The money IS good. Starting pay for an English teacher with no experience is almost never less than US $3000 a month. That’s for a pretty easy job with 2 weeks of vacation a year and a 1 year completion bonus of another $1500 to $2000.
However, again, this is Japan. That amount of money in the US would go a looooong way for a single guy. Problem is, EVERYTHING here is expensive. The prices that Japanese people pay for things without a thought still just floor me even after having lived here over 10 years. I don’t have time to get into it here, but maybe I could start another thread if anyone is interested.
A caveat, any American who has not actually LIVED in another country who is contemplating doing so had better understand one thing before deciding to just pack up and leave. America is the best place to live in the world. There is more of EVERYTHING and ALL of it is cheaper than you can get for the same thing anywhere else, if you are lucky enough to be able to find it. The amount of choice Americans have, when viewed through a foreign lens, is just staggering. Those who have never left the country for an extended period of time really cannot understand just how profoundly well off the average American is, at any income level. I’d move back to the states in a heartbeat if I didn’t love what I was doing here so much.

However, like all things Japanese, what you think you see is not necessarily what you get.
Women control the finances because that is their household role. The glue that really comprises this bond is the fact that both Western men and Japanese women appreciate one another. I do disagree with one small point tho. Japanese moms are not the hottest. Mormon moms are the hottest. Like Japanese moms, Mormon moms take really good care of themselves. They exercise and eat right in addition to dressing really well. Then you have more variety to choose from; blonds, brunettes, redheads, tall, short etc.
