Qualifying for Arnold?

I have looked at the site on qualifications for the Arnold PLing meets and I’m a bit confused. I have been into training for a bit over 2.5 years now and am just getting serious about entering some actual sanctioned meets. It’s my goal/dream to someday compete in the Arnold PLing meet. Can anyone help explain how to meet these criterions? My last meet earned me a Wilks total of 388, and only a 375 is required for the Arnold. Not sure if this means much, but it’s a start.

BW = 203 lb = 92.27 kg
Squat = 435
Bench = 335 (barely missed 365)
Deadlift = 585
Total = 1,355 lb = 616 kg

Wilks Total = 388

Any tips on what I need to do to get further on the road to the Arnold would be much appreciated (other than the fact that I need to get stronger overall, obviously).

Qualifying rules are likely to change next year as the USAPL will no longer be the federation for the Arnold.

I don’t believe that this is true. My understanding is that there will be USAPL as well as the XPC. USAPL will handle raw/single ply where as the XPC is the multiple ply division.

I can’t speak about the USAPL, but I’ll be able to comment about the XPC if anybody is interested.

Hmm a few guys in my crew were at the XPC meet in Lexington this weekend and they were all under the impression that the USAPL would not be involved next year.

The XPC meet was in Columbus, OH this past weekend :slight_smile:

I could be wrong. I train at Lexen and talk to Danny 3-4 times per week, I remember him saying that raw, single ply and multiply would all be represented there. Also, the XPC is multiply only, with no raw or single ply divisions. This conversation happened a few months ago, so maybe something has changed since then.

Got my places mixed up :stuck_out_tongue:

Could be changed, might not be who knows, guys I lift with all seemed to think so but until there’s something up on the Arnold site I doubt anything is truly set in stone. Personally I’m fine with USAPL sticking around even though I’ve gotten partial to a mono. I’ll be there competing though regardless of the federation.

So do you guys have any advice on what I need to do to get closer to this goal? There isn’t much action going on in Kansas with PLing, but I’m fine with making a road trip somewhere. Does this mean I need to look up a nearby USAPL meet and just start competing?

I think that would be your best bet ashy. Your training has been going well so I dont think you should really change anything in that aspect. Just start getting to comps. As of now your only comps have been through your strength club correct? You should probably start hitting some sanctioned meets to get any jitters out of the way.

Definitely do a meet or two this year (probably no later than November) and get some experience. Find out what works for you on meet day, whether or not you can drop weight and be more competitive in a lower weight class, or whether you need to eat more and get to the top of your weight class.

But I’m confused as to which federation I need to compete in. Does it NEED to be USAPL?

And why is it that my search right now of USAPL meets are only getting bench and deadlift meets? Lol

USAPL is drug tested so lots of people like it for that, except for gear users of course.
-Ive heard people complain about USAPL refs being too strict, especially on squat depth.
-The records for USAPL in the raw division for states like Florida are all reasonably beatable.
-I dont see many USAPL sanctioned meets in your region so you would have to travel.
-A lot of USAPL meets say Bench only, DL only, and then PL just click the form if you dont think it doesnt have full PL, but i havent really seen one yet that doesnt.
-You might want to look at Southern Powerlifting Federation, they have meets in texas and arkansas which might not be as far lol.

**EDIT: I think any federation is fine for you to compete in and practice up to the Arnold, but since USAPL does the raw and seems to be the stricter federation you might want to get familiar with their rules and atleast compete in one previous to the arnold. Message Storm THe Beach, he competed in the Arnold this year and last year i think

This year you had to lift at USAPL 2011 Raw Nationals to qualify. I’d expect the same thing if the USAPL is back next year. To qualify for Raw Nationals (in Texas this year) you need to establish a raw total in a USAPL meet. Here is a nationwide meet list:

http://www.usapowerlifting.com/calendar.php?showCat=

This isn’t always as up to date as the state federation websites, so I’d find the state(s) you are thinking about doing a meet in, and going to their websites directly. If you can’t find a USAPL meet that works, you can try USPA as they tend to have roughly the same judging standards.

I train with Al Caslow at Society of Strength in Olathe, KS. We are all doing a raw meet together in Blue Springs, MO in June I believe. It’s not up on PL watch yet.

Aw I just signed up for the Sunflower State Sports on July 14th in Topeka, KS. I wish I would have known about that this morning lol. Would have been awesome! Maybe I’ll just do both :slight_smile:

Yeah you could do both. I need to figure out the exact date. Do you usually train in Lawrence?

Yes I train at KU’s strength club. Our coach is Mike Lane, you might know him. I’m pretty sure him and Al know each other. He was in a sumo deadlift tutorial video on EliteFTS with Al.

The USAPL Nebraska state meet is April 28 in Lincoln. I know the state chair. You can PM me if you want contact information.

Awesome. I’ve seen that video. I just did my first meet last month. Big Iron in Omaha. It helped a lot having my team with me, so it’s good you have guys you train with and a coach. Our biggest team training is Sunday mornings send me a message if you ever want to stop in.

I would rather do the meet in Kansas in July that I have already signed up for, or the one mentioned in MO in June since these are both in the summer and easier to make it to. It’s hard to do something In April seeing how that’s when project due dates and finals are nearing. Thank you for the suggestion, though!
