Rant: Looking Like a Bodybuilder

We are awesome aren’t we? Okay, well I am anyway.

I have yet to have anyone say anything negative to me about lifting. My family thinks its cool that I’m so passionate and focused about it.

In fact my mom and her 80 year old boyfriend were over Saturday night I and was showing them some squat videos from recent training and Joe thought it was the coolest thing. He wanted to see all my gear. Every time I see him he tells me how great I look.

The negative side is that on two separate occasions I had young men comment on my arm veins in an envious way during training. I think the comment was “wow, I want my veins to look like that.” I’m still wondering when they changed from wanting me to wanting to look like me.

Luckily, I’m in the military so other mil folks who do the minimum to barely pass our very easy PT test realize to keep their pieholes shut. After all, the avg American expects folks in the military to be physically fit and they know they’re not living up to it.

When I have been confronted by overly nosy folks who aren’t dedicated and are trying desperately to bring me down to that level I have found that “I’m sorry, it takes me 24 hours every day just to keep my nose in my own f*cking business” works wonders in shutting up the average fatbody. That or “aren’t you a bit fat to be talking to me about that?”

I’m sure I sound like Charles Manson Jr. but I’ve just listened to enough crap over the years and I’m not a big guy. I’m 6’ and 222 lbs, would look a lot better if I was 210. Definitely nothing special.

Oh,Miss O, I seriously doubt they’ve stopped wanting you. Now they just want you and want to look like you!

So it’s OK for a woman to have a little muscle, but not a lot of muscle? Where do you draw the line?

Ha, beat me to it. I’m sure the guys would jump at the chance. I know I would.

I think there is a common thread here that all of seem to have gone through:

1 - Get really into lifting
2 - Try and share this with other people
3 - Realize other people are mostly negative about it
4 - Stick mainly to yourself about it(going so far as to cover up and make sure you dont draw attention) except for a few people who are cool about it.

Too bad. This seems to be the only hobby that this happens in. The guitar playing example above was PERFECT. Basically any hobby in which there is improvement can be compared to it, ours is looked down upon for some reason though. Nobody feels bad about themselves when they see someone finish a ship in a bottle I guess…

Thank you both for providing excellent examples to prove my point.

You also said that you must be insecure to build impressive amounts of muscle mass. WTF are you doing on a bodybuilding site? Seriously…

Every time I see retarded shit like this I always wonder why the fuck these people are on this forum…it just doesn’t make any sense to me. Like I couldn’t give a shit about learning how to be the best MMA fighter on the planet but I wouldn’t join a MMA forum and then talk about how they must all be sooo insecure to need to learn how to fight MMA so well.

Oh boy. I’m insecure because I’m laughing at his funny response to your whiny post? I also have to ask what you are doing on this site where we are all striving for above average results and you are pointing calling people insecure at the drop of a hat?

Honestly the people throwing in negative remarks are the one’s that either lack discipline to maintain this lifestyle (eating, training, etc) or have tried and failed because they do not have the will power. This sport is probably one of the hardest out there an I have competed in a wide variety of sports. Eating 6-7 times a day, planning each meal to the macros, training your ass off for 2 hours a day the ?average joe? is not cut out for that lifestyle thus, their need to be-little the ones that are.

He draws the line at women with bigger “gunz” than him. Which pretty much means all women.

A lot of these “unattractive” women that people refer to look absolutely fantastic (to me) in their off season. I’d really like to see one straight guy say no to them. It’s like they think some of these women walk around in contest shape or something.

I added a pic for no particular reason other than I find the focal point (the woman) pretty hot.

I think the issue also alludes to the lack of effort and work integrity in our society today. “Where you’re at right now is fine” implies that you’ve already worked hard enough for what you have, and that now you should just relax. These are the people that will never understand what personal betterment really is - The same ones who rely on New Year’s Resolutions to do the work for them.
I get this a lot. “Relax, you look great!” When my food choices are an issue, it’s “You can afford to eat it! I’m the one who shouldn’t be!”

Maybe I’m naive, but I think people are generally just trying to be kind. I usually answer any kind of workout or body remark with some variation of that I love doing it or that it relaxes me, both of which are true. People always respond well. But of course, I don’t have to worry about extreme muscularity.

Something I’ve noticed, though, is that I get similar remarks in other contexts. The “slow down, you’re fine, relax, it can wait” stuff. I seem to have a lot of energy. I need to use it, I would go crazy if I didn’t. It’s hard to imagine living otherwise than I do. I know that when I miss more than a couple of workouts I feel physically and mentally off. I often wonder how people who don’t stay in shape manage. But then, I wonder what people who don’t read think about, and I wonder how self-centered people stand the shallowness of their relationships. I don’t understand a life that’s made up of television shows and boredom and foolish and ineffectual stabs at dieting as a surrogate for good health.

But happily, I don’t have to. I get to live the way I want. I agree with the people who’ve said having a mate who understands is good. I love that about my husband. He gets it.

yet, another reason I’m glad I work in a gym. People expect you to eat well and be big.

Though it’s funny I wait for comments from gym members when I’m walking by them carrying a burger

I know I don’t post much. (Too much time to “hunt & Peck” the keys) This is something that happened the other day that just gets under my skin and I have to vent.

I'll be reading T-Nation and someone (co-workers usually) will look over my shoulder at a pic of a bodybuilder in the article and say "Oh now that's gross, I dont' find that appealing at all. Is that what you want to look like?!"

My thought is so what if I do? It's none of their concern. And what do they think? I'm just going to stroll in the next day looking like that? Do they actually think that my going to the gym, taking protein, creatine and some fish oil is going to produce those results? Whos else has heard this line before?
My friends usually give me shit when they see the Powerful Images pictures. I then show them the picture of Aylen Alvarez in those tight jeans, and they forget what the fuck they were talking about.
