everybody who squats 1000 lbs must be “a joke” to you.
