Punching Power w/out Focus on Technique?

hey lately I’ve been interested in developing my punching power as a secondary goal, but I want to do it without sacrificing my weight lifting in the process. My first and foremost goal is just lifting weights and getting bigger and stronger. At the same time though I want to be able to hit like a mack truck. I already know the basics, since I did boxing consistently for a year, so I know everything about turning the hips, pivoting, stance etc.

So does anyone know how I can build punching power aside just from weight lifting (which is helping me alot),and be able to develop a strong and explosive punch. I’ve heard sledgehammer swings are great, but what sort of punching drills on the heavy bag would you guys recommend?? I’d appreciate any ideas as well as knowing how often I should do those activities to improve power.

increase power on rotational movements

Become heavier?

Increase hip mobility. Most likely, yours sucks. No offense. Or if you want a fancy answer: That thing where you swing a large medicine-ball-sized ball that’s attached to a rope, and bang it against a wall swinging from side to side… - YouTube (sorry no audio on this)

Yay!

Another punching power thread!!

Sorry for the sarcasm OP, there’s been a stack of these, and there’s been a variety of opinions- on whether it’s even possible, how effective it could possibly be, as well as various proposed methods.
I think rather than stir up all the different arguments again you be best off to check out the other threads, either use the search function, or I imagine it would be on the first page or two, I’m pretty sure it was obviously named.

Good luck!

Sprints can possibly work, esp. if you never did them beforehand and lack explosiveness.
Plus, they’re very affordable.

I don’t really want to get a discussion going on whether or not punching power is genetic, which is what all the other punching power threads seem to be about. All I want to know is how can a non-boxer build up his punching power in the decent range. I’m not expecting to build a knockout punch or anything since I don’t know shit about timing and all that, but I still want to build a stronger punch. Hell just give me a list in point form of all the tried and true exercises that have helped you guys in the past, I’ll research up those methods myself.

And Therizza what doyou mean “increase power on rotational movements?” What rotational movements are you talking about??

Exercises aren’t going to give you a stronger punch- Good technique combined with heavy bag training and other boxing methods will.

Would you come on here and say, “Listen, I don’t want to learn how to swing a golf club, but I want to drive the ball 400 yards. What exercises will help?”

No, cause you’d sound like an ass.

Learning how to punch correctly is your only recourse, combined with lots of boxing work.

brass knuckles, the stuff Margarito used.

If you think you know everything about the basics after training for a year then you are either a natural or you are deluded.

You want to hit harder, focus on technique and hit the heavy bag.

C’mon guys, cut him some slack.
It’s OK to ask. And I’ve known quite a few guys who’d have done well/did do well in forgetting about technique and concentrating a bit more on explosive exercises (plyos, sprints, car pushing etc) for some weeks.

p.s. Cockney, I refrained from writing the exact thing about experience and technique in my former post.

A year? Really? Whoa, now I see you know everything about boxing. Just as anyone who did some form of resistance exercise for a year consistently could write articles here at TNation, since he… knows everything about getting stronger.

Ok, I’ll stop the whining at once. Just had to say that.

Well, most of things here are true, of course. Plyos work, getting heavier is always a good idea if you just want to hit harder, working that serratus of yours will definately sharpen up those punches… but it’s all pretty much in vain unless you focus on technique and throw a lot of punches.

Sorry dude, but that’s the truth, wheter you like it or not.

pinwheel curls.

thanks for all the help!

lol

power training, with punch like motions, fast bench press is good for the tricep part of the punch,
but alot of a punch comes from the legs, hips, core muscles, and other muscles look up kienetic linking in martial arts then strengthen all those muscles and more importantly improve explosive power,
and there you have it, a heavey bag to batter would be nice also .

What’s with all these old threads being resurrected damnit???

I guess people are still confused about punching power. New threads asking the same redundant stuff is more annoying.

I guess my theory about most humans being stupid and never learn is right, this thread just confirms it.
