Oh and that video of Dimas as a kid is amazing. About 60kg on the bar and he does hundreds and hundreds of reps. He’s still going! Unreal…
1990+? Reza Zedeh, Botev, Weller, Chemerkin, Khakiashvilis, Kolecki, maybe Yotov, maybe Mutlu and a few of the 170kg+ snatchers in the 76kg and 77kg categories.
I think the classes were changed the first time to have a slate of new records lifted under a tighter testing program, the second time to make room for the bitches.
Three golds and a bronze yes, with lifts no better than 180kg and 215kg (never combined either), above average lifts a generation prior. Again, right place, right time.
Pocket Herc will probably remain the only person to have lifted three and one-sixth times bodyweight for many years to come.

Well who out of modern (1990+) olympic lifters would have records even in the old weight classes (why did they change them anyway?) Pirros Dimas is amazing. You say he didn’t have the best technique? Well for me that makes him even more amazing, 3 golds and a bronze despite that.
Naim S?leymano?lu is my favourite lifter. I definately think Bulgaria has produced the best male lifters especially in terms of its size as a country, Naim being probably the best (even though he lifted for Turkey). He should have won four golds but there was a boycott in one of them I think? 1984 games Soviet boycott.
Ha thats what I thought the first time I saw that, then I realized it was looped…oh well

Well, both Chakarov and Khakiachvili are on that same tape, as well as Nerlinger powercleaning 200kg like a toy, and Weller snatching in increments of 50, 100, 150, 160, 170, 180, and lastly 190kg in the time of about ten minutes, but out of these only Chakarov’s legendary no-no-no squat is ever mentioned (I assume we are talking about the 1993 World Champs training hall tape).
Also, Dimas was split-jerking at that time due to an injury.

I can’t believe this is turning into a thread saying a 3 time gold medalist isn’t all that. One reason why the Dimas thread is so popular is that there aren’t many training vids for OL floating around the internet. If other lifter’s training vids circulated the same way, we would be in awe of them as well.
So, if you have some, share with us! hahahahah

I have seen the Chakarov workout clip with the no no no squats, but I haven’t seen the entire tape. I didn’t want to order a vhs tape and ironmind didn’t have it on dvd.
“There is an article in one of the Ironmind books that talks about the different starting positions for a clean/snatch for a lifter with a short torso and with a long torso. Pretty good read.
Actually, I have it right here.
September 2005, Volume 13, number 2. P.89”
I just wanted to say that it is the “Milo” book.
I hope I don’t upset anyone (mods) but there are some great clips on chidlovski.net.
Naim’s 190kg C+j @60kg still amazes me; his body almost buckles as he stands with it.
Regards
Chris

Whats the story behind the no no no squat?
no no no:
No belt, No wraps, No spotters
Like the guy in the video said, how many guys can clean and jerk 375 lbs then drop the bar to a front squat and “casually” walk no handed to rack the weight at a body weight of 180lbs. Can you imagine him doing that in a Bally’s?lol

ahahahahaha
That was inspiring!
I just got a call from a local Oly Club coach.
I START PRACTICE this saturday.
I am so psyched!
every time I see this, all I want to do is speed-strength type work… damnit that video is awesome.
now, with my oldschool comment, how many people split jerk today in competition now vs. 40 years ago?
and in my mind, it sounded funny.
OLD SCHOOL!

kenmen is correct but personally I think it shouyld mean:
No, belt, no wraps, no suit.
Simply because the no spotters thing is irrelevant with rubber bumper plates and a platform. If you get stuck with the weight in a back quat you simply let the bar drop behind to the ground. With a little practice it’s a lot easier then it may sound.
BTW I purchased the ironmind#1297 DVD (It is available in DVD format) the Dimas clip came from and # 1353 “Creating champions” I’ve watched them both over and over again. Very informative inspiring!
those colors look awesome. Yes i am biased and it should be understandable.
and anyone, regardless of sport, wins 3 gold medals in consecutive olympics, or medals in 4 consecutive olympics, They are a legend. Suprisingly you have a handful like that in modern olympic lifting and it still does not take away from their accomplishments.
I also value the feets of strength of the average height lifters (i believe the average male population height to be 5’9") then the little guys 5’ tall or the big buys weighing 300lbs. not saying that they don’t deserve props, it’s just that as an average height sized man i relate to it alot better in terms of body mechanics (how much you have to move the weight) and power to weight ratio.

How does that happen? Surely he either made the lift or he didn’t. ![]()
The sequence is as follows:
1.power clean - front squat - 2 jerks
-
power clean - front squat - 2 jerks
-
power clean (miss) -hang clean - front squat 2 jerks.
TNT
He doesn’t miss, he had the first power clean. He just decided do a hang clean after he’d racked it. I know it doesn’t fit the sequence but a good weightlifter will train intuitively, rather than stick to an exact plan.
Agree. That was no miss. He had the bar racked easy.

The split jerk is still very common. Khaki power jerked, and I think a few Chinese lifters power jerk (I’ve seen them squat jerk - actually go down into a full squat as opposed to a quarter squat like Khaki does) but the split jerk is very much alive. Now, the split clean and split snatch pretty much died in the 1960s.
I’m probably the few dinosaurs left who split cleans due to lack of flexibility and the lack of patience to develop more flexibility. I think it’s a very solid position and you can get into a split faster than you can get into a squat, or so I’ve read. Funny, it’s not something I tried to develop. It’s just that whenever I tried to get down into a squat, my body just naturally wanted to split. I figured, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. However, for snatching I prefer to squat. Go figure.
i would think it would be a lot more difficult to come up from a split snatch rather then a split clean. laters pk
Holy mackeral! His video library has grown quite a bit since I last visited. You all can check out Genchev on the Bulgarian compilation clip becoming the all-time heaviest dude ever to lift triple bodyweight overhead. Amazing clips.
The lift was a 202.5kg C&J as a 67.5kg lifter for those don’t know.
