Raw Power

I may check that out. I think I’d like to squat twice a week and on one of those squat days have a heavy dead set after squats, working up to a heavy triple, double, or single, or like that. I am also not convinced that the one money set per lift is as optimal as it gets, I think a few top sets below failure can get you good results as well–maybe better. Smolov never took me to failure or really even near failure on any one set, and I think there’s a lesson to be learned there, even if you don’t run the type of volume and intensity that Smolov piles on you. I think there is some middle ground, I just need to find a way to organize a program for a few months that meets my needs, maybe using the Prilepin Table for guidance.

I always liked the idea of Front Squats after Deads, and agree I think squatting twice a week is perfect

Prilepin’s table is a very good guide and you can set up something really smart with it. The numbered Sheiko routines are basically just planned-out prep and peaking cycles, although I do not like the deadlift or bench programming.

I don’t know if you’re familiar with it, but something like Bill Starr’s 10/3/5 program is pretty cool, too. I ran that during a period when I was recovering from an injury and even though the weights were light, it was pretty tough sledding on the squats. Like I said, I really like a lot of those old-school programs.

yeah agreed even Madcow or Bill Starrs 5x5 is pretty cool

5’s day, deads, TM 420.

Deads: 135 x5, 185 x5, 235 x5, 285 x5, 335 x5, 355 x10 (dead stop).

Zercher Squat from Pin 2: 135 x2, 185 x1, 235 x1, 285 x1, 305 x1, 325 x1.

GMs (stiff leg and slow): 135 x5, 155 x5, 175 x5.

Notes: So, it was my first time deadlifting at the Y we joined, which is a pretty new and very nice facility, although the free weight section is too small and there’s only one power rack. I specifically asked when I joined if deadlifting was allowed, and I got an 'absolutely, yes, no problem." I wasn’t into my second set of warmups when there were 4 deadlift cops hovering over me like I had just shit on the floor. I knew this was going to be a problem with no good solution and I was feeling pretty snarky for some reason. I’ll skip the back and forth, including the claims about “clanking” weights ruining their concrete floor, my offer to help them sue their contractor for building a defective floor that was unsuitable for deadlifting, their suggesting that my “flawed technique” needed improving, my request for a demonstration on proper technique, and so on. Seriously, I don’t just drop the weight but its gonna clank a little. Needless to say, I didn’t make any new friends with the staff. I basically “resolved” the situation by stating that I’d try to be gentle, but that they needed to leave me alone for a few sets, and if they did so, I’d never deadlift there again.

All in all I felt good pulling tonight, but I am really feeling torched from the extra slow lowering of the weight on my top set. At least I got to take out my frustration on a huge stack of pancakes afterwords.

What the hell is it about people who act like deadlifting is a felony.

Deadlifts - No longer politically correct? An endangered species?

Sorry to hear Jack. I hope you can enlighten the staff.

Wow. Just reading about the keystone deadlift cops pissed me off. I can’t imagine how I would’ve responded if I were actually in your situation. Probably would’ve gotten kicked out…

“I specifically asked whether deadlifting was allowed when I signed up. I received assurance that it ‘absolutely’ was. So were you lying?”

^^^ Yup. I guess its another example of sales writing checks that operations can’t or won’t cover. I would not have been ticked if they would have just told me up front–not in the middle of my set when I am carb deprived and waiting for a refeed–that deadlifts were verbotten. The good news is I have other facilities to lift at, its just nice to be able to go to the Y with the family when its convenient.

5’s day, bench, TM 245.

Bench: 45 x25, 95 x5, 135 x5, 155 x5, 185 x5, 210 x12.

Krock Rows: 100s x 30.

Incline DB Bench: 50s x5, 70s x5, 100s x6, 75s x 9.

Australian Pullups: 20, 15.

Pec Dec: Some x 20, 20.

BB Row Finisher: 135 x20.

Notes: I was still torched from deadlifts, but I felt pretty good nonetheless. Morning BW 203.2, so I didn’t get bloated from the carb-up.

Same thing happened to me at the North Y in Winnipeg back in the late 80`s worked up to triple at 5 plates and an old gent(running the place) came and told me I was making to much noise ( kinda was grunting loud) and that I would hurt myself.
Packed it in and did some leg presses.
You are moving some nice weight keep up the hard work. How are the dogs ?

I’d deadlift anyway and tell them to do something about it. They could give you your money back or you could stuff a foot up their ass. Maybe tell the Y pussies to go eat a tampon with jelly on it. Glad to see you have other places to do deads.
There is an incline in my garage floor that begins at the door and rises toward the house. The incline is not steep but the bar will roll downhill if I place it to lift horizontal to the garage door. This gives me an added challenge when I lift because I am fighting the bar rolling away when I do deads. I love lifting in my garage, it’s hot and primitive and great.

Thanks for stopping by, fellas!

Unpleasant imagery here.

Sorry for your DL angst. Been there. Done that.

I stop by after all this time and see you’re wasting away and a troublemaker. I haven’t been in a Y in probably 30 years. Back in the day Y’s were one of the few places that had good weightrooms. At your present bw that’s some respectable deadlifting.

Ksnap, thanks for stopping by! Harry, I’m glad to see you back posting, and I am indeed both wasting away and a trouble maker. The Y is a very nice family place and I am going to try and behave because my wife and boy really love it there, and its a great community gathering place.

Last night’s HIIT: Skied two sets. It was absolutely a great summer night and I am getting used to my new stick. Squats today, then hopefully skiing the next three days. And I’m really looking forward to the Olympics, which, even with all its modern faults, is still the greatest sporting event on the planet.

Morning BW 202.4.

I was going to squat, but it was too damn nice out, so I skied instead. Squats tomorrow, probably.

HIIT, skied two sets. I’ll most likely squat tomorrow.

5’s day, Squats/Press, TM 370/170

Squats: 45 x10, 135 x5, 185 x5, 225 x5, 275 x5, 315 x7.

Front Squats: 135 x5, 185 x5, 225 x3, 275 x1.

Press: 45 x10, 95 x5, 115 x5, 145 x8.

WG Pullups: 10, 8, 6.

Dips: BW x15, +50 x8, +75 x4.

DB OHP: 70s x4.

Plank: 1 min.

Notes: I decided to double up on training days today. Hopefully skiing tomorrow, but allergies are killing me.

Nice WO I like those front squats after the back squats
