That’s my philosophy as well. I appear to be Black, and I’m muscular, so there are two Perception Mills that many people get started when they see me. I listen to a wide spectrum, from Beethoven to the Toadies to Garbage and Prodigy. I even throw down a little country every so often.

 I agree with the last part of the post as far as rap culture is concerned, where listening to stuff that's old isn't cool.  "Wy's he playin' that OLD shit?"  Maybe 'cause it sounds GOOD?  Personally I don't do everything based on what my buddies think is cool, or what will impress them.

Well then what constitutes “real” hip-hop? I’m not trying to argue or anything just want some clarification. I know A LOT of mainstream rappers can’t get with the likes of Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli lyrically, but there are a few that can who don’t necessarily get the “props” they deserve as an emcee because of their “mainstream” appeal.

Real hip-hop has more to do with the lyrical skill than anything else. It’s hard to describe, but you know it when you hear it. Of course their will always be disagreements. Manistream appeal does muddy the waters quite a bit to give props to many artists.

“Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugar Hill Gang is seen by many as what hip-hop was about, or the forefathers of the genre. Yet if you dissect it literally it’s no different than a lot of the “hip-pop” that’s on the airwaves today, minus the gold teeth (my goodness is that fuckin’ stupid), profanity, and half-dressed women.

Rapper’s Delight, in all fairness is more of a milestone cut than anything else. It was one of the first attempt to bring this artform to the mainstream to say that it is viable. You are right that it is more “rap” than “hip-hop”, but it holds a special place in “hip-hop” because of what it symbolizes, not necessarily because of lyrical skills.

And on the topic of women, why are they absolved of all responsibility in these videos. You can’t expect the rappers to have much respect for them if they don’t have enough respect for themselves as women not to convey themselves as sex objects. What’s so different about a rapper making a video with half-naked women, and Hugh Heffner mass-producing media with NAKED women?

They shouldn’t be absolved. And you are right with the Heffner analogy, there is no difference.

I’m glad this distinction was made as well. Also, a further distinction should have been made about different groups of African-American as well. We are not all the same, nor do we all share the same taste in everything. The problem is that the ignorance of African-Americans is what is being sold to the public because it feeds into much of the racist beliefs about African-Americans in this country. We are very diverse, but this diversity is not as marketable as ignorance. (Sorry, this is a sore spot with me.)

BTW, I enjoy other types of music as well, metal, reggae, classical, dance, alternative, jazz, blues, gospel and some even some country (some of those country babes are hot too! :))

I’m sorry but none of you guys live in the UK, so how on fucking earth can you even comment on what is or isn’t?

95% of young black males in the UK think they are all hustlers/gangsters, and go round in groups of 4-10 thinking they are fucking hardcore. In the UK, there is an ever growing gun crime issue. None of the 23 fatal gun shootings last year, in my city, were carried out by white people (a 14 year old girl died).

Because our government doesn’t want to address the issue, just incase they get labeled as racist 9and loose votes), every year right wing groups such as BNP and National Front gain loads of votes, and are winning seats all over the place.

The only problem with this statement is that for something to be mainstream, it has to be easily accessible and easily recognizable. So most mainstream stuff is unoriginal and boring (yea, I get it, you’re hardcore, you shoot people, and you slap bitches).

Secondly, rap artists on MTV are often picked up because of their image or the flash rather than actual song writing or rapping ability. Witness 50 cent, who’s a fucking terrible rapper and his songs suck. If you can listen to “Magic Stick” with laughing, you’re a more serious man than most (and not becuase 50’s some comedic genius, the song is just idiotic).
