Hello. I have a question that would probably be seen as ‘stupid’ by most people on here, but it has been bothering me for a while.
I look at nutrient labels for various things, specifically under carbohydrates.
For example, on a can of soda it says…
Total Carbs- 41 g
Sugars- 41 g
If I look at a bag of sun chips…
Total Carbs 19g
Sugars 2 g
Dietary Fiber 2 g
Now, in the soda, all of the 41g of carbs is sugar, which is bad (right?). But under sun chips, only 2 g of the total carbs is sugar. 2 more grams is fiber, but what exactly accounts for the other 15 grams of carbs?
So my question is, when a label lists 2 grams of the total carbohydrate is sugar, what are the remaining carbohydrates categorized as? And are these remaining uncategorized carbohydrates good or bad?
Thanks for the help.
The remaining carbs are starches.
I wouldn’t look at carbs as either good or bad. Certainly, soda and sun chips shouldn’t be in your diet if your goal is body composition anyway. As a very gereral answer to your question, starches are not as “bad” as sugars.
As elusive said, starches most likely.
There is also a possibility that they are sugar alcohols (Sugars which are partially absorbed, thus less calories and less blood sugar raising, dependent on the type)
Just throwing out that possibility, if it is a ‘starchy’ food, it is most likely starch. If it is a protein bar or a ‘health conscious’ product, possible that they are sugar alcohols.
Sugar alcohols also give you the shits in high doses, so you should know what the unlisted carbs are after consumption

Ahh yes. Sugar alcohols. I wasn’t thinking about those, because he mentioned chips. As mentioned they can give you the shits.
Sorry for what is prob a really dumb question but if the label says “of which sugars 60g” is this the same as sitting down and eating 60g of sugar from a bag? I ask because I am looking at a recovery supplement which has the above written on it.

“Of which sugars 60g”, aside from being pretty butchered english (or horribly out of context), means that 60g of them are sugars.
This is chemically speaking, as eating sugar out of a bag usually insinuates ‘sucrose’, check the product label to see what the sugars in the recovery supplement are.
But yes, there are 60g of said sugars.
Its maltodextrin and dextrose. I am just slightly concerned about the amount of “sugars”, are there any health worries? Thanks for the help

Given how this is a recovery drink, I do not think you need to worry about anything at all; health or body composition wise.

tooth decay would be something to consider. Be sure to brush soon after, or at least rinse your mouth

As long as you have that sugary drink preworkout and not post, you’re good. Whether or not 60g is too much or too little, no here knows, but you.

I’ve never really looked in that. Assuming one sugary drink a day and brushing my teeth like a normal person, is it really a concern given how it doesn’t stay in the mouth long? Or is this precautionary?
ya thats the plan after reading all the info on here about peri workout nutrition. Thanks for the help all
