Q&A With Coach Davies

First of all, thanks for the reply.
Currently I’m not doing any weight training, just playing and practicing basketball almost every day.
The last time I hitted the gym was three weeks ago, so I haven’t lost my strenght. My best lifts for the moment are Deadlift 275X3, Squat 205X3, Bench 145X3, power clean 135X2, power snatch 100X2. Vertical leap around 25" (Standing) and around 30" (running).
My current fitness level is acceptable since I play lots of basketball.
I am planning to get back into the gym a week after season finishes,
Thanks again.

I’m a bit confused with your posts. In the first post you mentioned you wanted to improve your levels of fitness and strength. In this post you mentioned you haven’t lifted in 3 weeks and your fitness is satisfactory. Please fill me in on your goals.

But this is where I step a bit out-of-bounds abit but I have to say if you want gains you need to train. You need to train, train hard and train right. I won’t come easy in-fact its a lot of tough work but if you want it bad enought you can do anything.

Let me know how I can help.

Coach D-

Nice, to hear see you on this forum. On a Q&A forum I’ve been extremely busy at work. I guess thats a good thing. Just to let you know I am doing well and that I am almost done w/ treatments (chemo) two more then I am done. One tommorow and one more next month and I will be done with treatments. I been very weak so I haven’t been working out.

Saving my energy for work. I am going to start working out again after August. I am doing a lot of cardio just no weight training (I feel too week.)

Hey, great to hear from you.

Good to hear your coming through treatments - I know you’ll get through this. You’re a great inspiration.

Just give me a call or an email whenever you like. You know if there’s anything I can do - just ask.

When I get into town, we have to go grab something to eat - maybe even improve upon that last Diner. LOL

Take care,

Coach D, first off i want to thank you, i started training renegade style for lacrosse almost 2 years ago. I just finished my second year at CW Post University and was named All American. I’ve used programs of yours that i’ve picked up along the way but as lacrosse is more of an east coast sport you’ve never had one specifically for it. I’ve read the book for football, and like i said i’ve read all of your archives and have picked up valuable stuff along the way. Any chance of a lacrosse program? i’d be willing to pay big $$ haha…this off season is HUGE as i NEED to repeat as all american, expectations are set reaaaal high now…thanks again coach.

Hi Coach, I’ve been reading many of your articles and love GPP. I was wondering if you made personalized programs for money(or free :P). I know CT does this, but I’d like to know about you…

Deuce…first thank you for the compliments, I’m honored to have helped. As far as Lacrosse - I’ve had a program for a longtime and you might say because of my very special “photographer” who plays the game.

BTW…my programs are priced quite reasonable and I even have a method of purchase in which part of your purchase goes towards a charity. Let me know how I can help.

I write an enormous amount of personal programs. Let me know how I can help.

But since others ask - I will mention the shameless plug of a promotion I have that involves a charitable donation made on your behalf when you purchase a program. Besides getting the program you want for an actual dollar savings, we can actually help those less fortunate.

Let me know if you are interested.

Coach, a lacrosse program?? Wow that is awesome, can you give me any small details before i purchase? I was just making a joke about paying $$, i love your stuff and as you said its def reasonably priced, just bought an x-vest from your site about a month ago, and love it…BTW the free thermal shirt is AWESOME…look forward to hearing a little bit about the lax program, thanks again coach

Coach Davies,
Regaardding the strongman training, i have a 220 pound bag that I use as a stone and I also use it for a bear hug hold for time and pressing. I also do a few set of farmers walk in the gym 2x a week. And I have about 200lbs of sand bags. Any ideas?

hmm…you’ve got one of the thermals. Yeah, that one is long sold out. The lacross program is a great program but honestly because of my respect for the game. I was actually speaking with a coach about the game a few days ago and talking about Jim Brown.

BTW if you purchase use the apparel promo and pick out 4 pieces at any price. Let me know how I can help or maybe I ought to get some skill coaching from you - lol…not a pretty sight. I’ll also be in your area soon - maybe we can get together and train sometime.

Yes, next time when you come through town again we should get some grub. You, Grant, and I should grab some Korean BBQ or some Japensee Sushi there some great resturants in Bergen County. My brother is living in Bergenfield now so I vist him every now and then. He also owns a BUBBLE TEA place in Bergenfield on Washington Ave. called Fusion TI, if you like bubble tea you should go grab one over there.

In Health always,

PS: We were joking around work I’ll
I’ll be the next Lance. When I
start working-out again.

Jim Brown, not many know how great of an athlete he truly was. Most only know of his exceptional football talent. Truth is, he was an even better lacrosse player. You’ll get me into better shape, i’ll show you some skills haha. I started counseling a lac camp this week, and once i get this pay check the lacrosse program is all me. I’d be honored if we ever got together when you were in the area. Let me know when u’ll be in town.

Isn’t the consensus that he was the one of the greatest?

Ok…you’re on about the skill thing and definately it would be great to meet up while I’m in the general area.

Coach Davies-

What is your take on children (ages 10-15) lifting weights?

Tokyoo - first that is a very broad age group and a lot of variances. However for children I believe in including resistance work as part of the wheel of conditioning.

I hope that helps and am happy to discuss if you like.

Coach,

Just wondering if you could describe in general terms what one should do to to compliment combat sports training. Should training for combat sports be very specific?I keep going back and forth between body weight stuff with lots of anaerobic work or trying to get strong and powerful with heavy weight training and modified olympic movements.
which part of the wheel is most important? I am talking about grappling and striking. Tips?

Coach Davies,
Let me just say that I have been interested in your training for years and have been really interested in trying it.

What would you do for a basketball player trying to get in the best shape out of all the other players for preseason conditioning? Last years preseason conditioning was extremely brutal. It included long distance running up to 3 miles, many 400s, 200s, 100s, 100 yard suicides, indian runs etc. What can I do to get in prime shape for basketball, and this brutal track work for basketball. Thanks for your help!

Coach Davies-

I’m in the middle of my rugby season and I’ve got a three week break coming up. I’d really like to step up my training during this time, focusing on sprint speed and overall conditioning.

Brief details, if that helps - I play in the backs, which means much more sprint/stop work, am 5’11’, 193lbs and am in mid-season form (whatever that means).

Any program of yours or any suggestions at all would be much appreciated.

Mike

Coach thanks for the reply regarding training programs. With regards to my daughter, I married into a family of skiers! I had never done any prior to marrying my wife, but I have learned over the last 11 years ( my inlaws have a place on the slopes in Snowmas that they have had for like 20 years). My wife wants to get my kids some training skiis for this winter since we have a hill in the backyard. Do they make a snowboard for little kids to learn on (and they can decide which they like)? And maybe a mini Indo board while we are at it!!
