Ranzo Training log

Ranzo,

I have some ideas on most of that if you are soliciting feedback.

Is that outline Warm up and then ONE of the below, or Warm Up and Then ALL of the below?

Regards,

Robert A

EDTA: I have to run so that was short.

That was ALL of the below.

Holy hell.

That is a tall order for a one hour class. I think picking two of those (including warm up/shadow boxing) for a class is more workable. This goes double if you have beginners/walk ins/rolling enrollment.

With a one hour window there is not a lot of time to spend on anything.

I would consider having a standing “warm yourselves up before class” policy and then only spend a max of 10 minutes on “warm up”/make sure no one is so stiff they snap something. For the warm up I would lean on basic floor work and then whatever fundamental movements/moves can be drilled solo given your floor space.

I would not lead with “conditioning”, especially if you are dealing with beginners. No one learns new things while they are sucking wind. So if you are dropping their balls into their socks at the beginning than the retard will get exagerated later.

Shadow boxing/conditioning is great, but I would end with it.

I really prefer an hour and a half or two hour block, but given a one hour slot I might go with something like this.

Minutes 1-10: Bow in and warm up (Push ups, squats, crunches, any fundamental movements you can work. Grappling would be things like hip heist, bridge, etc. Basic footwork for standing. I personally like “squat thrusts”/“bends and mother fuckers”/“burpees” done with a push up and the steps being counted in japanese. Japanese sounds way better when you are panting and grunting. Direction “if you can’t do the push up, you will push the floor in time with the class!”)

Minutes 11-30: Technique/Skill Work. Combatives/self defense scenario with minimal padding/gear or striking combo or counter or whatever. With only 20 minutes you cannot fix everything. Budget a stop or two where you can address the whole class about the common mistakes. Otherwise simple corrections.

Minutes 31-35: Break, ok this will usually consist of “Get your gear”/“wrap your hands” if you have them using them.

Minutes 36-55: Up intensity drills. Padwork. Scenario Training. FOF/sparring/grappling if practiced. Now is the time to make everyone tired. Agression. Hit hard. Send them into the locker room tired. Alternately, you can have them shadow box for 20 minutes straight, either free form or with you leading/demoing a combo or sequence and then doing group drills. I think TEACHING the class to be able to shadow box is important, with the instructions that they should be doing it on their own.

Minutes 56-60: Bow out/closing. Dawns on me that you probably don’t bow. Or where gi’s. That’s too bad. Seriously, 5 minutes for whatever formalities are associated with your system/gym/class. I like a brief “Any questions?” here. Sometimes it will be about something worked that day. Other times it will be about something else. At least a couple times a student will have a misconception that will melt your brain/make you wonder if the student shouldn’t be allowed to vote or if you are so bad at teaching you should be thrown in jail. Those are the fun ones. I always closed with with “Thank you for being a part of something that is such a big part of my life.”, but I am one of those goofy TMA types. Or at least I though I was. 'Till I started finding out what most of the other folks who self ID’d that way were doing.

Hope that is coherrent. It is 11:26 and I am enjoying some bourbon. Hell, I don’t know if any of that is what you were looking for.

If there is anything I can help with let me know.

Regards,

Robert A

Thanks for the insight. I think you have a great format there. I am not spending too much time on a warmup, and in my mind when laying out a class it seems to work well in blocks like you have described. I seem to get bogged down with coming up with ways to drill the exercises and then actually making that work in the mats.

I have been giving it some thought and I think maybe I am just trying to do to many things in one class. I am going to condense things a bit and give it more focus.

Excited for tonight, I am training with John Renken for the second time. I don’t know if any of you guys have had the pleasure but the last time I worked with him I considered giving up my job and just follow him around and train. He really opened my eyes to a lot of things and I am sure this time will be no different.

Meant to attach this to the other post. Anyway

Training went pretty decent. Had not seen John in over a year, it is always nice to talk and train with him. For those of you who don’t know, he fought in the old UFC and Vale Tudo as well as other organizations. He is currently working with the military as a Combatives instructor as well as FBI etc… He has some great insight from real life situations for a self defense, leo type perspective as well as lots of MMA based stuff.

We covered a lot of Judo throws and things that work from the clinch. Mostly in a Gi but I did spend some time doing variations for nogi.

We also covered some knife and gun defenses…very eye opening and useful. We actually pulled my carry weapon and cleared it to add some realism. It is amazing how people change when they have a real gun pointed at them vs a fake one. Also a real knife really makes you think about WTF you have been training.

After all that I ended up rolling with one of our brown belts and go some good coaching from John on that. Like I said I would love to latch on to John Renken for about sox months, I would be a bad mother fucker for sure.

X2 on this, Damn straight it changes things and hopefully woke some rookies up. Like you, I wish I could spend a year training with an instructor of his caliber.

I think this also gave me some direction in my teachings. Fuck whatever other schools are doing. I am simply going to teach a technique and then make them do it for real.

Last night I covered about 4 choke defenses, very easy to get a grasp on and we did them back and forth. Then I made each student close their eyes and somebody would randomly choke the shit out of them and they had to do the defense. sometimes I would come up and shove the hell out of them and then start choking them…was a fun night for sure.

Back on 5/3/1

Squats today.

final set 165lbs x 10 reps. low weight.

I dropped back on my weights a bit since I have not been lifting for a while and I don’t want to overdo anything Looking at some long term goals here.

Things getting settled in?

Update, or I will post a video that I find amusing.

Regards,

Robert A

go ahead, I want to see the video…

Really, I have not been getting the training I need, and with my schedule I have had to get someone to cover my classes as well a couple times. Royce Gracie was here Saturday and I never even saw him.

I did teach last night and things are coming together much better now. I will post more later when I get going solid again

I’m sorry to hear that. Life can do that to you. I hope things get sorted a little better.

I am laughing so damn hard right now. That was totally awesome and retarded at the same time

Ok I have been slacking on this log. I know everyone is heartbroken that my awesome life has not been being portrayed in this thread lately. So with that in mind I am going to start posting again. I had every intention of doing it today but I don’t have my data from lifting and the training is just pretty damn normal right now. We have had some people move in and out of the school and the fight team is pretty much a bust at the moment.

Stay tuned for tomorrow when I can post up some super exciting stuff.

OK I lied.

I will start back with my workout last night. Week 3 of 5/3/1

Overhead Press

85x5
100x3
110x8

Dips 3 sets 12
pull ups 3 sets of 10. I have to do underhand grip because my right shoulder and Lats hurt like crazy when I do otherwise.

I just got a hanging heavy bag in my garage, finally. So I have been doing some light work on the bag just keeping my form and footwork in good order. I use it as a warm up as well before I lift.

You may want to go ahead and do the next workout in your 5/3/1 rotation. Be careful though. Overtraining is worse than undertraining.

Just kidding around. Hope things are settling in well.

More seriously. Egg Nog. Add rum or bourbon. Not vodka. Buy or make some and spend the rest of day laughing at all of the poor, sad, nogless bastards going through life without it.

Robert A

Well something has to change in my life. Im working two jobs and teaching two nights a week when im not on the late shift of my normal job. Can’t seem to make enough money.

I am still training when I can and lifting when I can. Everything is very sporadic for me right now. I would love to put some more in this log but for now I’m just gonna let it ride. I will be back for sure. Im hoping 2014 gets better, not that this past year was so bad because it wasn’t but I need progress.

I wish you a good 2014 with lots of training!

Ok guys, I have came to a point in life where I need to make some decisions. The place where I train has really changed, most of the guys who were fighting have left and went to other gyms and or are back to eating hot dogs and chasing tail. Also I am working 2 jobs so I can afford to have a decent life.

Actually took in some side jobs wrenching on cars again too and I have let my sister “borrow” all my weights that were in the Garage because I need the space and I just can’t make time to lift right now.

so with all that going on I still teach two nights a week at the school and the Krav classes have dwindled since the school changed locations. I have been using that time to teach guys what I want to teach with a MMA type base which is where we were heading anyway.

there is more money in MMA right now and we got the new location, bigger etc. and set up the Cage inside to train in. Now the classes for MMA are just small and nobody commits to training. I end up going to school and either have the most beginner newb or somebody who will just never be able to “get it” and I spend hours teaching the same old stuff or whatever and I don’;t have a partner to work with and my cardio and skills are just getting worse.

Started doing Jiu Jitsu more but I just can’t learn in a “regular” class environment and god forbid if I get a know it all let me show you this move, ah you should do it like this partner. Also no matter what I always feel the need to do Muay Thai or kickboxing, I love it that is what I do best or what I like to do best. Also the Owner sold the cage and is putting regular mats down in its place and probably will put some bags over there as well.

Now that is kind of the problems but I have a few really good friends who I have been training with for years and also I am in a really good situation money wise at this school. I have a key and I come and go as I please. Many times I do privates or have workouts/sparring on Sunday Afternoons there although lately everyone is too busy, including myself for two weeks now. So I don’t know if this is just a low point and I should hang on for better days or should I just go somewhere else.

I really don’t plan on fighting competitively anymore and I just turned down a fight in March mostly because it was at 170lbs and I am just not going there anymore. However I still want to train for real and not some faggot ass bullshit like most people do in the gym. I love the feeling when I am in shape and my fighting is on point and I am just really not getting it right now.

Now as gay as this is gonna sound, I have been tempted to go down the the UFC gym and check out the classes. I feel like I could go there and just train and go home. There are fighters who train there and I could spar with them, but I am sure there are a bunch of faggots in there as well.

somebody please push me in a direction here
