Question about Massive Eating by John Berardi

I’ve done some reading on the “Massive Eating” by John Berardi, and I had a question. Mainly, how the hell am I suppose to 4,536 calories a day?? I completly agree with his writings, but that is a lot of food and I was wondering if anybody eats that much and how do they go about eating so many calories? I figure that I would have to eat about 6 times a day, but what should I eat? Keeping in mind that Mon - Fri I work 9 - 5ish in an office.

I am starting this plan monday. Check out my food log @

my goal is 4347 calories

Yes, you have to eat 6 times a day. (Actually, I found that eating 8 times was easier when I was bulking.) If you’re at work, drink a few of your meals. AP plus peanut butter, etc. is a good way to get in enough cals without having the boss jump on you.

Don’t want to eat that often? Then you should find another sport. Sorry, but them’s the facts.

Jay: J.B. points out a few sample diets that can give you a starting framework. I can’t recall the exact articles, but a search from the Home Page should point you in the right direction.

Personally,I have to stay at, or near, “Massive Eating/Don’t Diet” levels because of my tendency to put on fat. You need to be careful and watch your bodies response to the caloric levels recommended.

By the way…make “Tupperware”, “Rubbermaid” and any brand of Soft Coolers your best friends!

No offense, but quit whining. Try working from 5:00-6:00 or 7:00 at night 5 or 6 days a week. Suck it up and do it. As to how to eat that many calories, it’s quite simple. Prepare your food, open your mouth, put it in, chew, and swallow. Nobody’s gonna do it for you. There are no shortcuts either.

Listen, I’ve worked plenty of 12 & 14 hour shifts and I wasn’t wining. I was simply asking what types of food are good to eat in order to fulfill large calorie requirements.

What types of foods do you eat to help you reach your calorie requirements? Eating enough protein isn’t a problem. I take EAS Myoplex, drink lots of milk, eat tuna, boiled chicken etc. It’s the rest of the calories. Should I try some protein bars like EAS Myoplex bars and bring some fruit to work? Just curious. Thanks for your help.

JayNick, I’ve read a lot of your posts on this board as of late, and it’s quite easy to tell that you have A LOT to learn about basic things. I’m not trying to insult you or talk down to you. Just try to read as much as you can before you ask questions. Much of what you’re asking has been answered repeatedly both in the mag and in the forum. Specifically for this question, John Berardi has provided sample meals many times with his articles. Get a small cooler and take food to work with you. Find the article called “Shake It Up” and make a shake or two that fit your eating profile and the moment and bring that with you. I’m sorry if my previous post came off wrong. Good luck with your diet.

You should read some of my posts. I break down how I eat 4000-5000 calories a day. Chicken, tuna, noodles, rice, yogurt, milk, eggs, cheese, almonds, peanuts, peanut butter. I eat 5-6 times a day, and snack occasionally. One reason you eat more frequently is because it makes it easier, plus there are absorbability issues. Basically, the rule is eat when you are hungry. I said eat, don’t bullshit around. A sample breakfast is 4 jumbo eggs, 1-2 glasses of milk,2-3 pieces of toast, or 2tortillas, cheese on eggs, butter, 2-3 pieces of sausage, or bacon. If you eat 6 times daily, you need 750 cals. per feeding. Do your research and find out the nutrition breakdown on the foods mentioned before, and make a menu, shopping list, and prepare your food ahead of time. You will begin to adjust, and know what you are doing. If you get up early, then it makes it easier. You will also have to up your water intake, so you will probably be pissing in the middle of the night or waking up hungry. Eat when this happens. I will throw down a glass of milk, 1/2 cup of almonds, and 1-2 string cheeses. The rest is up to you. Remember: It is not a diet, it is a way of life. Focus on the prize, not the price!

I know what you’re saying about eating so much. One thing that hasn’t been mentioned, probably because it seems like common sense, is that you’ll get used to eating so much so often. The first week or two you’ll be bloated and wont feel like eating - not to mention the HUGE craps you’ll take
However, after that you’ll find that you’ll start to get hungry inbetween meals and start wishing the clock along so that you can eat again!
Then it’s time to diet again and then you’ll be asking us on the board, “how can you people eat only 3500 cal/day?! I feel as if I’m going to starve!”
Well, there ya go.

protein shakes and a lot of peanuts. laters pk

I think the amount of calories suggested for massive eating are just way to high. They are definitely way to high for the don’t diet part. I tried the calorie recomendations for don’t diet and started gaining muscle instead of losing bodyfat.
