Question for the computer experts

I am having a hard time opening email file attachments. I recently received Joel Marion’s new articles but was unable to view them (Win98, Outlook Express). The paper clip icon that is normally yellow colored is gray, and when I click the icon the two article attachments are the same and won’t do anything . Could someone please help out an ignorant soul?

Is it all attachments, or just the ones you got this one time? You might not have the program he used to write the articles in. I have problems with this when people are using wordperfect. What is the extension on them (the part after the .)? And if it’s all attachments, you might want to check your virus scanner settings. PM me if you’ve got any more questions.

I’ve been having the same problem ever since I upgraded to the newest version of Outlook Express. I still haven’t found how to fix it, but I found away around it.

If you take the original message with attachments and hit the “forward” button, you will then be able to click on and open or save the documents that were sent to you.

I’m not sure if this is some sort of protection device in Outlook, but it is a pain in the ass, and I’m still trying to find a way to fix it.

You could save the docs onto your desktop, open Word, and use Word to open the docs.

Nate/Patricia: your suggestions worked like a charm. Thanks for the advice!

Mike: It’s not all attachments, but a good portion of them. The extension on both articles is .doc Any suggestions? Anytime someone from my home office sends me attachments I am unable to view them as well. Thanks for your assistance!

This is a Outlook protection system. Basically, it doesn’t allow you to open attachments that could potentially contain a virus. This is easy to turn off. Go to outlook express, go to Tools- Options- Security and uncheck the box that says Do not allow attachements to be saved… This should clear that up.

I’m working on it, I downloaded Outlook Express, seeing what’s goin on with it, haven’t used it in a while, I’ve been using the full version of Outlook for a while, I’ll post if I find out whats going on, although it sounds like Microsoft might’ve done it in the code as a kind of virus prevention step, so people can’t send in macro viruses through word files. But I’m going to mess around with it some, see if I can find anything out for you.

Thanks for all the help everyone!

I need to take a computer class…it’s mindboggling how ignorant I am with this stuff.
