Na-R-ALA and some dextrose 30’ before Workout works pretty well for me.
No hypo whatsoever.

EDIT: 100mg of Na-R-ALA and 20-30 grams of dextrose dissolved in Green (Caffeinated) Tea 30’ before weightlifting.
Nice energy and focus.
Without the Na-R-ALA I ‘crash’ during workout (despite sipping electrolytes and BCAAs between sets).

Guy in a supplement store told me it’s beneficial to take this stuff with creatine. He claimed it improved creatine absorbancy?
This is taken from Mountain Dog Diet website per John Meadows:
Cliff Notes: The vitamin store guy may have been right.

then why do they recommend to take Receptormax before lifting, if it has R-ALA in it?
I was going to ask same thing. I used to get a little hypo when doing it but eventually got used to it and don;t have any more problems with it before a workout.
yeah there’s some evidence that it improves creatine absorbance.
Also I’ve taken 600mg R-ALA preworkout and never got shaky or light headed from it?

me neither. I’ve taken 500mg of R-ALA before some workouts, which is a decent amount, and felt fine. BUT, keep in mind, I have 60-100g of carbs in my peri-workout window.
Anyways, the fact that R-ALA helps creatine absorption still makes me want to take it pre-workout since I use ANACONDA during my workout. And I figure I take enough carbs pre-and-during my workout to ensure that at least SOME glucose is in my bloodstream.
aside from antioxidant benefits, would there be any reason to take ALA pre workout while NOT having carbs?
i do the Anabolic Diet so yeah… just some stims and BCAA pre/intra workout

probably not… try that ALCAR though! from some Poliquin article…
Being the ester form of carnitine, acetyl-L-carnitine readily crosses the blood-brain barrier. Nutrition researchers believe that ALC improves cognition by enhancing the activity of acetylcholine and/or increasing neuronal metabolism. There is a good chance that ALC might increase dopamine activity in the part of the brain where dopamine is produced and it has been documented in the literature that ALC enhances cerebro-vascular and cardio-vascular blood flow, which will potentiate any other pre-workout nutraceuticals that I usually recommend.
A further added benefit of acetyl-l-carnitine, is that like the branched chain amino acids, it will prevent the decrease of plasma testosterone associated with high training loads, and will likely have a positive effect on your endogenous testosterone.
This product is particularly useful for people who when exposed to long term stress show signs of low morning cortisol, such as early morning and difficulty waking up. A great thing about ALC is that it has an amphoteric effect on cortisol levels, raising or lowering levels depending on feedback mechanisms. If it is too low and, it will bring cortisol up. If it is too high, it will bring it down.
From an observational standpoint, I have noticed increased strength performance in athletes who take a high dose of ALC prior to workouts. Athletes report being more awake and focused. I would recommend you use 3 grams of acetyl-l-carnitine on an empty stomach upon arising in the morning before you have breakfast. Anything less than that is not worth it. It seems that the more the better. I have used as much as seven grams with remarkable results.

you had me at raising/lowering cortisol - which i believe is the cause of my thyroid issues
thank you for that. i knew most the other benefits of ALCAR but never heard that one

Yes, try ALCAR and let me know how you get on. Hopefully it won’t make you fall asleep on the motorway at 11am on a saturday morning, like it did with me ![]()

it made you sleepy? weird man. I never felt a thing, even taking 3g of that shit in the morning on an empty stomach.

It gave me a decent buzz for about 30’, then my blood sugar would crash bigtime.
I almost had an accident while driving.
Like with R-ALA, I need to take ALCAR with carbs
(though R-ALA gives me a better ‘buzz’, and regulates my blood sugar much better)
@ BBB
will do. should be delivered within 48 hours.
could it be due to relying on a carb based diet?
IIRC, PB goes lower with carbs and a guy from another board doing the AD said that never happens to him… could be coincidence though
I take 1g ALCAR with my coffee when I wake up and don’t eat for 6 hours and I’m fine.
@ BBB or anyone else…
I need to take a saliva cortisol test (4x in one day)
should i hold off on taking my ALCAR in advance or just stop taking it like a day or so before i test?
just not really sure if/how i will end up skewing the results…
thanks
just took my first dose 30 mins ago. 1500mg
feel much more focused. no grogginess considering i felt shitty this morning from getting wayyyy too wasted last night.
i think im gonna try 3000mg pre workout (poliquin recommendation)on monday and see how that goes.

hah, I just ordered Yang R-ALA from Poliquin since Receptormax has been out of order for some time now…
