Protocol for Volume Training

Hey CT,
Just a final question on using volume training, what is a good protocol to follow for working sets?
Should I stay away from failure on all sets?
Or
Only hit failure on the last set?
Or
Should I hit failure on all sets?

Is it different when using isolation exercises vs compound exercises? What is a good rule of thumb, if applicable for isolation and compound movement?
