Raw, Drug Free Thread

24 years old
230lbs currently
540/315/510 (competition)

I’ve only competed in a few WNPF meets but it’s been a lot of fun. To any guys who are on the fence about competing, go for it and have fun. I typically train alone so I learned a lot by being around experienced lifters. Currently focusing on improving my body comp and hopefully competing in 220 class.

Cool thread. Sounds like a lot of hard working dudes out there.

Question for people who have competed/are planning on competing (IE everyone but me, ha-ha)

How do you stop yourselves from crapping your pants/thinking you will totally fuck up your set up and make you miss every single attempt?

HmmMMm?

I really want to compete, but just the mere thought of it sends me to the crapper.
I can’t even begin to imagine how I would feel on the actual meet day.

Sorry for off topic/hijack-ness.

I’ve competed at some of the highest levels of athletics (all throughout high school, college, post-collegiate) and even with that I was still nervous as could be my first meet. Butterflies in my stomach and all sorts of nerves all over the place. After you get your first squat out of the way you get all that out and it’s just like another day in the gym.

If the federation allows it in their raw division than it is raw. Simple as that. Do not let this get into the bullshit argument over wraps/belt not being raw. Raw is what the federation you’re competing in says it is at that time.

I’ve been around some pretty strong people and they all feel this way. Sometimes the pressure makes you do things that you didn’t even know you were capable of.

I’m in

21 yrs old 148lb. weight class. Weighed 151.8 this morning. I guess since everyone is including heights i’m 5’7

Best gym lifts:
325 bench
515 deadlift/475x5
405 squat

Best meet lift:
485 deadlift last October - it shows up as multiply on powerliftingwatch.com but I competed at Night of the Living Dead raw - but I guess since it was an open gear showcase they stuck it with multiply >:(

I have never tried any gear except for a belt

I’m actually going to deadlift today so I will use this thread as motivation to break my deadlift rep pr and get it on video[/quote]

Those are some solid numbers. How long have you been training for?

JVillan checking in. 152 lbs @ 5’6", competing in the 145 lb category (IPF weight classes changed in 2011). My best and only meet numbers are from last year, with 308/215/419. Best training maxes are 345/255/455, no wraps or belt. My first meet this year will be the UTM Classic on June 23, and I’m hoping to at least beat my deadlift max.

I’m 21 now and just finishing up college, started winter of frosh yr. of high school from a small 4’11 98lb frame, 1 rep bench max of 65lbs. So what, almost 8 years?

I’ve got my first meet in two weeks. Its the NASA Texas East Open. I’ll weigh in right at 131-132 and my goals are 280/225/400. I’m 5’4. I just benched 225 last week, and the squat and deadlift numbers are educated guesses based on rep maxes. About 7-8 weeks ago I got 375, and a couple of weeks ago got 350x4.

Its not really that bad. The meets are usually pretty low key, and you just do your thaaaang. Think about it, if you can squat 400 pounds, then you can squat 400 pounds! No need to overthink it, you know your max. I dont even see it as a performance, its more just proof. Just a way of showing people, hey this is what i do you thought i was lying motherfucka. Other sports have more variables, in powerlifting its just you and that barbell, and you two have been at it for years. Just make sure you get plenty warm up sets in. I worked up to 385 warming up when my max was 425.

Oh and walk around the platform where you will lift a hour or 2 beforehand, it sounds funny but honestly just walking around the area and stretching in the area you will perform takes alot out of the nerves

@JC where are you at in Ohio?

I am so jelly.

5’9.5" 190-195lb

405/300/475 not all at the same time though. In a few weeks, probably closer to 405-415/265-285/485-95 but that’s very speculative, will know for sure in 4 weeks. Shoulder hurt and changing my grip width on bench is what did that. I’m not sure what to expect for bench considering I’m changing from training for a wide grip to a medium (index on rings to pinky barely inside the rings). Guess I just need to work my tris and shoulders harder compared to my chest and work upper back more compared to my lats.

In a small suburb right near Cincinnati

Holy shit you guys are all a shit ton stronger then me …I have a lot of work to do

Herro all. 22, 92kg (202lb). Last meet I got 160, 110, 250 (350, 240, 550). Working for a 600kg total before the end of the year. Next meet in July or August.

Nice to see all the people who are paving the way

I might be the only one, but anyone here ever do a single event meet? Im doing deadlift only July 6th.

OKAY what does everyone think of this approach RE:Meet nerves.

Oh, and please keep in mind this is exactly what I did when I was getting anxiety over beating final fantasy III (super nES) as a child and it worked wonders.

So say I get overly strong (lOl). OOPS, and apologies in advance for my constant comparisons to FFIII.
Like with my characters I walked around fighting bad guys for hours a day so I could get insanely strong (gain experience/HP whatever you call it). I did this so that when it came time to finally battle Kefka (main dude) I would be UNSTOPPABLE.

Uhh ya so say I get myself up to a 2-plate squat that I can rep out a few times no big deal, BUT going into the meet I make like 200 my final attempt. HAHA. Then there is no pressure because it’s obviously SOoOo easy, BUT still a respectable weight. Like right now if I could look to the future and think that a 200lb SQ was easy I would be very pleased.

So I trained my guys for months on end and I was finally brave enough to battle kefka and I ended up destroying him in about 2 minutes with my “weakest” dudes. It was weird. I mean I actually beat him faster than my brother did and my brother was a master (sorta). I thought Kefka was just ‘playing’ dead and was going to come back bigger and stronger, but he was ACTUALLY dead.

UHH my thoughts are all over the place.

There is a meet in Edmonton in October that I think would be perect. That gives me TONS of time to ramp up my HP and it’s even within busing distance from my house! I could just walk a block, catch the 4, and I’d be there in like 12 mins. That seems perfect. I think I am going to get a membership set up and register for this thing.

Thanks guy!!! I LOVEUALLLLL.

You don’t have to be THE best. Just be YOUR best. I don’t compare myself to guys like Ed Coan and KK. That’d be dumb and I’d lose all motivation and start an herb garden outback. Just sign up for a meet with a goal and go for it. You’ll be fine. People on this site tend to make fun and be assholes and rarely remember powerlifting is a huge family and you should push everyone to get better. If you only squat 135 pounds but you show up at a meet, I say good for you. You had the balls and dedication to show up and lift at a meet.
Stop thinking in terms of winning and losing and start thinking in terms of progression.

Hope I helped Spock

This is what I tell other people, but honestly, from a personal standpoint, I get a serious thrill out of comparing myself to the best. They’re always in the back of my head, and I’m competing against until I finally overtake seeking that final victory adds lbs to my total like nothing else.

Spar, thats cause you are GOOD haha.
