Q & A, PW Style

Soy sauce makes me fart, but I do love it. Life is hard.

So does anal sex.

cool bananas, i had been wondering whether women should avoid soy (knew that men should). i had also been wondering whether soya sauce counted as soy in that respect.

thanks for all the responses about creatine!!

sounds like it is worth a try at some point and see how i find it. um… dosage… sounds like i should experiment with that, too. am sure i’ve seen some loading parameters somewhere… some controversy… probably should experiment… still, kinda feel that i should more regularly be hitting my protein goals before i start obsessing over that.

cal - i don’t reckon your ass looks anywhere near as bad as you think it looks. i think that that swimsuit isn’t so flattering for your shape but that is the swimsuits fault :-p are you really a pear?? i was seeing more of an hourglass…

think different people store fat in slightly different places. i’m too fat to know which area is going to be the hardest… but my upper arms annoy the hell out of me. fortunately… not as much as my pathetic legs…

If it wasn’t for the fact I’d spent 25 years lifting weights, I would be a pear. I have a tiny ribcage and little arms like a T-Rex. As a teen I had a 24 inch waist, 10 inch arms and my pant size was two sizes bigger than my top size.
Fortunately, I started weights early enough to make a significant difference to my frame.

Alexus- Did you just say YOU were FAT?!

Somewhat related to that topic is my question for this thread: how is it possible that Cal Jones is setting deadlift PRs while counting a can of tuna and several protein shakes + fish oil as her total caloric intake? I’m not questioning that she’s accurately recording her diet, because I completely believe she is. But this flies in the face of everything I’ve ever read about making progress in lifting. Cal isn’t what I’d call fat. The articles I’ve read state that if you want to make gains, you generally have to eat in excess and accept that if you don’t you wont make gains. So how is she making gains while eating in extreme deficit?

ironcross - that was right at the beginning of the diet (and largely because I had just got back from a trip and couldn’t be arsed to go shopping!) Currently, most days I’m having two shakes as meals and the third meal is protein (mostly chicken - the supermarket had an offer on chicken breasts and bacon so I’ve been eating a lot of both) with veggies (and sometimes a carb if I feel I need it). I’m probably downing close to a litre of milk (skimmed, admittedly) a day just in tea, so there’s some carbs in that and a few calories.

As far as the PR goes, it’s not an all time PR. I deadlifted a bit more than that a couple of years back but I’ve been dogged by injuries (25 years of lifting have taken their toll) so I’ve really only resumed deadlifting again recently. A lot of the progress can be attributed to muscle memory. Same with squats - my squat is poor because I have problematic hips so the lift will go up as my technique improves.

I heard that. I wish I had one of those teeny waists to go with the bubble butt. Even when my bf is lower (its never actually low) I’m still like 2 feet thick.

And for the record, I also have saddle bags and cellulite. Its only a little lump at the top of my hips and a slight ripple just below my glutes. SH claims he can’t see what I’m talking about, but I know its there and it drives me nuts. Gaining muscle and losing fat (surprise!) has helped with both issues though.

Cal, I don’t really have anything to add since all the ass building advice has been covered, but I really don’t think yours looks nearly as bad as you think. You’ve created a very nice hourglass silhouette.

It still looks like you’re in a deficit and making progress lifting (a weight that you haven’t lifted in several years is still impressive), although not as extreme as at the beginning of your journal. I’ve also seen friends who were dieting for competition continue to make gains a week before the show. What else do you think might be responsible?

Roids! (Joke). More like sheer bloody mindedness. I am pushing myself harder than I have done in a while. I also think I have a slow metabolism - I remember doing the V-Diet a couple of years ago and felt crappy on it. I don’t feel crappy on this. I am physically tired but I don’t feel weak or spaced out.

I am taking creatine in one of my shakes each day and I am also using nicotine gum as a stimulant (it also has an anti-estrogenic effect and having a very estrogenic body-type, I thought it would be helpful. And it is because I haven’t been tempted to binge despite the pretty rigid diet). So those two things may be helping.

mind over matter.
At least for me it is…

Your nicotine use is interesting, but I’m a little scared to try it personally as I already lack curve.

It is possible go make strength gains while on a deficit for a period of time but not indefinately.

ALSO BACK TO GENERAL THYROID INFO: Women should not eat raw vegetables from the cabbage family. It is my understanding that cooked is fine. They are thyroid suppressing “goitrogenic”

Yup, that’s quite correct, Hallowed. The compound that messes with thyroid is destroyed by cooking. I generally boil my broccoli but that’s because I don’t have a steamer.

Damn it, Ouro, I thought that might be the case. I’ve had cellulite since puberty hit. I noticed I have the beginnings of upper abs in the mirror this evening - it looks as though I will have abs and a fat arse at the same time.

It’s funny - I’ve seen a lot of these amazing physique transformations around the web (including some ladies on here) and pretty much all of them held fat around the middle or all over. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a pear-shaped woman transform into anything other than a slightly smaller pear-shaped woman. If anyone can prove me wrong, then please provide a link - I could do with the inspiration.[/quote]

My friend Tara. You can’t quite see it here, but she holds all her fat in her hips. She has abs in the before pic, and they get shredded before her ass leans out.

How lean does she have to get before she loses it on her hips?

That’s an awesome picture. She looks great.

Lean enough that she has to worry about getting striations in her shoulders. But I’ve always thought she had a cute gorgeous bubble butt, and she does pretty well in figure. She’s had to work hard to balance her lower body with her upper, she definitely has nice strong legs and ass but that isn’t perfectly balanced for figure. The first pic is from 07, before she started lifting seriously. The second pic is from a show in 08 or 09.

She has a fantastic arse in the second picture. Would she care to share how she got it into that shape? I’d be really grateful if you could find out and post or PM the details.

does diet seriously make a difference in strength gains at the PW level? I eat really random shit…

typical day is like -

breakfast
rittersport chocolate bar or croissant

lunch
1/2 rotisserie chicken or currywurst mit pommes (sausage and fries…mmmm) or spaghetti

assorted daily snacks:
4-5 bananas
3-4 tomatos
1 avocado
1-2 potatoes
a ball of mozzarella cheese or someother cheese

drinks
apfelschorle (apple juice/mineral water mix, addicting as fuck)
pot of coffee

dinner
magnum ice cream bar or protein drink

lol. I suck at cooking.

how much of that leaned out ass is due to spray tanning? hah. this is a really cool demonstration PMPM of what you can do with your body when you train it, srsly, thanks for the inspiration.
