Question Regarding Supplements

Is that characteristic unique to fish oil or does perhaps olive oil have the same effect? Thanks for the reply.[/quote]

No, only omega-3 fatty acids

Where does one purchase glycerol?

pretty much any pharmacy!

Pretty much any pharmacy!

Coach, I was reading Dr. Berardi’s article on fructose ( Strength Training, Bodybuilding & Online Supplement Store - T NATION ) and he was describing glycerol (from fructose breakdown) increasing the formation of fat. Would supplementation as you were talking about a few posts earlier carry the same risk of increasing fat formation, or is it negligible with the amount being used? Thanks!

Hey Coach,
What’s your latest thoughts on Coconut Oil? And is it good for preserving lean muscle and promoting fat loss,as I have read in some articles?

Also,a theoretical question a bit out of left field-Given that getting,say,8 portions of fruit and veg a day is not always easy, and that storage and waste is also an issue, and nutrient content is so variable anyway,if I took this combo every day-

-A quality 2-a-day multivitamin (Poliquin Performance or Solgar, for insatance)
-A bioflavonoid and probiotic high-potency pill
-A fibre supplement (i.e. Fybogel)
-A good scoop or two of Superfood
-A can of V8 Vegetable juice,or a scoop of greens
-One metric shit-ton of water
Can I get away with maybe one piece a day (a banana, orange or apple) or even no fruit

Hi Coach,
-What are your thoughts on Apple Cider Vinegar? I’m trying it recently-do you take it? whats it known to do/contain and what is still conjecture?

-I have an underactive thyroid (Hypothyroidism) had it for about 3 years, have regular blood tests-It’s stable now,I’m on prescription for Levothyroxine (A synthetic hormone) but metabolism/energy is still not what it once was,and I am hitting 31 this year.
I have seen thyroid support formulas sold on the net,and also some supplements (especailly Biotest androgen supplements) list insulin and thyroid changes as potential benefits-Would you recommend any to a client with Hypothyroidism? or make any other dietary guidance?

CT,

What is your take on Rhaponticum carthamoides? There appears to be quite a bit of anecdotal evidence in the eastern blcok countries supporting its ability to increase recovery time and promote protein synthesis.

Trust me, with all the supplement companies looking to make a big bang, if a product not marketed widely and with a good reputation was available for marketing, they would have flooded the market with it by now.

We’re not talking about anything new, but something that has been known for a while. If it had been effective many companies would have jumped on it by now. Marketing a supplement already in existence is a great deal for companies since they don’t have to do any R&D.

Coconut will not really help you preserve muscle, but it can help with fat loss since it seems to improve thyroid function.

With all of that, you would be fine even without fruits.

I am not sure of the price differences of using the proposed fruit/vegetable replacement stack vs. real food but…

would you say it would be more beneficial to use a similar stack, then say actually eat 8 portions of fruit and veggies a day given the price of organic produce if one was to try and avoid pesticides? (I just watched The Disappearing Male 20 minutes ago and am quite frightened). What benefits from whole food would be given up by using the stack as a fruit/vegetable replacement besides the thermic effect of eating that many fruits/vegetables?

Pretty interesting question actually. I also would like to know your take CT.

Coach,

On a couple occasions you’ve mentioned that in the Finibars there is Whey hydrolsate and Palatinose, yet when I look at the ingredient list on the product page, neither of these are listed. Am I missing something?

your quotes:

  1. From page 2 of the “questions of para-nutrition workout” thread

“That’s the thing. If you look at the macronutrients ratio there doesn’t seem to be anything special about the bars. The REAL secret is the use of the proper ratio of rice oligodextrin and palatinose.”

2.) From page 2 of the "Questions about Protein/Amino Pulsing thread

“The protocol would be fine, FINiBAR contains whey hydrolysate which is fast absorbed and will create a protein pulse that will get you out of that catabolic state.”

Thanks for your response,
Darian

It was my mistake, it’s whey isolate. Sorry

The thermic effect of feeding would be minimal in this case since the fruits and veggies provide calories/energy. So even if there is a TEF, it doesn’t compensate for the increase in caloric intake.

I still believe that one should ingest fruits and veggies in his diet, even with a very complete protocol such as above. But you can indeed drastically reduce fruit/veggies intake if you follow it.

Hey CT, was hoping to get your input on using something like glycerol before a photoshoot to help increase fullness/vascualrity?

If so, what would be a good dosage/timing protocol?

Thanks for your input.

I’ve used it before… heck, read my article “Shredded in 6 days” for an idea how I use glycerol.

But this year I actually used Workout Fuel and Finibars to load my bodybuilding athletes, however the timing must be just right to avoid water retention.

Thanks, I will check out the article. Would you mind sharing your Workout Fuel/Finibar protocol? What does would you use for a female, around 115 pounds? The shoot is at 3 p.m.

I had a quick questio about caffeine intake. I drink a zero carb energy drink sweetened with sucralose, and containing about 180 grams of caffeine every day. Is this going to lead to any ill effects? I do this out of habit really, it just seems to help break the blandness of my diet throughout the day. Thanks for any help.

Hi Coach, can you tell me the recommended dosage per day for acetyl l-carnitine. i’ve looked around some say 500mg-1gram. I think Poliquin suggested 3-7grams.

I appreciate you advice.
