Not all handicaps need it on their license plate. It can be hung from the rearview mirror. I think if the guy removed the confederate flag from his window we might be able to see it. This guy has taken it a bit far, but it is his first amendment right.

Ok. So, lets say this guy drives this truck, and a few muslims see it, and decide it would look better gently altered with a few baseball bats, and, for good measure, so would his head.
Would you say that those muslims should get a stricter sentence than they would had they simply randomly attacked someones car/person? How would you see the art on the back of his truck affecting the situation?
What’s the problem? I see some vandalism and assault charges for sure, possibly murder. If it was murder, than the idiot brought it on himself. I don’t see why the muslims would get a stricter sentence.
I don’t see why they should get a more lenient one, either, though (I know that wasn’t your point). If it’s worth a jail sentence to teach the idiot a lesson, go for it. If not, just write him of as an idiot and go on about your business.
I do it every day.

If I were to assume you were white, christian, and straight, how far off would I be?
This isn’t an attack. The point of asking is that, for members of those groups, it’s easy to write off people who offend you and go on about your business. For other groups, not so much.
As to the hypothetical I suggested, I’d say the truck was a mitigating factor.

Definately not the people who enslaved them/conquered their land/stole all their natural resources.
1st, I would have to verify this, but I would venture to guess that no person from that time who did any of those things is alive.
2, generally each race has done that to themselves more than any external race. Logically concluding that they should be more mad at their own race for their troubles.
3rd, if these innocent magnificent people didn’t claim ownership, than things cannot be stolen.
1st, what does it matter? Do you think that the theft of land had no lasting impact on the Mexicans/Indians. Do you think that slavery, never mind the golden years that followed it, is just water under the bridge to the blacks?
2nd Not really true.
3rd Exactly right. So a bunch of white people came over and said they owned the place. What’s your point?
When a race is born into significantly worse conditions than another, they will not be happy. When they realise that this is mainly due to the actions of another race they will be displeased with the people in question.
Now whose being racist. “So a bunch of white people came over and said they owned the place” If my schooling served me right they were European. You are trying to call out “white people” for being racist while being racist yourself. Get over it. It is a part of American culture people are always going to have their opinions black, white, brown, whatever.

Well, you could tell the answer to two of those by looking in my profile. And yes, I’m Christian.
I was raised to be tolerant of other people and their cultures. I’m sure the guy that owns the truck is a white straight male ‘Christian’ as well. He, apparently, wasn’t raised to be tolerant. There’s the difference.
As far as the truck is concerned, maybe 9/11 is a mitigating factor? And then when you ask the terrorists, they’ll come up with a mitigating factor as well.
So the excuses (mitigating factors) go on and on down the line.

Free speech has been punished.
I would defend the right of this person to paint whatever he wanted on his truck. But no one (including the state) raised an issue with that as far as the article says. The only thing the state did was make him change his state-issued licence plate.
The state has a right to do this because the license plate is technically owned by the state. And the state gets to determine what it wants it’s own property to say.
In short, this is melodrama.

There are many different ethnicities who practice Islam, which is a faith not a race, therefore I don’t see how this is “racist”. It is ignorant however.

So is it merely “hateful”? What is it, other than ignorant? People who proudly display neo-nazi crap (license-plate) would probably call themselves racist, their aryan race is superior to others, according to them.
WHat I’m trying to get at, is this: should there be a punishment for decorating your vehicle with offensive (but legal) stuff - and if so, what should the punishment be?

There should not be a punishment. People are allowed to have evil thoughts and express evil views. If you make evil thoughts illegal, then you need thought police. And you also have to decide what constitutes evil.
Policing thought is essentially impossible, and if/wher possible, the act itself is evil. It’s a conundrum.
And no one wants their congressmen to be deciding what constitutes evil. The people you put in jail would change with every election.
Finally, aside from the impracticality of it, another good reason to allow people to express evil thoughts is because if you make that illegal it does nothing to reduce the thoughts. It just hides them from everyone so they can fester. It would be like inventing a cure for cancer, except that it doesn’t really cure anything, but instead it just hides the symptoms until you die.
