Question for MMA Guys

ART is great treatment for TMJ, by the way. Wife had a wicked case of it. Thought she’d have to wear a mouthguard and live in pain for life. My ART guy fixed her in three sessions.

I’ve been thinking about trying to get into some mma or muay thai. Not really to compete (unless somehow I turn out to be decent at it) but rather just to get some skills.

But, I’m a little apprehensive for reasons that will be explained in my questions.

 1. I have what I think is a double jointed left jaw socket. When I open my mouth as wide as it goes the left side kinda pops out and when I close my mouth it will pop back in. It’s not painful or anything but I’ve always wondered if I would somehow break my jaw much easier because of it if I were to get cracked in the face. Your thoughts?

 2. I’ve never been hit in the face before. I’ve been in fights, but they were more like swing and miss, push you over and kick you kinda fights. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried about taking a shot or shots to the grill. So what’s it like? It obviously wont be pleasant, but any advice you can throw out there would be great.

Thanks guys
well, i hate getting hit in the face…and it can be scary.

i’ve knocked out nearly everyone i’ve fought (or KO’d or TKO’d in the ring), so i know that i don’t wanna get knocked out or drilled in the face.

but, by being trained in martial arts, i’m more confident, because i know to tuck my chin, semi-blade myself in confrontations, and also talk to people like i don’t want to fight, so when we do, they don’t know what the hell happened to them.

like some of the other guys said, get your jaw checked out and give it a whirl. if you don’t like fighting, then you can always quit. just don’t wonder what if?

people asked me a lot why i never went pro as a fighter, and i simply don’t have worldclass reflexes, and my vision wasnt very good at the time (i’ve since had LASIK). i didn’t want to be a decent fighter, i wanted to be the champ, and i accepted my limitations. but still do enjoy training and watching various MMA and kickboxing events…

as far as being a PJ…that shit’s hard. most i know do have Ranger tabs (and Scuba bubbles and HALO wings and all the “scare-badges”)…that stuff’s scary too, to a lot of people. don’t forget where you’ve been and done, and it’ll help put your mind at ease…

My experience with sparring has been painful, yes, but honestly if you’re interested in MMA get ready to accept pain, and lots of it. In my opinion, MMA athletes are some of the, if not the toughest guys on the planet. If you don’t want to experience pain, avoid any and all conflict. I Doubt you’ll get too far in anything with that though.

Get your TMJ checked out before you spar. Check your jaw muscles and see if there’s any adhesions or anything you can solve yourself without paying medical bills first.

Fighting hurts, sparring SHOULD hurt less. You get headaches, black eyes, bruises, whatever. Shit happens. The aim is not getting hit in the face though. And if you want to avoid getting hit, then fight smart. Look into more grappling techniques if you don’t like stand-up. Use your guard, learn to slip punches, etc. Hell, smoke a blunt after training, (BYE BYE HEADACHES! rofl), take a damn tylenol. Whatever.

Pain is temporary. Pride is forever.
Good post, although I can’t relate to the blunt smoking (not knocking it, though).

Sparring to me can be less painful than BJJ, especially if you roll with a guy who’s more experienced than you and is submitting you with ease. First time I moved up in BJJ I rolled with a guy who’d been doing it for 5 years and man, my joints ached for like a week after. Sparring I’ve been dazed and dizzy, but the pain is very temporary.
