Ranzo Training log

Ranzo,
Thank you for taking the time and effort to produce the video. It is always good to watch how other fighters train and move. Londonboxer is far more experienced than me in explaining movement, but, I used to have a coach who always preached" your lead leg is like the front sight on a rifle, always get in on target first and the rest will follow". This falls in on what LB was saying. Again, thanks. I am an envious of your training facility and whats seems to be plenty of fighters to work with.

You fighting any time soon?
That’s an excellent way of explaining it, not only the technique, but the the whole point behind it. Much better than how I have ever described it. I will be borrowing that one.

 1. Yeah he has some skills he needs to settle down a lot and he likes to pose after his shots.

 2. I need to watch the video again. I have been working my footwork a lot. I wish I had a coach who knew jack shit about it and could point some things out. I just try things on my own and pay for it sometimes. However if I am doing what you say then that it is wrong and I know it, that is striking 101.
3. Actually I meant he is going to get his arse handed to him. He jumps in a lot, and falls forwards almost into a lot of his shots. One clean hook or straight shot from a puncher, and he’s going straight to sleep. I agree though, he obviously has some potential, but his coach should have a word with him about his falling in and leaping in, for the safety of the kid.

 4. Have a look at the first couple of minutes of the footage once you start, and see if you agree with me mate. To me, it looked like that’s what you were doing. No harm in going back to practising moving round a medicine ball for a couple of rounds now and again, making sure you’re in and out and side to side with the right technique. I used to do it once or twice a year for a couple of years. Maybe only 5/6 rounds a year, but if it isn’t coming naturally, you’ll feel it.
Ok I looked at it again, I just don’t see what you are talking about. If you could give me a timeline in the video we can discuss it more. I will say my head movement could improve but in my defense when limiting your attacks head movement changes. I felt I was having pretty good success with landing punches just by going thumb up and down and changing slight angles on the punches.

People have also commented on how I am hard to hit. I know I still suck in the grand scheme of things but I am improving a little more everyday. I am really using things I have picke up here in the forum to do it right now.

Thanks for the input. I responded to this on Londons post.

As far as our facility, it is not bad. we recently remodeled it. We really need more room to TBH.

This class is a better one because only serious guys show up for it. We all have different levels of experience but we all are cool with trading shots and learning. I would like to go to other gyms and learn from time to time as well and I have but for whatever reason the martial arts community gets butt hurt when you do this so you have to do it a certain way.

Me fightiing again is something that is creeping in my brain ever so stonger right now. there are a ton of shows coming up and I would like to get a piece. I just haven’t decided if I want to get in that regimen and dedicate the time it would take for me to feel good about really fighting someone in front of a lot of people. I think it will happen this spring or summer for sure though.

No problem.

I watched the first two minutes. Watch at 40s, 1min14s, 1min54s - 2min. Three examples in under 2 minutes of actual sparring time = recurring problem. Especially as these 3 periods are more or less the only time you move to your left. Because you cross your feet here when you move, you aren’t controlling distance at all. You have given control of the crucial element of the fight to your opponent. It also lead at the end of those two minutes to you being crouched flat footed and in a weak position at your opponent’s mercy. In boxing you might have been able to stand up and grab on, avoiding danger. I guess in MMA though a ruthless opponent would probably put his knee through your face. First time I noticed that though, so may be exaggerating how bad that could have been.

Head movement is better than I suggested, so apologies. You are fairly evasive, although I don’t like to see you leaning back on the 1 minute mark. I also personally don’t go in for the flashy footwork you do sometimes (can’t remember the time mark, but you definitely know what I mean!). It looked to me like you got caught with your feet too close together on a couple of occasions when you’d been doing something flash. Again, I wasn’t specifically looking for it, so may be wrong.

I’ll watch the whole thing when I get a minute. I would say though that you’ve improved a lot since you made your ‘fight in 12 weeks thread’. You are a much better stand up striker now. Keep up the good work.

OK I see it. That is kinda of a half ass pivot or adjustment step. Easy enough to correct I guess. I was trying things with my footwork too and that is some of the “flashy” steps you see. I like to use Thursday nights as a time to just try different things. That is a decent representation though. I will focus some more on my steps.

Again thanks for the input.

Cool, glad you see it - it’s a big one for me. As a fighter that always tries to be the one controlling distance, if you were in a ring with me, and I saw you did that even once, I would be pressuring you to move left, keeping you within range, and as soon as you went left, pressing right in on you. I would be trying to time you so you had to move back or eat a clean shot right when your legs were crossed, so you’d either take a big shot or two, earning me some good shots, or I’d score a cheap knockdown by knocking you over (almost pushing you over), without actually hurting you. As you know, standing counts or knockdowns where you slip/aren’t hurt really mess with your rhythm.

Again, you’ve made a lot of good progress in a short period of time. You clearly have talent, and little things like crossing your feet can cause you a lot of problems, which can take a long time for you to identify. I know, I’ve been there myself, and lost fights a minor correction would have seen me win.

3/16/13 Saturday.

Made it to the School finally. Did a workout on the heavy bag.

2 rounds of shadow boxing and “shadow shooting” to work my takedowns. Setting up the takedown with punches etc.

Got on the bag and did some relatively light rounds, rolling combos. No gloves wraps or anything. 2 x 2min

Wrapped up gloved up put on Bas Rutten Muay Thai and did five rounds with power adding a round kick to the end of each combo. 5 x 2 min.

Decided I need to work on my Jab from both stances and work on getting it back to my face. I only did two rounds on each arm… My shoulders were on fire for some reason I could not burn past it.

Started working on my Kicks and did a ton of kicks low med high varying the power. I did them until my shins could not take anymore and decided to call it a day. Everyone else was leaving and wanted to close up. I got there late so i rolled out as well.

3/17/13 Sunday

Had some time in the morning so I got on the weights. Decided to do whole body workout using medium weights with higher reps as opposed to doing 5/3/1 because I have not been able to follow the program right lately.
All exercises were 3 sets of 10reps

over head press 75lbs
Deadlifts 165
Bench Press 135
Squats 150

Also threw in some sit ups scissor kicks etc. I am sore today…

Felt good to lift.

Working late shift this week. makes it impossible to find time to train or lift. So much going on in life too.

I did manage to hit the weights again on Thursday the 20th. Went back over a whole body workout again with light weights simiilar to Sunday. I will be training again on Saturday and back on regular schedule again.

2/24/13

5/3/1 back on the grind and staying on it for a long time this time.

Overhead press day. Final set of main lift 100lbs and 10 reps. That is one more than the last go round.

Finished up with 5 sets 10 reps @ 65 lbs. Substituted dumbell curls for chin ups because mirror muscles are important too!

Ran on the eliptical for about 1.5 miles and had to get out the door for an appointment.

2/25/13

Only one guy showed up for Krav…LOL I don’t know what the hell is going on with these Krav fags but something is def. up. Honestly I don’t care other than it is a huge inconvenience to plan a class and use my time and only one guy shows up. Fake ass wannabee fuckers.

OK since nobody was there I helped the one guy for an hour just doing combos on thai pads and did the side kick drills as well as showed the defense for an attacker with a stick.

The rest of the night was mine and we have guys doing fights so did some sparring and worked with one guy on takedowns defenses etc. from being backed on the cage. Basically taking him down from a single leg, he defends the takedowns as long as possible and then fight on the ground until somebody makes it back standing or gets submission or overwhelmed by strikes. Rinse and Repeat about 50 times. After that grabbed my Krav guy and two others and started working on sprawl drills. Posting the head, taking the back or moving to sidemount using wrestling jiu jitsu to get position and GNP or submit.

Shortly after that started regular NoGi class and worked on a series from half guard to side mount to mount to crucifix and various submissions from those positions. Working on flowing from one postiion to the other and where to go if one fails. Really good class. Came home tired with skin missing on my knees, and one elbow and a few bruises here and there.

Man I’ve had 4 fights fall through in the last 3 months. Ridiculous. Hoping for something in May or June, but I’m not gonna hold my breath. I’ll be at V3 though, we’ve got at least 2 and hopefully a third on the card.
