question about surfing

Hey guys, new to this forum, but I’ve been training for over 10 years. I live in Hawaii and surf probably 4 times a week for probably around 2 hours a session. There’s a lot of paddling involved so I wanted to get peoples opinion on what type of work this might fall into…i.e. renegade training (ala davies), hiit, cardio, or what? For those that don’t know, surfing works the hell out of your back, especially your traps, rhomboids, rear delts, triceps, and spinal erectors. Just wanted to get some opinions, and possibly caloric expenditures?? Also, could this be substituted for cardio? Any opinions/thoughts much appreciated…

I love surfing, man…but I can’t answer that one…

must…go…to…Hawaii…

Hey Jason, thanks for the reply at least, here’s a pic to hold you over until you come out here, nothing professional quality, but you get the idea, blue warm water, sunny skies, good waves…aahhhhh…

Anyone else have thoughts?

did you read my book on Xtreme sports? There are a variety of concerns and I’ll be happy to discuss with you.

No, I didn’t, thanks so much for the reply coach davies. I was just more wondering about the caloric expenditure and heart rate. Of course, when it’s 8-10 hawaiian I have no problem maintaining a high heart rate! What did you mean by “concerns”?

seriously, unless you know what it’s like to charge overhead you have no idea.

There are a variety of concerns from the very repetitive nature of paddling, the punishment you naturally take and the unique leg and torso drive and decompression ability needed to snap off turns and the like.

Send me an im or email when you can and we can discuss more. Maybe I’ll see you out sometime.

Coach Davies
